Are there any box bargains currently available?
felser replied to GA Russell's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Happens a fair amount for pop/rock/soul CD's on ebay, but usually disguises a selection of junk. In this instance, the prices he is asking for the Mosaic CD's in that form is, to me, way high, about $15/disc for sets without box or book. Looks like the couple bargains you mentioned were outliers. -
And that never ever happens on this board.....squirrel!

BFT 232 1 – fascinating stuff music, likely of very recent (last 10 years) vintage? I like the atmospherics (is that a word?) of the lyrics/vocal, though I am probably too old and culturally removed to grab onto the specifics. I’m sure my daughter would go for them. Worth a relisten in that regard. 2- Jones/Lewis? Good trumpet. 3 – Good stuff. Surely this is one of the “gimme’s” but I’m not able to ID yet (it should come to me). I’m sure I have it on the shelves. 4 – Exact same comments as on #3. Son of “Sidewinder”. It will come to me. 5 – Not my thing, much ado about nothing to me. I’m sure it seemed better live. 6 – Classic tenor player. I like that Lou Donaldson conga drum effect. Lockjaw on Prestige? Another “gimme”? Bet I have it. 7 – Son of “Moanin’. Older, pre-Stanley Clarke style bass player (my preference). Wilbur Ware comes to mind for some reason. Nice cut. Bet I have it. 8 – Another nice cut, definitely in the groove on this BFT! Again, I bet this is a “gimme” and that I have it. Frustrating that my old brain can’t pull out the details. Love the tenor. Is that Art Blakey on drums? 9 – Great cut, I know I have it because I’m completing the lines in my head. Yusef Lateef, I believe? I’ll ID this one eventually. 10 – Good stuff, like the tenor player (which has been a consistent theme for me in this BFT, you'd think a sax player created it or something). And the percussion is fun. Hope I have it. 11 – Killer cut, wonderful tenor. Not great fidelity, drums especially recorded poorly, but would love to have this, it may be my favorite cut in the entire BFT. 70’s recording date? Post-Stanley Clarke bass player/drummer. Joe Henderson? 12 Title trace from this https://www.discogs.com/release/1239842-Azar-Lawrence-Bridge-Into-The-New-Age . Classic! I used this on a BFT several years ago (2014, BFT 129). Exactly in my wheelhouse. 13 – Vinyl sourced. Sounds like background music from a sci fi soundtrack. I don’t dislike it. 14 – Also vinyl sourced, and from a small label, likely from the 70’s. Being from Philly, I want to guess Byard Lancaster, Khan Jamal, and Monette Sudler – could make it the Sounds of Liberation, but the (unimpressive) trumpet throws me off. But I feel pretty confident about Lancaster and Jamal. Though maybe it’s a whole other set of musicians from Chicago or L.A. or somewhere and I’m dead wrong. Good cut, rough but spirited. Would love to have it on CD, but I’m going to guess this is probably the rarest album by far on the BFT, and may not be available on CD. May be that bandcamp will be my friend? Wonderful BFT, thanks so much, look forward to the ID’s. I’m sure guys like Jim will pick off a lot of the titles.

What rock music are you listening to? Non-Jazz, Non-Classical.

Not bad, but also does not meet my hopes/expectations. Ignore the Hot Rats comparisons. Think more Chunga's Revenge. -
A lot. I quit looking after hitting Bags. Fats, Dex, Wes, and Thad, all first quarter.

Charles Mingus Complete 1970s Atlantic box set
felser replied to ghost of miles's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
The Ronnie's set is amazingly good. Also be sure to pick up 'Mingus in Wonderland' on UA if you don't have it. Ervin, Handy, strong repertoire. And the Jordan/McPherson material on the Jazz Workshop Mosaic is strong. -

Good businesswoman. -
Yes, fascinating singer, well worth further exploration. You described her well. "Cow Cow Boogie" is a classic, and she did many cuts that are quite enjoyable in that jump-blues, country, pop, etc. hybrid of hers. Here is where I landed, after trying some different configurations.

Charles Mingus Complete 1970s Atlantic box set
felser replied to ghost of miles's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Need to include 'The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady' and 'Let My Children Hear Music' for sure to have a full understanding of Mingus. I'd say something like 1954-1975 for his prime. He kept evolving in different directions. Wish he had recorded in the late 60's. -

The title track from 'Pithecanthropus Erectus' was a landmark in 1956, and 1957's 'The Clown' has the peerless Haitian Fight Song" as well as the original 'Peggy's Blue Skylight". 'Oh Yeah' has Mingus on piano, with Booker Ervin and Rahsaan Roland Kirk on tenor. "Hog Callin' Blues" from that one is not to be missed. You can get it all, the aforementioned 'Blues and Roots' and 'Antibes' sets and more on this great CD set, will set you back less than $50. -
Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra - Live at IUCC 6/24/79 2CD

I received this from Matt at Nimbus West on June 8: IUCC UPDATE -SHORT Printing DELAY Greetings, Thanks for being a part of the Legendary IUCC series! We recently received the finished jackets for the next 2 volumes in the series and they unfortunately came out really bad.. Not even close to the proofs that we approved… Oversaturated print density which resulted in a overly dark and slightly blurry undefined image.. We have contracted a new Printer to reprint the jackets and they are in process right now. However, this will push things back by about 2-3 weeks… We are sorry for the inconvenience and short delay. It’s important to us that these turn out as intended with beautiful vibrant artwork, and promise it will be worth the short delay… The discs for the entire series have been manufactured so the rest of the series should move along quickly from here on out! Thanks for your patience! Bright moments, Nimbus West -

Yes, saw that. That price is from Zoverstocks in England, so $3.99 shipping plus the time of the overseas delivery, but great price. I had pre-ordered from importcd's at $58.75 + $2.99 shipping, so can't take advantage of the Zoverstocks price. -
Got it, I didn't realize that, thanks for the clarification! Will give a listen to the samples and see if I make one of my rare exceptions of paying for downloads.

But Tapscott passed in 1999. Are those copyright/release dates rather than performance dates?

Clifford Jordan - Drink Plenty Water (unissued 1974 Strata East session)
felser replied to colinmce's topic in New Releases
Which is, I believe, why we've never seen CD reissues of the Mtume and some other key titles from the catalog (#1 on my wish list is 'Reasons in Tonality' by the Jazz Contemporaries, with the Mtume, the Harold Vick, and the Cosmic Twins also high on my list) -
I always enjoy any of the iterations of this cooperative and the Mingus Dynasty. Saw the Mingus Dynasty live once at the Painted Bride Art Center when they had Jack Walrath, Joshua Redman, John Hicks, Michael Formanek, Alex Foster (forget the others) and it was an outstanding show.

I know that at least some of the P-Vine Strata-East's I have are needle drops, and not good ones at that (Descendants of Mike and Phoebe, Billy Parker), but In The World sounds to my old ears like it is from a strong tape source, though nothing in that Dolphy Series was ever a sonic marvel. -

I'm all in favor of more Strata-East music being reissued for sure, but not following the numbering - I show Glass Bead Games as SES 19737/8, and see the SES 19xxx as the usual Strata East numbering. -
