I own the Monk, Rollins, and Baez/Dylan books, but have not read any of them yet, as my retirement years are not proving to yield nearly as much discretionary time as I had anticipated (but life is good, filled with meaningful endeavors including raising our grandson, helping my 90 year old mother, working in domestic violence ministry, and more). The Berry and Mitchell are certainly of interest to me, but so many books, so little time...

Very talented musician in the space between jazz and R&B. Some nice albums from the period you mentioned, including one on Strata-East. Music Director/Bandleader with Nina Simone for a spell ca. 1969. Co-wrote "To Be Young, Gifted, and Black" with Simone, and wrote a score named 'To Be Young, Gifted, and Broke'. Passed at 58, much too young.

I hope Amazon or somebody eventually offers a download of that track. I'd pay my $1.29 or whatever to hear it. Are there any huge differences (such as much longer running length) on any of the new alternate takes in the box.

Discogs shows them, but I don't remember them. Of course, that may just mean that Third Street Jazz didn't carry them, or that I overlooked them with the flood of great albums I still wanted to acqure - I was only 20, in college, and had limited financial means.

Concord, and Concord. Though surprised that Fantasy never got it onto an OJC (they didn't miss many of the Prestige/Milestone/Riverside/Contemporary titles).

I love Nate Morgan, same format concerns. Not buying vinyl...

Agreed. I don't get all that much out of Black Market or the Jaco era, but this stuff up through Tale Spinnin' is great. I've had this box for many years. The sound quality is fabulous (all the latest remasters and bonus cuts up to that time), and the packaging is nice though not extravagent.

Same here on all counts, I think. I might have 'Message From The Tribe' filed under Harrison or Ranelin, have to check. I love the Marcus Belgrave album on the Tribe label. When I was in college in the mid-70's, a guy dropped a bunch of Tribe albums at Houston Hall Records on campus (where I hung out for hours every week) for them to sell on consignment. He never showed up to take them back, so the store sold them to me for like $1 each. If I had held onto those into the internet age, I'd be a rich man today!
