All of mine are cds.

No they are not cdrs.

Postal rates recently changed, not really announced. To Germany you should ask $12 airmail for 1 lp. Signature confirmation drives up the cost considerably -- the last I looked it was double the amount. And never, EVER ship to Italy. Their mail system is so corrupt and/or inefficient there is little guarantee it will be delivered safely. I lost an Andrew Hill Mosaic when shipped to a buyer in Italy a couple of years ago.

I'll second the Naxos set.

What step would that be? They went further in reducing or eliminating too-direct references to jazz/blues. I'd say too they were more successful in establishing networks of like-minded practitioners and that too put a real motor on the european improv scene. Did they "Reduce or eliminate" or did they replace it with references to their own musical heritages?

Barney Wilen lps, like Sonny Clark, command obscenely high prices on ebay. There is a high demand for them overseas -- why these artists in particular -- who knows?

You are right about responding to one aspect over the other. While Bill might argue that no work supersedes another, are they equal in quality or as successful in conception and execution? I'm not putting down some of his Black Saint/Soul Note material; there are some excellent moments, but I won't pull them off the shelves to play them as often as some others.

You have to be real patient. To this day Vade Mecum and Sisyphus just don't do it for me the way Intents and Purposes has.

Vinyl madness of a different kind
Stefan Wood replied to Big Beat Steve's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
It happens. Only the usual suspects (Prestige, Blue Note, Riverside, certain Columbia "6 eyes", Fantasy, Contemporary) would still be worth something without their covers, but only if there are no scratches or marks. Otherwise a collection like this would be worth to someone who wants to hear the music. -
Anything by Bebo Valdes.

Oh enough with the format wars. I'm thankful this is coming out, period!
-
It is what it is. Craigslist is only as good as the seller and his ad. Audiogon is generally better but expect to pay accordingly.

The Liszt Hyperion box alone should take up the rest of the year.

Perhaps give the recent Florida Big Band disc a try first?? I found the RCA 'all-star' group discs (from '99) more than just a bit impenetrable at first (for a few years, actually), but have grown to like them (though I wouldn't go so far as to say 'love'). The Florida big band date, on the other hand, knocked me on my ass from the git go. The key difference, for me, was the rhythm section. Sam's got an electric bass player (saw him with Sam in Topeka a few years ago), who also plays with his local big band. I was skeptical at first (electric in that kind of context?), but he/they soon won me over. He and the drummer were very tight. To be perfectly honest, I'm probably a little more excited about this Rivers Select, than I might have been with his 70's small-group recordings. Anybody else got Aurora, can you help me testify?!! Yes, and double Amen to that!!!!!!! I will be all over this set!

Stefan Wood replied to mikeweil's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Sparkle is a really nice album, underrated IMHO. -
I guess I meant "soaring" Welcome! Hope you'll enjoy it! But then I do assume you've been somewhat familiar with the music for a while Oh yes! Heard it all from one of "those" blogs......
