  1. Gotcha. Makes sense. Were there college radio stations playing it in those towns, or was it word of mouth and the fledgling rock press? I shudder to think what someone like Jon Landau would have done in a review of that one.
  2. As a record retailer at the time, I shoved hundreds of 'em into bags. It was huge in any store I was working. Probably did well in the large urban markets that would have had "underground" radio stations like Chicago, where I believe you were. Probably never got heard in the hinterlands which were still exclusively AM Top 40 stations. I was even in a city that had a good underground station (Cincinnati, WEBN), and I don't remember hearing it, though I was 13 years old and would not have liked or understood it if I had heard it. Not sure how much I actually like or understand it even now, but I do admire it.
  3. This is wide-ranging forum for jazz fans, many of whom have wide-ranging tastes. Grateful Dead, prog rock, Van Morrison, Heart Attack, Flipper, Black Flag, Sonic Youth - and a whole load more. Doesn't mean you have to express your distaste every time someone you don't dig gets some O cyber time. But the beauty of an open forum is that you have the freedom to express your distastes! I admire Costello for turning five good years of music ('77-'82) into a 30+ year career and a marriage to the lovely and talented Diana Krall.
  4. Correct, it did not make the Billboard Top 200 album charts at all. 'Moondance' went to #22. Morrison has only ever had one top 20 album, "St. Dominic's Preview", which made #15.
  5. Greil Marcus ROCKS. I love the 'Mystery Train' book.
  6. Agreed on the sound quality. Also, Mal Waldron was stuck playing the most out of tune piano in the history of recorded music. The Dolphy Prestige CD box is the way to go on all of this stuff if you like Dolphy, far more economical than any other configuration and nice packaging. And if you're not sold on Dolphy, the Five Spot stuff isn't anywhere near the place to start (I'd start with his recordings with Mingus and with 'Last Date').
  7. Not 'to your taste?' PM sent on the Handy
  8. Not stupid at all, thank you for asking. 20-bit K2 remastering was used by Fantasy on a select set of their OJC titles and these editions were released in the early 2000's before Fantasy sold their operations lock, stalk, and barrell to the Evil Concord Empire, who are much more concerned about hawking the latest lame James Taylor and Paul McCartney titles than about the availability and well-being of some classic, beautiful 45-50 year old Walt Dickerson titles. Anyways these remasters, the K2's, are widely renowned for their sound quaility, and most of the board members who have much better stereo systems than I do seem to find them far superior to the latter RVG and Keepnews editions, and even I on my little portable disk player at work and my low end Sennheiser headphones find them to sound fantastic. They are all out of print at this point.
  9. Amazon Marketplace, where one of their big guys (Caiman or ImportCD's) will generally have a good price.
  10. We live in a world of carnivals and clowns And buildings to the sky that make us want to fly
  11. Up with edits, almost 100 gone since posted 2/15! Thanks to all!
  12. I don't know this recording, but it looks like the same band as on the Pablo, Live at the Northsea Jazz Festival, which is quite good. It's a good, not great, set. Worth having.
  13. 'Juju' is my favorite. Love 'Night Dreamer' and 'Infant Eyes' also.
  14. I like it. Much stronger than 'Motto Grosso Feio' to my ears. I always thought that it, 'Motto' and 'Supernova' would make a nice 2CD set.
  15. OOPS !! sorry about that ps I'm actually a Klingon But you do have these great attributes going for you: 1 - You aren't arrogant. 2 - You take a joke very well. 3 - You like Frank Strozier and Booker Little. I hope you'll stay around and get involved in the board discussions. Welcome to our strange neighborhood.
  16. They're also coming out with the second Chuck Berry box (1960-1966), which is of even more interest to me! I'll grab them both (and the Motown 11B) as long as I'm still employed!
  17. I picked up the Curtis Fuller complete Savoy set, and thought it was outstanding in every aspect.
  18. PM sent on the Barron and Hazeltine CD's.
  19. because AAJ is big business, doing promotion, reviews etc - the board there is just a small and not that important part of it? I remember when I interviewed Patrick Landolt, founder/owner/head of Intakt Records, he mentioned AAJ as one of the sites that do matter - contrary to old-fashioned stiff rags such as Downbeat. AAJ management contacted me recently to politely kick me off their classifieds page. They said I was the last remaining "professional" seller there! I didn't argue with them, did mention that I'm just a normal guy with an oversized jazz CD appetite. If this was my profession, my family and I would starve!

  21. Noticed a bunch of Johnny Cash Columbia/Legacy titles in the "just added" section on yourmusic.com this morning, so hopefully that indicates that some sort of agreement has been reached between the companies.
  22. On the other had, I listen at work with my refurbished old Philips portable CD player and my $30 Sennheiser HD415 open air headphones (which I'll take over any other company's $100 headphones). The RVG's sound good to me, too.
  23. Even without the interview, they still wouldn't fit on one CD. 94 minutes of music. The collector in me would want to see a specially priced two CD set with great notes and photos, bonus cuts, etc. but I'm happy to get two straight reissues after all these years and will snatch them up immediately upon release.

    Rare Blue Notes

Don't even think of blaming Cuscuna or Blue Note for this. They went back to "LP order" after a few people complained about the shuffled order of the CDs. I think it was stupid and so does Michael, but Blue Note capitulated to a few vocal complainers. It was a small number of complaints, but it was enough that they listened. There's a thread around here somewhere where we debated it. A few of the more vocal complainers contributed their thoughts to that thread. I think that the issue here wasn't so much the order of the tracks so much as the fact that they excluded tracks that had been released when there was plenty of room on the RVGs to include them. I think that there is some logic to retaining the original LP orderings (after all a concious decision was made at the time to release them in this form) but not to exclude related tracks where they have been released before. Not that I think any of us are really in a position to "blame" Cuscuna for anything. Exactly. I think there's 30-40 minutes of great material MIA on the Sermon/Houseparty RVG's which are on the original CD's. The Mobley's included everything from the relevant sessions on both the original CD's and the RVG's.
  25. This is really an outtakes collection. Start with the twofer of "The Sound of '65/There's a Bond Between Us' reissued on BGO. That's the classic stuff and the logical starting point. 'Solid Bond' is supplementary for the already-converted.
