I found this from poking around the Mosaic site: DON'T TAKE YOUR LOVE FROM ME:: (N) Bobby Hackett (cor), Cutty Cutshall, one or two unknown (tb), Dick Cary (E flat horn), Bob Wilber (ts,ss), four unknown (saxes & reeds), Dick Hyman (p, harpsichord), unknown (g), John Dengler (bass), unknown (d,tambourine), three females (background vocals), David Terry (arr, cond) NYC, November 27,1957 21793 Autumn Serenade T 1002 21794 Moonlight Serenade - 21795 The Thrill Is Gone - 21796 Softly As In A Morning Sunrise Hmmm... harpsichord, tambourine, and 'three females' doing background vocals? Does this, maybe, say, "don't buy me, spend your money on a different Mosaic box?" Here is another thread regarding the Bobby Hackett Mosaic. >link<

I ordered from CDUniverse once. It was a good experience for me. However, I do like the shipping speed offered by Mosaic. I tend to receive my Mosaic orders within three days of ordering, even when the package must be delivered from the East Coast to the West Coast. I place my Mosaic order, with Mosaic, on one day and Mosaic ships the next day.

Pleeeeeeaaaaassseeee stop! I was thinking of purchasing the JJ Johnson Mosaic this week. I've also been trying to decide whether (or not) to add the Elvin Jones, Bobby Hackett and/or Johnny Hodges Mosaics to the same order.

This Pic Appears In Every Jazz Google Search
wesbed replied to Soulstation1's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Were you doing an image search or a general web search? I've done my share of jazz searches using Google, AllTheWeb, and the like. I've never had either of these pictures pop as a result of my searches. -
I've read so much 'bad' about this box. I went, about 20 minutes ago, and listened to the sound clips on the Mosaic site. Not that I'm in the mood to buy this set (yet)... but, it sounds quite good to me. You don't get to hear much of the strings and such playing behind Hackett on the Mosaic sound clips. Hackett, however, sounds hot/cool and right on. I believe I could enjoy Hackett's cornet for an extended evening of listening. Maybe I'm just in an odd mood on a Sunday night? For tonight, though, this music sounds very inviting and cozy.

The Bennie Green Select from Koch Entertainment? Maybe Koch is a distributor? >link<

Here's the Chambers Select too. >link< Yeah, who is Koch Entertainment?

Damn, damn, and damn again. I just checked the Mosaic site. It looks like the Hodges box is a Malcolm Addey remaster. I'll almost buy a Mosaic box based solely on Addey's name.

I'm planning, as a definite, to purchase the J.J. Johnson Mosaic this-coming week. I was considering adding the Elvin Jones Mosaic to the same order. Damn, now I have to consider, instead, the Johnny Hodges box. Or, maybe I should just get all three Mosaics? Along with the most recent two Selects? Yeah, yeah, now I'm talkin'.

I got some gas, and I'm not letting it out.
wesbed replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
The price of gas is running between $1.99 to $2.09 in Tucson, Arizona. I've been spending between $25 and $30 to fill my tank for several weeks. I wonder how long till the high gas price begins to cause other parts of the economy to falter? People can afford to purchase gasoline PLUS everything else only for so long. Something's got to give. Either, buy less gas (yeah, good luck at being able to drive your car less), or buy less of other things. -
Ever since I read these words from JSngry, I've been enjoying and appreciating Art Pepper. I've never thought too much about Pepper till now. Not too much good, not too much bad. JSngry's words hit home with me. I've been, recently, listening to Art Pepper and liking every well-placed note. It sounds as if Art might blow a lip or a reed and spew something mysterious all over the place. At the same time, there is pleasure in knowing he can continue playing, the listener can continue listening, and nothing will EVER blow (except for the great music blowing through Pepper's horn).

Sellers often advertise, on eBay, stating that the CDs they're offering retain the OBI strip. This release of Jimmy Giuffre's 'The Easy Way' has a sort-of OBI strip: I have several of the Verve Digipak releases with the OBI strip attached. Sometimes I want to remove the strip, get it out of the way, and toss it in the garbage can. Is there any reason to keep the OBI strip? Does it add some kind of mystical value to the CD packaging? Or, maybe the strip has no value but collectors like to keep it intact because it's part of the original packaging? As asked previously in this thread, how is 'OBI' pronounced? The same as the pronunciation used in Star Wars? Should 'OBI' be capitalized or is it just a word written like so: 'Obi?'

I've never heard of John LaPorta. Still, the candle from B. Goren. is a nice touch.

Just like Elvin Jones, nothing in the Google News about Burrell either. Both men must still be alive and doing their thing the way only they know how.

Stop it! Stop it now! I can't add any more Mosaics to my list. No more! No, no, no more. Uh-uh, no way. No more.

Is this it? It sold for $24.99. >eBay link<

Morgan/Shorter and Chambers/Kelly Vee Jays
wesbed replied to DrJ's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I've heard only the Mosaic version of the Vee Jays. I don't know how the sound quality is on the non-Mosaic issues. The Addey remaster on the Mosaic release is VERY good. I've enjoyed BOTH sets very, very much (you can read my other posts in this thread). It just seems like it's not often that I'm able to experience music of this time-era, with this quality of sound and documentation. To me, and others may disagree, the sound quality of these sets is better than what's being currently released by Blue Note in the RVG and Conn series. You know, it's an Addey! Claude wrote something that he believes Vee Jay may have done a better job at creating the original master, than Blue Note, back in the day. The only drawback, all the alternate takes. You're paying for 6 disks and getting about 3 to 4 disks worth of unique music. I don't know. These are just really good sets, music-wise, sound-wise, and you get the Mosaic packaging too. If, on the other hand, you're not too much into piano trios of late, maybe get the Morgan/Shorter? -
Morgan/Shorter and Chambers/Kelly Vee Jays
wesbed replied to DrJ's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
The Vee Jay Mosaic are quite good. I get good vibes when I pull the boxes out of my closet in anticipation of listening to the music. I was concerned, too, about the alternate takes. The Mosaic manual discusses the alternate takes and what is different about each, what to listen for. Sort of interesting. I program my CD player to skip the alternate takes and it all flows well from there. In this manner, you acquire even more music that you never listen to. -
If you could only buy one of the Vee-Jays
wesbed replied to John Tapscott's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
You were not a fool, Jazzmoose. Both boxes are exuberant, sublime, stylish, luxurious, and tasty collections of music. I purchased both sets, too. I'm 'out' the extra money but I sure don't feel like a fool. -
If you could only buy one of the Vee-Jays
wesbed replied to John Tapscott's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Man, I can't offer any advice. It's difficult to choose between two 'good' things. As I view the poll, right now, it's running 50% for each set. Figures. Good luck, John Tapscott. Maybe skip the electric bill, like Soulstation1, and get both sets? The remastering and the packaging are EXCELLENT on both sets. Each set contains equally strong playing and large numbers of alternate takes. I do like the Frank Strozier set included in the Kelly/Chambers box. But, I also enjoy the terrific playing from Morgan and Shorter on Morgan/Shorter box. I progam my CD player to skip the alternate takes (when playing either of the Vee Jay boxes). Definitely, a predicament. -
A friend, from Ohio, wrote to let me know her favorite radio station is no more as of today. Twenty-three years of independent radio, the future of rock and roll, comes to a close. I suppose WOXY lasted as long as it could. Times change and things change. I wasn't into the genre of music played on the station, but I know, from listening to it with my friend, that the station had its own style of programming. The end of WOXY is another sign of the power of the corporations and the generic musical tastes of the consumer. Most people, to me, seem to like to hear the same generic music they are accustomed to. Nothing new or different from the mainstream. This is the radio station that was mentioned in the movie Rain Man. http://www.woxy.com

There was a time, about a year ago, when I wouldn't have considered spending money on the Venuti/Lang Mosaic box. I'd recently purchased the Bix/Tram and the Django boxes, and figured I had enough music from that era. Recently, however, I've been listening to Armstrong's Hot Fives/Sevens Columbia box, enjoying the hell out of it, and also have been in a guitar mood. Damn, the desire for the Venuti/Lang box sneaks up on me.

Morgan/Shorter and Chambers/Kelly Vee Jays
wesbed replied to DrJ's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
This is not supposed to be a political thread. I don't want to mention any specifics about politics here. But, after spending the last couple of days with my mind stuck in the political happenings of the day, I've returned, tonight, to my copy of the Morgan/Shorter Vee Jay Mosaic. I'm listening to the 'Here's Lee Morgan' release as I type these words. Man, it's nice to be reminded of the excellence of the Mosaic Vee Jay sets. I've had no alcohol this evening. Not a drop. Yet, my mind has been drugged, all the same, by this beautiful music (and the excellent remastering effort of Malcolm Addey). The Vee Jay sets are, as I've written before, an example of the best of Mosaic and not to be missed. Excellent sound and excellent playing by all involved. Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, Art Blakey, Lee Morgan, and Clifford Jordan on the tune I'm listening to now. Combined with Addey's remastering and Cuscuna's packaging. It doesn't get any better. This music reminds me of the pleasure & privilege of being alive. B) -
Congrats, Rachel. I hope you enjoy the Johnson and Jones Mosaics. I have a three day weekend, next weekend, starting on 5/21/04. I'm going to submit my order to Mosaic next Tuesday evening. The timing of my order should place the Mosaics on my doorstep on the afternoon of 5/21/04. I'll be enjoying the new Mosaics all weekend. Reading, listening, and appreciating. Maybe I'll get the most recent couple of Selects too. B)
