  1. Mike, I have both albums, but have not listened to them in years, if that tells you anything. I will try to dig them out and give them a spin.
  2. I use this method on used lp's also, but i use a brush made for combing a babys hair. It seems to be stiff enough to dislodge little particles of gunk in the grooves without scratching the vinyl. After cleaning, i used to give the record a spin on a old turntable at 78 rpm to get the deposits picked up. Now, i have a Nitty Gritty machine, so i just vac them dry. No cleaning system is going to take care of scratchs, but this method will do away with pops caused by particles of whatever being lodged in the grooves.
  3. Its neither here nor there, but some of this guys facts are not accurate. The marathon Miles session produced four albums, not six. There is a fifth one with that group, but not from those sessions. To my knowledge Joel Dorn never owned the Muse catolog. He was the front man for 32 Jazz, but not the owner. Columbia had Duke Ellington box sets back in the 60's, long before the Davis box. I would also take issue with Fantasy being the industry leader on issuing alternate takes and bonus tracks. I own probably 2/3 of their catolog and their stuff has the fewest when you compare them to the other major reissue labels. They have been getting a little better at it in the last couple of years. OK i got that off my chest.
  4. The 7"EP's ran at 33 1/3 speed. I think there were about 20 of them issued. They had one song to each side. The only one i remember being part 1 and part 2 was Jimmy Smith's The Sermon. The Three Sounds that is pictured above was the only one with four songs.
  5. The Jazz Crusaders At The Lighhouse- this one has not made it to cd yet for some unexplained reason. Full House-Wes Montgomery At The Jazz Workshop-Cannonball Adderley At The Lighthouse-Cannonball Adderley Nippon Soul-Cannonball Adderley Message From Birdland-Maynard Ferguson
  6. Looking at the my Verve box, it does not appear that he recorded it for them.
  7. etherbored, It was i who PM'd you about Sister Sadie. Thanks for checking that out for me. I guess the master tape is bad, and there may not be any safties for that album.
  8. I see that Water is bringing out Leo Wright' Soul Talk at the end of March. This was an Atlantic/Vortex issue with Gloria Coleman on organ, KB on guitar and Frankie Dunlop drums. I finally get to replace my poppy vinyl copy.
  9. I still have all my dads swing era 78's. Mostly big band stuff, Goodman,Basie,Krupa,Shaw,Harry James etc. Like Chuck, i drag them out once a year if that.
  10. Allen, Although i agree with you that we would like every reissue to be state of the art, i think we have to look at the real world. In terms of what jazz sales contributes to the bottom line of Rhino/Warner Bros,it would not suprise me that if Collectables complains to Rhino, they are just told to take it or leave it. I dont know the answer to this, but are there different price points for a licence that get you better masters? Maybe Nessa can comment on that. All in all im just happy to have alot of those old titles out.
  11. Before everyone starts bad mouthing Collectables again, i would suggest you read the copyright statement on the back of any of their cd issues. They DO NOT master or manufacture any of their product. That job is done by the special projects arm of whatever company owns the tapes. Collectables is just a marketing company. In the case of the Atlantic reissues, Rhino Entertainment masters and manufactures the product. They are the ones doing the half assed job on some of the Atlantic issues. To prove my point, Collectables not too long ago issued Hank Crawford's More Soul. This album had been issued on cd by 32 Jazz some years back. The 32 issue had a defect at the end of the last track, Sister Sadie. Guess what, the Collectables issue has the same exact defect, which leads me to believe that Rhino used the same master they did for 32 Jazz. If after all these years there is a problem with the master tape, the least Rhino could do was to ask 32 and Collectables to run a dsclaimer for that track. They did'nt in both cases. So lets stop picking on Collectables. Without them, how much of that Atlantic product do you think would be out on cd?
  12. Some of the tape for the delux editions came from reels that Trane had taken home after each session and never returned to Impulse. For these latest cd's, they were returned to Universal by Alice and Ravi. I think maybe Thiele had some also.
  13. Have a good one Mike. This means you only have about fifty more years to get the Tjader disco figured out.
  14. Both the Williams and Carroll dates are from 1951. Both sessions started life as 10" albums and were put together when the 12" lp came along. The 12" was issued in 1958. I have the album on a Koch cd. I will have to listen to the Williams side and see how the quality is. BTW both 10"ers and the 12" are listed in Umphred's Goldmines Price Guide To Jazz Albums.
  15. Geez, you think she would remember recording with a blind black guy with a couple flutes shoved up his nose. The girl you mention on the Braith album, was'nt that the name of the actress who played the daughter on the sit-com Maude?
  16. When they changed to gate fold covers Mainstream changed cover design and in some cases album titles of a number of their 56000 series. Among those that i remember off the top of my head were albums by Maynard Ferguson, Clark Terry, Morgana King and Terry/Brookmeyer.
  17. The Beatles album was a bit more offensive then Kevin makes it sound. Those are doctor coats the Fab Four are wearing and what they are holding are dolls that were made to look like dsmemembered babies. When Capitol recalled the album, we still had about 200 copies in the store. Being the good capitaists we were, we told Capitol that we had sold out. We then sold the lp "under the counter" for $30 a pop. Then,at first to make matters worse Capitol just put the new cover on over the old one. It did not take the kids long to figure out you could just steam the new cover off.
  18. From the Grove Dictionary Of Jazz: "Freedom. Record label founded by Alan Bates as a subsidiary of Black Lion; it was later aquired by Arista, and formed the basis for the catalogue of Arista-Freedom."
  19. I dont see why Natural Essence would not come out as a JRVG. It was issued as a TOCJ in 1997.
  20. It would be nice if Blue Note would remaster those Best Of The West 10"ers. I had them on a couple of Liberty/UA vinyl reissues from the 1970's and i noticed even then that the master tapes were starting to show their age. I would suspect those reissues are the source material that Lonehill used for their issue. In this case since the bootlegers already have inferior product (vinyl copies) out, i think putting out remastered product would put a kink in their sales. It seems to me that if Cuscuna gives up on the project, hes just letting the bootlegers win.
  21. The Muse date titled The Happy Ground is not the same date as the Jazzland/Riverside lp. The Muse date was recorded in 1989. There is also a Muse date called Moonchild which is again not the Jazzland date, but a session from 1991. I hope that clars up any confusion on Lytle album titles.
  22. Someone sent me a burn of the Lonehill Jazz Studio set. I cant believe the horrorible shape Vol 6 is in. I would be embarressed to send a person a lp burn in that kind of shape, and these assholes are charging money for this crap.Lucky for me i did not have to pay for these. Save your money for the Japanese issues.
  23. DMP, Your right,i had forgot about the lights. He would hit a big chord and boom the lighting would change.I think Johnny had his little light show before the Rock bands started using the effect. About that same time i caught Sun Ra at Slugs and he had this big globe light sitting on his electric piano. He used some sort of dimmer switch to control it.Pretty dramatic stuff in the 60's.
  24. There is also a nice Bobby Timmons OJC 2fer with Lytle on half of the cd. You also get as a bonus the Soul Man lp which is the one Timmons made with Wayne Shorter. The cd is called Workin' Out!
  25. Jimmy is listed as in the ensemble on the Audio Fidelity Quincy Jones Smakwater Jack cd, but has no solos. He is on organ on one track,Marylin Monroe, on the Robbie Krieger lp, which i own. He is on organ on four of the six tracks on Turrentine's Straight Ahead lp which i also have.
