Cindy Blackman Santana - Give the Drummer Some
danasgoodstuff replied to GA Russell's topic in New Releases
Could be good, although these free-for-alls usually aren't. did Cindy record with Jackie Mac or just play some gigs? Cindy is a fine drummer. -
Conrad Herwig - The Latin Side of Horace Silver
danasgoodstuff replied to GA Russell's topic in New Releases
Isn't this kinda department of redundancy department stuff? I mean, Horace was already pretty latin-esque to start with...although sometimes more than others. -
I've been working on an imaginary mega-box of Blue Note Groove Things (so formulated to be a little broader than Son 0f sidewinder, but still have some parameters - no walking basslines, no shuffles). and I'd say the first recording that had all the pieces in place was Donald Byrd's "Pentecostal Feeling" from Free Form, which was recorded in December, 1961 but not issued til much later (4 or 5 years IIRC). There were things that had some of the pieces or were in some way a precedent, but to my ears "Watermelon Man" was the first issued and "The Sidewinder" opened the gates to a slew of knockoffs, but not til it had become huge and the distributors were clamoring for it. I could go on, but I'll leave it here for now. It is almost entirely a BN thing, to my ears, unless you include the later sort of groove centered on Idris/Leo's drumming, then it's BN and Prestige.

and danceable, which might help account for it being so hard to find used - people other than hard core jazz fans buy it too.

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg has died.
danasgoodstuff replied to sonnymax's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
She & Scalia are probably digging some of their beloved opera right now, and they did agree on cases once in a while too. Those who see the SCOTUS in simply partisan terms should go to their website and read some of this years decisions 'cause they ain't been like that this year at all. -
Van got screwed by actual gangsters early in his career, not surprising that he's a little paranoid. Yeats and many others believed some crazy ass shit too.

AQI here is below 200 for the first time since last week. At least it's not Happy Camp, CA where the readings were approaching 'you're dead' recently.
-
This strikes me as of relatively recent vintage, and only mildly amusing.

Could be, and in that case I'd have to admit that you may have evolved a little further than I in this regard.

No doubt fueled by the same insecurity that fueled his reactionary-ness, bullying, and general belligerence. Trying to bluff his way thru 'cause he feared he couldn't make it otherwise.
-
Nevermind, I found the bit I was looking for. I still can't believe he even got paid to write at all. And I don't usually speak ill of the dead either, but in this regard at least he was truly exceptional.

Does anyone have a link to the passage in KC Lightening where he goes on about Bird and Chinese food and trains? I think someone quoted it here once.

Of course it was Alberta, said the person who used to live in SK. -
COVID-19 III: No Politics For Thee

What part of Canada, or is that too political? -
Unbelievably bad air here in Portland. And the smoke has been keeping it much cooler than it would otherwise be. And someone has been arrested for arson in the Southern part of the State where two town burnt down, so the political climate may get even uglier too.

I love Then Play On and Kiln House, maybe this box will free up some used copies of the others and I can fill in the gaps.

Thanks all.

Bought during a piano/sax duet craze and it survived the subsequent purge when I realized I didn't need every one of those ever done. Not as much of an Art Pepper fan as I used to be, I was just completely enthralled at one point. And definitely not as big on the VV recordings as I once was - the phrase 'trying too hard' comes to mind. But I guess he had to get it out of his system, and he certainly goes at it head on; now I prefer lots of other things by Art both before and after.

I was hoping maybe some one would recomend some later day recordings by Gary - I think the last I have is Just so Happens with Fill f. from '94.

Albert Ayler/Gary Peacock/Sunny Murray, Spiritual Unity Gary did many wonderful things with many wonderful people, but surely this is an apex, if not the one and only, what he'll be best remembered for. As challenging as Ayler was to Western norms, surely the bigger challenge for a bass player was 'what do I do if the drummer isn't playing time (at least not in a conventional way)?' Do I work extra hard to nail down the time or go with the flow? Albert worked with some other fine bassists, but I don't know that any of them got him any better, at least not this stage - the later bands with Donald are a very different thing.

DeJohnette took down his statement and Wiki went back to treating him as alive - no now I just checked and the've gone back to saying he died, so it appears to be at least an open question. The site claiming it was a hoax is a joke site, but maybe they were in on it? In any case, let's just talk about his playing here. Yes, it's an extraordinary album. Was Rivers with Miles when Gary spent a couple of months as a sub in the spring of '64?

My daughter had an inexplicable liking for Ravi Shankar when she was quite young, and once asked me to take off the BB King i had on i the car and play the Muddy Waters instead.

That may well be, but in either case let's celebrate all the great music he's been involved in thru the years...and I've started a thread to do just that:
-
Since he's apparently still with us, let's take this opportunity to celebrate all the fine music he's been involved with. At the moment I'm listening to Don Pullen's New Beginnings which was a bit of a reunion for Peacock and Tony Williams, but still very much Pullen's record since he wrote all of it and his signature piano moves are all over it. Does anyone know what's up with the timings shown for the 6 tunes on al configurations being all so wildly off/short? Anyway, Gary and tony sound great together here to my ears.
