  1. Re:NYC. We have friends who live in a nice 2 bedroom in a doorman hi-rize on E 93 St. Monthly maintenance $1,600 [garage and gym are extra]. That's just maintenance, mortgage is another $2,500/mo. My $950/mo Brooklyn 1 bedroom doesn't have a garage or a gym, but it it doesn't cost $1,600/mo in maintenance fees either [in fact the only maintenace fee that I incurred last year was $20 I gave to the lazy fat super for Christmas] BTW, if anyone is interested in a long term rental, I will be looking to sublet my crib, cause we're finally moving from NY to RI in the early Summer. Beats the crap out of whatever became of New York. I used to love the city once. Been here for 15+ years. Almost half of my life. Can't do it any more. Too bad. Really don't want to sound dramatic, but this place has finally gone to shit. Was browsing through the Craig's List the other day to see how much I could get for my place and saw a typical ad for a sublet - 1 bedroom on a 5th floor walk up in NOHO. 70{!!!!!} square feet. $950/mo + utilities. Someone will take it. Fuck it...
  2. wfmu.org The coolest weirdest nerdiest radio station in the Nation IMHO. Just paypal'ed them my donation. A t-shirt is in the mail. Check them out. No commercials, baby!
  3. Ahh, the fond memories of St. Patrick's Day are streaming back..being on call, trying to restrain the mildly inebriated gentleman with a broken jaw, word "Timberland" clearly and firmly imprinted on his technicolored face. Good times....
  4. Joe Maneri - Paniots Nine Not intended as an album per se, but this is the first occurance of Maneri on record[correct me if I'm wrong]
  5. I guess I'll keep it for the curiosity's sake then. After all, my favorite musicians are on it. Too bad about the sound though... Thanks for the heads-up on the FS cd. Another ugly cover?
  6. Maitre Brownais, I haven't played the Lp yet, just read the description of how amazing it is on the back cover on the bus yesterday. They say you're supposed to play the Jazz half of it[the right side, if I remember correctly], while the left channel is the Pop side. Or maybe the other way around. I was thinking I could finally have some use for the mono switch on my rig. Is the Fresh Sound cd in Stereo?
  7. Another major find yesterday - Benny Golson's Pop+Jazz=Swing, on Audiofidelity. Minty mint, even with the original pvc inner sleeve. $3
  8. Best wishes and the best of health !!!
  9. I have a couple of interesting things, but this cabinet size photograph of Alpha Armstrong remains my favorite. It is signed and dated 1934, in England, during her husband's European "Exile", which by some accounts she helped bring about, as well as end, luckily for all of us [especially him].
  10. ps. Locke and Kimbrough do Charlie Haden's Silence on Saturn's Child. It's a killer tune.
  11. I had the friggin FLU for a week. Now working from 8 to 6-30, so I just crash at night. Just starting to dig into the BFT now. You've got to buy Saturn's Child. It's a killer date. I'm sure you'll enjoy it!
  12. I don't care for Donald Harrison's playing, however dissing Joe Locke because of his endorcement of whatever vibes company is not right. Like JS said, cats have been endorsing stuff since the dawn of days. Miles endorsed AR speakers, among other things. Check out Joe Locke on his two albums with Frank Kimbrough for the Omnitone label, Saturn's Child and The Willow. Bottom-line is that he's THE premier vibes player these days.
  13. Even though I have never seen this film, I am very much interested in hearing the soundtrack. Here's what I found about it on the web - 1.Nostalgia In Times Square 2.unknown titles Personnel Jimmy Knepper - trombone Shafi Hadi - tenor sax Horace Parlan - piano Phineas Newborn - piano [!!!!!!!] Charles Mingus - bass Dannie Richmond - drums unknown trumpet, flute, alto sax Date and location Spring 1958, New York City Remaining music for soundtrack of Shadows by Shafi Hadi. Coincidentally, I have Jemeel Moondoc's album titled Nostalgia In Times Square that features the title track...
  14. A question from a non-musician - is this a phrase from one of his compositions, and which one? Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx
  15. I'm surprised Claxton's "Jazz Seen" folio is hard to find. It used to be ubiquitous in places like Tower and Virgin, inexpensive for such a large book, about $25 or so. Is it out of print?
  16. Gone, to a good home. I'm surprised it took so long...
  17. I'll post a pic of the whole package later this week. I'm not at home now, but I'm pretty sure it's a 33, not a 45.
  18. Just bought the cutest thing - a mint 7"EP of Morgan's Corn Bread. Haven't played it yet. Comes with a bunch of album cover stickers and a tear-away sheet of juke box labels. Has a discrete drill hole almost near the middle of cover [why?]. I haven't seen too many 7" BN EPs. What's the story with these?
  19. Is that the one where McDaniels complains of a bad can of peas or sardines or something? I had that album. Didn't inspire me to run home to my tv to watch the revolution, if you know what I mean. How about this one -
  20. I have an extra dvd of the famous Monk documentary. Clean in/out. $15 shipped. PM if interested.

    John Dennis

As some of you folks might remember I did an interview with Walt Dickerson a couple of years back. He spoke about John Dennis quite a bit. They were childhood friends. It may still be available online?
  22. These are some of the albums I have that Danny Bank helped record.. Roll 'Em Monster Pre Bird Here Comes Frank Foster The Dynamic Duo Listen To Art Farmer And The Orchestra Slide Trombone Joyride Helen Merrill Delightfulee aforementioned Sketches Of Spain man's been around!
  23. Hey, these are my initials, too. You! hypocrite lecteur! - mon semblable, - mon frere!
  24. I attended the auction yesterday. It is all that was written about it - and more. I shot a video of all the items they had on preview. Mouth-watering items, many of which really belong in a museum. An unforgettable event.
  25. Somewhat?! No s@#t! PR was a poster-boy for the Soviets for many many years. Unlike many other people of the arts who were initially enamored by the comunist utopia, but came to see the light later on, Robeson didn't take off his rose-colored glasses till his death [i could be wrong, I'm not very familiar with his twilight years].
