I like Herring's Landmark recordings, and he is a dependable sideman. He is not an innovator in any sense, but is very capable and uppretentious, and I enjoy his work.

Lon, by marginal I didn't mean insignificant, it was just my finance/econ double major-speak coming through. The original prices for the Mosaic Vee Jay's were of course, reasonable. Some of the later resale prices I've seen are staggering. Glad you got them back then, and glad you're happy with them! I'm sure they're very nice.

There's also a Best Of CD being released at the same time Best of what? Do you mean a smaller, one disc version of the 3 discs in this set? Or something else? I hear that Concord is going to lease some of the material and release a collection called 'Miles Davis Bootlegged for Lovers'. One 35 minute CD, edited versions. I would love that, something like live stuff from the 'Caravanserai' and 'Borbeletta' eras. To me, Leon Thomas didn't really fit well with Santana, so 'Lotus' always felt like it could have been more, great as it was. Leon Patillo always seemed like the far superior fit to me.

But at what marginal cost difference? You're not alone! I enjoyed them too! Stuck with their reissues from VeeJay. Fine sound, alternate takes. That was good enough here. Also enjoyed their CD reissues of rare items like The Cool Gabriels, Rocky Boyd, Anthony Ortega, Jomar Dragon and others... I also like the Blue Moon Vee Jay's. Those are what I have as my Vee Jay core.

Rc'd the 2 CD's in good order from Dusty Groove, ordered the DVD from Amazon.

The 'Believer' I got from them was from the fan club, but silver-backed. Not sure if 'The Believer' and the other two ever actually came out on CD otherwise. I've never seen them.

Amazon also has downloads for only $2.97 per album (benefit of only 3 cuts @ $.99 each), but I'm an older guy, and like my CD's.

I caught a break - Dusty Groove just got both CD's back in stock this evening! I ordered both. Thanks everyone.

I love love love Billy Harper's music, have for almost 40 years. It has a spiritual impact on me more than anyone else's. I have finally decided to take the leap and complete my collection of his recordings. I was missing three CD's and the Live in Poland DVD. I was able to get 'The Believer' from Da Bastads (Dusty Groove) for $16.99 and shipping (about $21 total when all was said and done). I can get the DVD for $17.98 on Amazon. The remaining two CD's, 'Love on The Sudan' and 'Trying to Make Heaven My Home', are available from a seller on ebay for $24.99 + $4.00 shipping (so $28.99 total) each. Dusty Groove lists both, but is out of stock on them, and I have no confidence on them coming back in. Does anyone know a better source than ebay for the two CD's (or a better i.e. cheaper source for the DVD for that matter)? I want to try to get all of this now before it disappears. Thanks for your help.

I haven't sold anything on ebay in over two years, but only had a few of those experiences out of probably 1000+ sales over a 10 year period. Ebay seems to police their community pretty well in that particular regard (but not in other regards).

With you on the Farrell and Weston. That's my favorite Farrell album by a long stretch. Quite a rhythm section (Chick Corea, Buster Williams, Elvin Jones, Airto).

Great documentary. I was thrilled when I got the package for $25 when it came out, let alone $5.

The group with Watson and Wynton Marsalis was great. 'Album of the Year' and the Live at Bubba's stuff (available on many different budget labels by many different names) stand out in my mind. Also, 'Gypsy Folk Tales', Watson's debut, is great, but hard to find. Never really quite the same after Watson left to my ears (his writing really stood out), though they could still bring it live and had a dazzling array of young talent pass through (Blanchard and Harrison, Wallace Roney, Philip Harper, Brian Lynch, Jean Toussaint, Branford Marsalis, Benny Green, Steve Davis, Javon Jackson, etc etc etc).

Those are both at once "what you'd expect" & "better than you might think". Are they more "Mwandishi" or more "Headhunters" and after? Love the pre-Headhunters stuff, and some of the Eddie Henderson and Julian Priester spinoffs of that sound.
