  1. People who loath Christmas music irritate me, the music itself not so much. Although I'd have to admit "gramma got Run Over" is far from a favorite. and I quite like Lennon's Merry Xmas (War is Over)", both to listen to and to play myself.
  2. Has anyone else been following the coverage of his demise and offical (Quebec) state funeral and all the reminising about his life? I started watching Hockey in '66 so I certainly remember the Habs of that era. I'd forgotten they'd changed the power play rules after he scored 3 goals in less than a minute. I was particularly struck by Geof Molson saying that his parent, English speaking team (and beer) owners held M. Beliveau up as an exemplar of what he should aspoire to growing up to be. What say you?
  3. http://www.amazon.com/Shazam-Move/dp/B002MHCCCS/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1418178308&sr=1-1&keywords=move+shazam I've always liked this one, pretty much from when it was new, a long time ago.
  4. It (ALS) helped me get thru some v. hard times, so I love it.
  5. KMHD here in Portland, OR sporadically - I know some DJs and it can be good, but it can be very uneven too.
  6. Seriously, I like the Sing Your Own Messiah, although I'm not sure the people next to me enjoyed my limited sightsinging skills so much.
  7. I thought there was only one Messiah?
  8. Isn't Plano where the guy who inspired Willies' Pretty Paper from Plano?
  9. Clovers - One Mint Julep (written by that great imbiber, Rudy Tombs), and then everything else they did, at least for Atlantic Joe Turner - Boss of the Blues Joe Tex - CC Rider Yardbirds - "Shapes of Things" & Five Live Muddy Waters - a/k/a Mckinley Morganfield, I have this material in different packages now, but this is what first knocked me out Howlin' Wolf - London Sessions, I won this by getting to the quarter finals in a College of Music Knowledge contest in high school Chuck Berry - Golden Decade, yes I was very Chess-centric for awhile Little Richard - 17 Grooviest Marty Robbins - Gunfighter Ballads, this and some cowboy 78s I had as a child were my 1st C&W loves Louvin Brothers - Sorrowful Songs of Life Son House - Death Letter Blind Lemon Johnson - Jack of Diamonds Stravinsky - Rite of Spring Otis Redding - White Chritmas, confirming my preference for interp over composing these are among the things that knocked me out early on
  10. Did Joni talk about Saskatchewan?
  11. I guess this guy Garth was one of Ronnie Hawkins' band, the Hawks, later The Band. Is that correct? MG Yup, Garth Hudson, member of the Hawks, the Band, still going. Paid to give the other Hawks lessons.
  12. You going to be there today for First Thursday?
  13. Turned 60 gthe other month, went to a friend from law school's 60th the other day, saw some peoples I hadn't seen in x, y or z number of years. My 12 yr old daughter continues to be a joy. It's not quite all good, but pretty much...
  14. I'd grab whichever two were worth the most so I could replace the rest of 'em just as soon and cheaply as possible. Having all the Jackie Mac, or at least all the Bluenotes, is a necessary thing - unless I was jumping out of the fire and into the frying pan!
  15. I loves me some Bobby Keys. I actually have, and have struggled thru, a transcription of his solo on "Brown Sugar", something I almost never do. He may have been a King Curtis acolyte, but he had fully internalized that style and spoke it fluently.
  16. The roughies (such an absurd nickname, but what has the official name got to do with Sk?) will be back next year, or not...depending on how well our QB heals.
  17. Poking around the web I found an interesting story 'bout him being involved in a thing in support of the UK miners strike because his folks had been miners too.
  18. Etc. is just as unique as the others, only more subtly so, IMHO. One of the things I particularly dig about it is Cecil McBee. And it's not really just another mid-60s Wayne Shorter BlueNote, not Adams Apple pt II, despite the title, ti's way darker for starters...
  19. Eight?! Why not at least 10?
  20. I thought Bird and Round Midnight were both pretty much a mess, don't expect much from the forthcoming Miles biopic, and generally wish Hollywood would leave jazz alone. Bill Moody's books were amusing til he had his protaganist dis Burt B... And focussing on how people died is morbid, but if you want to do that how about a Sam Cooke biopic, told from Bobby Womack's POV?
  21. Paul Schaffer and the guys did this on Letterman last night and gave a little shout out to Jimmy and his brother.
  22. Yes, i totally loved that before I had any idea who jimmy (and David) Ruffin were, or what it meant to be brokenhearted...morose fucker that I am.
  23. I guess now we know what becomes of the brokenhearted.
