Need recs on Pentangle/Fairport Convention
danasgoodstuff replied to skeith's topic in Recommendations
I was listening to the Sandy Denny box and something came on that sounded like Weather Report in the middle ages, where can I get more of that? -
Thanks for all the replies, wide variety of opinions as usual. I guess I was being too cryptic, as usual, what I was trying to get at more than the relative merits of those particular albums, is the joys of 'lesser works' in general and the role of perceptions and reputations in same...for a different example, I think I've enjoyed Eddie Floyd's Knock On Wood (Album) and Johnny Taylor's Wanted One Soul Singer and Wm Bell's Soul of a Bell as much as anything on Stax - and not, I like to think, because I'm a genre or label fanatic but because the're just good music and sometimes that's good enough, the genre conventions and the songwriting (or lack thereof) just falls away and I hear a bunch of people working together to make it as good as they can in that moment.

Up, don't care if you dislike Justin, haven't heard of Stapleton, dislike country, awards, whatever, just watch....

The most alive thing I've seen on an awards show in ages.

So, recently I was feeling sorry for myself thinking I might not get around to re-listening to all the music I've spent so much time & $ collecting and I pulled out Lee Morgan's Charisma (Liberty LP) and The Sixth Sense (expanded CD) - generally thought of as lesser efforts, but I quite enjoyed them. Lowered expectations or is the received opinion here just wrong?
-
Well no, I didn't have anything to do with writing or producing this - I'm just the staff liaison for the non-staff people who are using our space to put it on. I know people who had musical and business dealings with him and I certainly saw him play a few times round town.

Yes, anytime you're dealing with a box that's any kind of 'complete' there's going to be a filler issue but to my ears it's more of an issue here precisely because of Sam Phillips' preference for the raw and unfiltered - when there's no strong songwriting, instrumental virtuosity or other sorts of professionalism to fall back on. then the inspired stuff may well be quite special and wonderful but the uninspired is not going to be much of anything. Maybe I was just hoping for some hidden gems I didn't find. By comparison, the bulk of Blue Note's everyday work, or Stax mk I, is gloriously strong.

The library where I work has this, turns out I already heard/had most of the good stuff, lots of filler IMHO, YMMV.

So, has anyone here got some version of this and what do you think? -
James Carter's suit and sax seem so carefully color co-ordinated that I have to wonder if he has different saxes for different suits, or vice versa?

i can't listen right now (darn), but isn't all Pres from 1937 sublime? Or is this more sublime?

Album covers with a barn or barns

Having lived in Saskatchewan, it'd be hard to not know/notice. -
My analyst told me/That I was right out of my head...but I like Twisted and so did Joni & Bette. Moody's Mood's ok too, but most of the rest not so much.

That's not a barn, it's 3 grain elevators. -
Last art exhibition you visited?

Went to the Albright Knox when I was in Buffalo last week and was reminded that I once had a work exhibited there when I was in Kindergarten or 1st grade. -

I believe that Mr Sangrey described it in these pages as 'high level coasting' or something to that effect...that's a little harsh but I get his point. Wynton Kelly is the most engaged, IMHO. -
Whole different tunes, or just alternate takes?

IMHO Laswell's greatest triumph as a producer and Sharrock's masterpiece, intense and freewheeling yet focused and succinct. Glad to to it coming back into print, wonder if there's more SS to come. Doesn't remind me of Carlos at all, YMMV. My only quibble is I might have sequenced it differently.

ELO should only get in if they make it a combo Move/ELO induction. I have no particular argument with the others, no particular thing for them either. Nile Rogers should be in as a producer/session player but how much of an actual group were Chic (whatever that means)? Spinners, yes, long dues paid and excellence, even if some of it was Thom Bell & other supporting players.

I thought it was "The creator has a master plan/A gold Cadillac for my main man", or is that a defferent verse?
