There is not two and half hours in either set. Here's the Discogs link I created for the 1963-1964 set: https://www.discogs.com/release/24945286-Ahmad-Jamal-Emerald-City-Nights-Live-At-The-Penthouse-1963-1964 The link for the 1965-1966 set: https://www.discogs.com/release/24945652-Ahmad-Jamal-Emerald-City-Nights-Live-At-The-Penthouse-1965-1966 -

One two CD set has ten tracks, the other one has nine. The final track of the second CD in both sets is faded out. -

Nice stuff, they both arrived recently. One can only imagine what Jim Wilkie's tape archive must be like from the days of the Penthouse broadcasts. -

A few months after Hot House editor Paul Blair died in late 2011, a memorial service was held at the jazz church in Manhattan, which I attended, since I had been a Hot House writer for a few years and a good friend of Paul's. I can't remember everyone who performed at the service, but Bill Mays, Scott Robinson and Bob Dorough were among the artists who played. Paul's widow had a video made and shared it with those of us who attended, I need to find it in my still packed boxes from our 2019 move. Pianist Cecilia Coleman, an artist whom Paul Blair championed, also performed with an ensemble.

Dave Brubeck had a listed landline phone, though he wasn't necessarily the one to answer it when he was off the road. He shared a story that likely happened some time in the 1960s, when a woman called to book him for a wedding reception and she obviously didn't know who he was, as she got his number from the musician's union. What was funny is that he didn't let on about his fame and he was going to be off the road at the time and considering playing it for scale on a lark, when the woman suddenly, shrieked, "Oh, my god, you are the DAVE BRUBECK, I'm so sorry that I bothered you," then she hung up.

Thanks for the feedback. I have several thousand LPs, many of which were not reissued on CD, or the CD is out of print and I didn't replace it. I am not really interested in dubbing entire albums to CD, at this point, I already have that ability, since I own two Tascam CD recorders (CD-RW900SL + CD-RW901MKII), one hooked up to the stereo components, the other sitting next to my iMac.

Since my radio station no longer has turntables and I don’t see burning CDRs as useful to produce my show, which USB turntables are worth exploring?

Also, 4 to 6 pm is a lot easier time to get an audience vs. 9 pm to 12 midnight. I used to be amused by the Arbitron (prior to Nielsen’s acquisition) ratings. One quarter my show had a 2000 AQH audience, year the breakdown stated 80% of it was outside the metro area, which seemed unlikely to me. My wife and I filled out surveys awhile back and it is hard to remember exactly when you listened and to what station and how long unless you write it down or add notes to your phone right then. You wonder how many surveys are filled out with best guesses.

Naylor's stunt was a bush league move that would have earned a pitch in the ribs during the next at bat in the 1960s. It was especially dumb since his team was still behind at the time. Mickey Mantle said that he always kept his head down as he circled the bases after hitting a home run because "he didn't want to show up the pitcher." I was well aware of the turnover, but my dislike of the Astros remains in place.

I can say that I have no interest in watching these two teams play. The Astros still have the stain of the sign-stealing camera scandal, while I've never liked the Phillies.

Jimmy Smith at the Organ - Budget LP on Wyncote

I got rid of both Yes albums that I owned before leaving New Orleans for grad school in 1976. The weakness of Jon Anderson’s word salad lyrics were too much for me. -

I have enjoy this one time meeting on LP, but the label never got around to reissuing it on CD.

Looking for an Album - Gary Smulyan?
Ken Dryden replied to Teasing the Korean's topic in Discography
I once saw Gary Smulyan three different times with different bands during one visit to NYC. We had a good laugh by our third encounter. -
In my early days in public radio, my show did great fundraising between 8-10 pm on a weeknight, but once I was moved to Sunday, either afternoon or evening, the numbers were dismal. Saturday night has the potential for fundraising with right programming, but we had too many talk shows as lead ins and things died after Car Talk. I am glad Mrs. TTK has a loyal, supportive audience. It would be great if more jazz listeners supported their station.

I can tell you that late night programs don’t vary that much in audience numbers, in my experience, while underwriting is a hard sell for that period of the day. Most stations sell drive time, a few specific shows with bigger audiences, then everything together in a random run of schedule that covers all day parts, with no guaranteed shows or time slots. I had 26 years of experience as development director for WUTC and many membership drives. We quit fundraising live on air after 8 pm on weekdays and skipped weekends as well, it wasn’t worth the effort.
