In 1975, the great Rory Gallagher was touring the US as the opening act for Bachman-Turner Overdrive. I didn't see the show, but I've seen Rory's Montreux Festival performance from 1975 on DVD. How those hacks from BTO followed that, I'll never know. Gallagher's Irish Tour '74 DVD (and CD) is also not to be missed. What a monster musician he was, one of THE great guitar players, from such an early age (what was he, 20 when the first Taste albums came out?). Hard to believe he passed so young. Really good news. The India Navigation's are fine fine sets (as are the Contemporary's from the same period). Also, the Cecil McBee's from that period are prime C.Freeman. @Niko - no, don't think so from where I sit. Von has gotten a lot of attention in recent years, and Chico seems largely forgotten after a couple decades of disappointing efforts. Never have understood what happened to him, as he started so majestically. Von and Chico are very different players, of course, and the times seem to have swung jazz tastes back towards Von to a degree. Von has always been lost on my ears, especially the later stuff, but YMMV.

There's a splendid 20 odd minute track on the 2nd disc of the Eric Clapton 'Crossroads 2' box with Santana joining Clapton's band - a very exciting perfornce. Recorded in Providence, Rhode Island in 1975. I remember a concert in Cincinnati in 1969 (I wasn't at it, was only 14-15 years old) where Santana was the opening act for Arlo Guthrie! Bet the Woody Guthrie-ite folkies never knew what hit them!

Bill, do you consider these recordings more essential than the later Atlantic recordings?

Any thoughts/info on Noah Howard at Judson Hall? Has never been on CD as far as I know, and that's the ESP I'd really like to see get reissued.

Count me as another huge Caravanserai fan. Desert Island Disc for me. The release point in "Every Step of the Way" may be the most exciting moment in the history of recorded music. Caravanserai, while not up to the sales levels of Abraxas, nonetheless sold very well, was a top 10 album if I remember correctly. Lotus is in print as a budget release, will run you under $15 for the 2CD set, and is well worth it. I remember shelling out semi-major $ for it as an import 3 LP set in the 70's, as it was never released domestically until the CD era.

Seems like he intentionally hasn't tried to, for whatever reason. Clifton Anderson, Mark Soskin, and Bobby Broom aren't it, obviously.
