  1. I saw this group at the Patterson up in Baltimore, coming into it cold, having never heard this group, though I was familiar with Hu Vibrational, which has Rudolph and Hamid Drake in it. What a great show! They have just released a cd on Justin Time Records, and most of the music performed was on the album. Highly recommended -- if you like Brotherhood of Breath, George Russell, electric Miles, you should like this cd. Long winded review on AMG
  2. Come Back to DC!!!!!
  3. I assume you want the big boxes, cause the Selects make for terrible flotation devices.
  4. Got a lead on this, thanks to a fellow board member.
  5. Oh yeah, and how much is ebay getting in fees? 30 grand????
  6. From Ireland. I shudder to think about the shipping costs.
  7. Nice discussion. As much as I love the material from Blue Note, Riverside, Contemporary, etc., I don't listen to it as much these days. I don't know if it because I absorbed it all, or if it is just too comfortable and familiar for me. I still am excited by 60's avant jazz, 70's jazz fusion, some progressive rock, and contemporary jazz, like Nicole Michell, Hu Vibrations, Ethnic Heritage Ensemble, etc. But it can't be all one sided. I still love listening to Cuban music, Nuyorican Salsa, late Romantic classical, and as of late, my interest in African music has been revived by cds from Soundway Records, like the Ghana Afro funk compilations and the recent Nigerian 2 cd set of highlife and funk. I'll never get tired of listening to Fela and James Brown. Jazz wasn't created in a vacuum, so why should I listen to only jazz?
  8. Thanks guys! I'll just have to be patient......
  9. I'm looking for the box set of The Collection: Children at Play/Family Affair/Bracknell Breakdown/in Conference/Down South. It's a long shot, even though the set was available in 2000, but is long out of print. I missed the boat on this one, but if anyone has a bead on this please send me a PM.
  10. Soundway. The same folks who put out two volumes of Ghana funk music, which are also must haves. This is a nice collection as well. Afrobeat, some Highlife, and there's a lot of rumba and Cuban influences as well.
  11. He declined an offer of $28 million some years ago? But is now willing to part with it for 3????? When I lived in Pittsburgh in my college years, or visiting old school chums years afterward, I had always wanted to visit the store. But it was always closed.
  12. I like these:
  13. Buy them. Or else. Now.
  14. Ya know, I'm all for tossing you old geezers into the Logan's Run "carousel":
  15. Before the change over to Concord, Fantasy released a nice series of samplers of their various label holdings. Thoughtful and great sound.
  16. Bertrand, The Tubby Hayes is one of the blandest live dates I have ever heard. You don't need it. I went to Daedalus after the New Year and picked up the Warne Marsh cds and the Louis Jordan Transcription discs. Good stuff!
  17. Agreed. I wonder if it is really that difficult to pull together sets of sessions post-1970, as opposed to pre WWII jazz. I would think there would be an audience for a Braxton Arista, or an AIR RCA select set, at least ass much if not more than a Boogie Woogie Piano Select.
  18. No it's not THAT fucked up. Not even close.
  19. I agree. However, we can't hold on to the past forever, especially here in the US, where we pave over our history.
  20. So, will that be it for Blue Note?
  21. Vista is the one with problems.
  22. It's not just classical music -- it exists in the visual arts as well. I work at a museum that is conservative by nature with the subject matter of its exhibitions and programs. I can't tell you how often when an exhibit featuring a modern or contemporary artist occurs the mixed reactions I can hear from visitors, as opposed to more visually pleasing shows like Hopper, for example. Modern art still has not gained mass acceptance where they can be money makers like the Impressionists.
  23. A metaphysical drama.
