Do Podcasts Count as Radio?
The Magnificent Goldberg replied to JSngry's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
Pretty good playlist. I hears Sonny Knight's "Let's get it on" in the 60s and have been looking for it ever since - well, really, waiting for my mate to die and leave it to me in his will (but he hasn't got "Belly rub" ). I've been watching Larry Grogan for a while, but slipped lately. Thanks for letting me know about this. MG -
How's the weather?
The Magnificent Goldberg replied to GregK's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Britain's been flooded. Around here, though, we haven't had much more rain than usual - a lot. My father-in-law came from Bentley, in Yorkshire, where the flooding is worst. My wife's cousin - about 60-ish, lives on slightly higher ground - had to wade through waist deep water to rescue her aunt in her 80s. How people in that position are going to be able to put their lives back together again is quite hard to see. Apparently, my wife's cousin says, there was a dam which hadn't been maintained as it should by Yorkshire Water (the worst water firm in Britain, by all accounts) and they had to release a lot out of some kind of side channel - through Bentley. That was OK, because Bentley is an old coal mining village and full of socialists. If they'd released the water on the other side of the reservoir, it would have flooded a golf course. MG -

What music did you buy today?
The Magnificent Goldberg replied to tonym's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Well, on Saturday, the postman brought this which is vol 1 of a set of two that I ordered together, but which have been despatched separately. These two CDs contain all the tracks from three LPs Sax 5th Avenue - by Johnny Beecher (a pseudonym) - Charter 102 (1963) On the scene - by Johnny Beecher (a pseudonym) - Charter 104 (1963) (I have a couple of 45s of the Charter material) Blue martini - by Plas Johnson - Ava 24 (1964) Unfortunately, they don't appear to have included the best of these Charter tracks - "Jack sax the city" which JUMPS! (Though that may have been a retitling ofr the British issue of something that I'll find on vol 2.) The Charter material has the great Bert Kendricks on organ. Kendricks is best known for playing on Jimmy Witherspoon's "Evenin' blues". The Ava material has an orchestral accompaniment. Very nice stuff! And today, volume 2 arrived. I am very pissed off that none of the tracks has turned out to be a renamed "Jack sax the city". Thank God I have the 45! (Should have put it in the BFT.) MG -

Very helpful SS1 - this lot is no great revelation. But YOU should get "Gravy train" and "Midnight special" - two ultra greasy albums - 4078 & 4079 - a good week for grease that was (with "Workout" 4080). MG -

Ah, the other thing I notice is that you don't have the link at the bottom that pulls up the last three or so pages of new posts. Is that another job for later? MG

I don't think education is a good measure of intelligence. I left school at 16 with 4 "O" levels - in today's terms, that's pretty well without qualifications. I tend to agree with Paul - you do what you do and you become what you become. And that's more about you than your family. MG -

Strange that wasn't issued on OJC. It does look nice. Not for $38, though. MG I'd avoid the dreaded 'Remastered for Stereo' Mm yes - hadn't noticed that. Actually, I never saw a Prestige album with that on it - or can't remember. MG -

The Magnificent Goldberg replied to The Magnificent Goldberg's topic in Re-issues
Thanks Ghost. Yes, this is Atlantic 1255, issued in 1957 but, according to the sleeve notes, recorded in 1955. Reissued in Europe in the Atlantic Masters series. Cheapo. It's certainly loungey - but with the Buckner-style organ accompaniment - and some good guitar solos from Lee Robinson - and a rather quirky deliver of the vocals, it's a good deal more interesting than most of that kind of thing, I reckon. Don Patterson - Satisfaction - Prestige Transatlantic UK issue Don Patterson - Soul happening - Prestige Saba Germany issue These two would make an excellent twofer. Apart from the LP he made under Paul Weeden's name, these are the only oran, guitar, drums albums Don Made (I think). MG -
I feel terribly cheated that "Soul train" was never shown over here.... Thanks Jim. MG

Anyone heard the Grover Washington at Monterey 1994? I never even heard of it before. The Etta James album, "Etta James" is one I've been waiting to be reissued on CD forever. I think this is its first CD issue. Her greatest LP ever! MG
