And Fantasy, after miraculously releasing all those OJC's, was starting to do some very nice multi-disc sets with the catalogs just before the sold out to Concord. The Miles Quartet box, the three Trane boxes, the Evans VV set, the Monk/Trane 2 disc set, Red Garland, Sonny Stitt, etc. And the earlier Fantasy boxes of Miles, Trane, Sonny Rollins, Monk, Wes Montgomery, Bill Evans, Eric Dolphy, etc. were highlights of the early CD era.

The best you can hope for from stinkin' Concord is a 34-minute 'Jack Walrath Plays For Lovers' CD with cheesy cover art. They don't care about listeners like us, terrible that they control the catalogs they do as they have no respect for the music.

Monk’s best (or your favorite) rhythm sections, and especially drummers?
felser replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Artists
Count me in for Ore and Dunlap. That was the first Monk I ever heard, on Two Hours With Thelonious (a 2LP repackaging of the Riverside France and Italy recordings, picked up for like $.57 from a J.M. Fields cutout bin in the early 70's). -

Notifications and Messages buttons not working in Firefox
felser replied to felser's topic in Forums Discussion
Update: The buttons are being blocked by McAfee WebAdvisor, which was updated on May 8. When I turn that off, the buttons work, when I turn it back on, they don't. I have been able to fix the problem by deselecting the "access your data for all websites" option on WebAdvisor. -

They have stopped working for me in Firefox in the past week or so, no response when I click on them. They still work fine for me in Chrome. Is anyone aware of settings which can fix this for me? -

What rock music are you listening to? Non-Jazz, Non-Classical.

You'll have to explain the secret to me some time. I lost heart with 'One World', and never regained it. 'Bless The Weather', 'Solid Air', and 'Inside Out' was a staggering run of albums in the early 70's, and I love 'Live at Leeds', also enjoy the early folkie albums and 'Sunday's Child'. -

Grant Green: under-estimated as Jazz artist, and Blue Note to blame?
felser replied to Milestones's topic in Artists
Wonderful guitar player, but at that time he was not a big name on the level of Montgomery or McLaughlin (or even Kenny Burrell or Green or George Benson for that matter). I agree with Guy's statement. -

A lot of wonderful records on BN. Idle Moments is clearly one of the best of them, and quite celebrated. The length (an in-studio error if you read and believe the liner notes) and majesty of the title cut, the uniform strength of the other material, and the magnificent musicianship across the board make it stand out even in such stellar company. It's special, not a weak or even mediocre moment. And great cover art to complete the package. It may be a typical classic period BN album, but when done right, that's an amazing pedigree. -

No argument from me on that. -

That's hindsight. Tyner had to still drive a cab to make ends meet, even while he was making those classic BN albums. The sales figures on the initial runs of some of the BN records would startle you on how low they were. My understanding is that Tina Brooks' classic 'True Blue' sold less than 1,000 copies on initial release, and that's why his other three albums stayed in the can for three decades. Thank Michael Cuscuna for the insight we have into the BN catalog and the exposure for some of the artists there. Agreed. the only ones that don't click for me are Feelin' The Spirit and Way Out West, and that's due to my (musical taste) aversion to the source material. I even like the 70's albums on BN quite a bit, and play the heavily arranged ones frequently. -

I'm with Dana on this one. IIRC, for example. those challenging early Andrew Hill records didn't sell at all. As for Green's output, the albums with Larry Young are not your typical "organ dates" - they were plenty challenging for the era. And 'Idle Moments', with Henderson/Hutcherson/Pearson, is widely considered a masterpiece. They released him in trio format, in quartet with piano, etc. Green's bad career move (in addition to being a heroin addict) was leaving BN for Verve, and he rectified that later on with his end of the decade return to BN. -

RIP, I fondly remember his work with Paul Butterfield, including the Woodstock appearance.

Where do you put your Selects and other CD's? -
Was reissued on CD in 2013 in Japan for about five minutes, as usual for those Japanese reissues.
