  1. agree totally on the mono here, and Roger + Happenings 10 Years Time Ago/Psycho Daisies is bonus track heaven.
  2. I don't have access to that interview - does Root talk about his first (and almost only) recording as leader, a 78 on the Roost label? I just found a copy of the record, but can't find any info - personnel, recording date, location, etc. If I still have it I don't know where it is, hopefully someone else with better filing or memory can answer this...
  3. Huge for Great Worst One, I'll have to have my brother in S'toon get some.

  6. Interstellar Space was certainly the one that convinced me to keep working on post-Love Supreme 'Trane, it was like 'oh, this is where he was going, OK then.'
  7. Took me 20 years to get from Love Supreme to Ascension, after Coltrane there's all sorts of possibilities - it's hard to say which way to go! Have fun exploring...

  11. BMWs are the official car of douchebags worldwide.
  12. There's a NYR article where he talks about the importance of various musics to him...
  13. I wouldn't say "harsh" as much as really dense or drastically/smugly circumscribed. Interesting that the calypso remark is Paul Oliver's, not Larkin's. As a more or less principled British leftist, what Oliver (at times and despite his many virtues as a writer on the blues) wanted the blues to be was a protest music. This led him down some primrose paths. No, I read the calypso remark as Larkin's, it comes between two quotations and is of a peice with the rest of his review wherein he makes many cogent points re blues and blues fan orthadoxy, yet remains steadfastly clueless overall. Some of the comments maintain that he was really a blues fan after all, but that's hard to credit given this and his general tenor.
  14. In the same issue some whiner complains about Frisell winning the Critics Poll when he's 'not a jazz guitarist but a C&W and wedding band player' or some such twaddle.
  15. In the Oct 2013 issue of Downbeat the redoubtable Branford Marsalis says regarding David 'Fathead' Newman "he's not a jazz musician". WTF?! I mean, even if you twist your definition so this comes out true, it's still bullshit, maybe more so...so what say you? http://www.downbeat.com/digitaledition/2013/DB201310/single_page_view/178.html
  16. The Sheepdogs are from Saskatoon and won some kind of band competition the other year.
  17. Why is There Air? And, while we're at it, What's your problem?
  18. When we lived in Australian, many years ago, my mom was looking for toothpicks but nobody knew what the heck she was talkin' 'bout...she finally found them and when she brought them up to the counter the clerk said "If you wanted sandwich flags why didn't you say so?"!
  19. Steve Lacy, The Rent, on Cavity Search, recorded here in Puddletown. Good record, great concert.
  20. Of course they won, I didn't watch - if I can restrain myself from wartching maybe they'll win the Grey Cup!
  21. "If Bird was a gunslinger, there'd be a lot of dead copycats." Good metaphor; bad legal theory.
