New: Robert Johnson -The Complete Original Masters
danasgoodstuff replied to J.A.W.'s topic in Miscellaneous Music
I think the time has passed for mega-expensive boxes... -
The background vocals sound a lot like my beloved Clovers to my ears, right off of "Little Mama" IIRC.

Maceo Parker "Children's World" from Roots Revisited, and a lot of Hank Crawford 'cause there's a lot of Hank in Maceo. A wonderful singer and a wonderful record. Indeed! And now I am taking the full plunge and have on order the "complete Goldwax recordings" and am leaning toward taking the plunge on at least one of the Ace compilations of the Goldwax label. My brother, who knows the soul genre much better than I do, sent me a link to an NPR piece on the label, that's how I found out about Carr. IMHO, there's only a few more by James Carr as good as "Pouring Water", but then there's not that much by anyone as good as that....enjoy!

bad plus debut rite of spring
danasgoodstuff replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I saw them at an outdoor freebie a few years back that wasn't very well attended, so I have to wonder why all the hype if the're really not that popular. I too find them plodding, both literally and metaphorically. -
So, I was on the net the other day reading 'bout the 100th ann. celebrations taking place down in the Delta this year and it just seemed so wrong - high-end spa stays complete with facials, not not that kind of facial, Robt probably would've been into that...
-
That certainly is...pedestrian.

I was in 4th grade, next day at school EVERYONE had seen it. Had an impact, it did. Sergio Mendez, not so much.

I live here (well, duh!)but probably won't go, unless I win a ticket to something...

Does this mean Peter Green gets his Les Paul back? Seriously though, who would have thought that Green would outlive Moore?

Art Pepper's Artist's House Sessions
danasgoodstuff replied to AndrewHill's topic in Recommendations
My memory is that So In Love is the best of the 3 (esp'ly the title tune) and it's worth $17 by itself. However, post-prison Pepper (which includes some on Contemporary)is a different animal than pre-, and not to everyone's tastes. Much more overtly 'expressive', sometimes selfconsciously so, but it usually works for me, YMMV, etc. -
so, in light of this discussion, I went back and re-listened to this several times. Love the head of the title tune, the solos aren't quite up to that level, and Jackie in particular isn't having his best day at Rudy's...but still it's easily 'release quality' to me, no worse than The Rumproller which is what did come out, not up to Search For the New Land or The Gigalo....

Bobby Hutcherson unreleased Blue Note material
danasgoodstuff replied to webbcity's topic in Discography
Family Affair was on either Blue Funk or Blue ('n) Soul, one of those various BN artists play R & B covers or originals that might as well be. OK, not great but good enough that if I could get the whole session at a sane price I probably would. -
Generally agree on this not being what it coud/should/ might have been, but what it is is still well worth hearing. You could make a very nice CD-R of all the compositions of his others did on Blue Note (Lee M, Freddie H, Wayne S, am I forgetting someone?)and another of the ones Coltrane and Shepp did on Impulse. Is his son Zane stil active?

Last art exhibition you visited?

Today I used my Portland Art Museum membership to see (on the very last day) Thomas Moran's Shashone Falls on the Snake River, big epic 19th C. landscape - very vivd light & shadow on water and rocks and sky. Also a couple of nice Monets on loan, one water lillies, one not. -
Brasil '66 Does Beatles Better Than the Beatles
danasgoodstuff replied to Teasing the Korean's topic in Miscellaneous Music
No, Brasil '66 does not do the Beatles better than the Beatles, Brasil '66 does do Brasil '66 doing the Beatles better, which is fine in itself and great if that's what you want but it's pretty much definitional that the Beatles do themselves best, they are the Beatles, Rutles & knickerbockers notwithstanding. For my $, there's about 2-3 hours worth of anyone else doing their tunage that I ever need to hear again and Sergio et al aren't on my short list, IMHO, YMMV, etc. But I love that you love it, on whatever planet you've living on. -
Hello & welcome. I'm not a huge vocals fan but I do have a couple of suggestions: Dinah Washington, Dinah Jams puts her in the context of just another player at a jam; any of Cassandra Wilson's albums for Bluenote put her own spin on what it means to be a contemporary jazz vocalist.

Listened to Ellinton's Nutcracker yesterday and loved it. Not too much else to say, just thought I'd stick that in here. And Nutcracker has so many good melodies to work with that theband just sounds like the're having fun...

Shotgun, by Jr. Walker & The All Stars: I was in love with Top 40 radio when I was a kid in the '60's, listing first on my 2-transistor radio, then on my 6-transistor, each glued to my ear. Shotgun thrilled me, but it was a few weeks until it dawned on me: I loved this song, but it had no words! How could that be? Is that allowed?[sorry, I forgot how to work the quote thingy] "Shotgun, shoot him 'fore he run/Do the jerk baby, do the jerk now" etc. Last I checked, those are words, a little surreal perhaps, but words nonetheless. perhaps you were thinking of another Jr. Walker recording, "Cleo's Mood" or "Brainwasher"? -
Damn, I loves me some Stax records - Wm Bell "I Forgot to Be Your Lover" which I've appended to my cassette copy of Soul of a Bell 'cause I love that track from '68 but generally like earlier Stax better & Eddie Floyd "Something You Got" from the Knock On Wood album, amix tape of Memphis does New Orleans may be in the offing.
