1 - Agreed on the Priester, amazing. 2 - To me, 'Timeless' is Abercrombie's masterpiece by a longshot. 3 - Chewy wants to know which of these Hank played on.

"The Coaster" off of Grachan Moncur III's great 'Evolution' album - with Lee Morgan, Jackie McLean, Bobby Hutcherson, Bob Cranshaw, and Tony Williams. Recorded 11/21/63, the day before JFK got shot. Talk about timeless music that hasn't aged!

I just discovered Standards In Silhouette a few months back myself. I'm in no way a Kenton fan, but this one actually moved me, something that KentonMusic rarely does. Otherwise, I've always been partial to Adventures In Jazz. And of course, the Bob Graettinger pieces, but that's a thing unto itself, really. Kenton's West Side Story album is awesome. A lot of the more adventurous 50's stuff on Capitol is pretty tremendous. Even a lot of the late 40's stuff is pretty cool, really enjoy hearing Anita O'Day and June Christy with him. I've also been very late to the game on Kenton, just really got into him last year. Some good early 70's concert recordings by him floating around also.

Up with edits. 42 gone, 15 more on hold.

Floored this morning by Anat Cohen's "Poetica" CD. Truly beautiful Israeli clarinet player, with Jason Lindner on piano.
-
The Roach session has some serious audio issues, very poorly recorded. The Blakey is a short album with a long ballad medley by players who had not yet matured very much.

It looks like this CD (Hard Bop Academy) is kind of hard to find. Charly also released the Blakey session backed with a Max Roach session (presumably the same one) on a CD called The Hard Drive (different from the Bethlehem CD), which is also OOP but a little cheaper used. Much as I like both Blakey (I have more CD's by him than by anyone else) and Roach, both of those sessions are dogs, relative to their other work of the period.

Was impressed again yesterday listening to a West Coast pianist named Theo Saunders, this time on a John Burgess CD which also benefitted from the contributions of the great bassist Henry Franklin. I remember being pretty blown away whey I heard Saunders' own CD a few years ago. Utter mastery and imagination, and nothing to make him particulary inaccessable for a listener. What do people know about Saunders, anyone else a fan like me, and why isn't he better known? (is it just geography, that he's not in the 212 area code?). Thx.

Actually, Live at the Lighthouse has Steve Grossman, not George Coleman. Correct, of course. I was typing in a hurry at work.
-
Don Cherry - Complete Communion (with Gato Barbieri) Elvin Jones - Coalition (with Frank Foster and George Coleman, technically a quintet due to an added percussionist) Elvin Jones - Live at the Lighthouse (with Dave Liebman and George Coleman; Gene Perla is geat on this)

"Masterpiece" is also spectacular. This is the one GWJR CD to own, for "Masterpiece" and "Trouble Man", about 30 minutes running time just on those two tracks.

The Love - Forever Changes CD belongs in every rock CD collection. Recorded in 1967, it was one of the best albums of that year (along with Tim Buckley's masterpiece 'Goodbye and Hello' and the Rascals' amazing 'Groovin' LP), head and shoulders above Sgt. Pepper's on the same musical playing field.

Chuck, you have expressed my exact viewpoint. Philly Joe Jones and Art Blakey are both drummers that emotionally move me in a way that Max Roach does not. I never saw Philly Joe, but saw Roach and Blakey a couple of times each, and I understand and agree with what is being said here. And their projected stage personalities also showed the same differentiations. Blakey was very warm and engaging, wonderful stories and such from the bandstand. Roach said little, letting the music speak. Blakey was extroverted in his presence and his playing, Roach was introspective in more ways. Blakey also seemed more and more to be into developing and leading younger and younger musicians later in his career, where Roach seemed to feel comfortable sticking for years with the same core of seasoned pros (C. Bridgewater and the two great Philly guys, Odean Pope and Tyrone Brown).

Thank you for the warning. Sorry this one worked out so poorly for you.

I've also gone on Sonny Simmons jags for a stretch in the past, but I must be missing something for these sessions to do that. I know Simmons is in there, but he's pretty much invisible to me (as are Jordan and Shaw).

Way back when his writing mattered, Christgau talked about how the music we were drawn to was that which reflected what we recognized as the rhythm of life. I'll try to find the exact quote at home, somewhere is his book of 70's Record Reviews.

Also can't think of any bad Billy Harper. Saw that group (Cecil Bridgewater and Reggie Workman completed the quartet) at Keystone Korner in 1977 - spectacular. Workman was really amazing that night.
