  2. Brandon is correct, the actual time on Gravity Point is 5:10. The album jacket i had has the mistaken time of 6:10.

  4. Jim R, Swede is correct, In Europe did not come out in the US until the Landmark issue. It may have been sceduled for release here, but that was around the time that Riverside was on the ropes.
  5. The five Jazz West Coast volumes are compulations of Pacifc Jazz and World Pacific material. When they were first issued on lp, a number of the tracks were either alternate takes or unissued tracks. I think most of the material can be found as bonus tracks on the various cd's that Cuscuna has done for BN and Mosaic of the PJ material. There may still be a few gems on them that you cant get in any other form. PJ put out around fifteen to twenty compulations over their active years. I have most of them and they all have three or four tracks that are not on cd. A few that come to mind are are a couple of tracks with Harold Land paired with organist Jackie Davis, a track with Mastersounds pianist Richie Crabtree playing organ, a unissued track from the Pepper Adams Critic's Choice lp and some unissued Charlie Mariano/Jerry Dodgian. Also a number of the tracks that were on lp prior to the compulations have been pretty severely edited. My favorite one because of the great foul up on it is Rodgers And Hart Gems. One of the tracks is Chet Baker playing Isn't It Romantic. When you put that track on Chet is playing The Lamp Is Low, which is not even a R&H song. I dont think PJ ever corrected the mistake, so there are still some casual jazz listeners walking around thinking that The Lamp Is Low is Isn't It Romantic. Good old Pacific Jazz, they were the best.
  6. That Ernie Wilkins Almost Big Band Live! is a very nice date. Great rhythm section of Kenny Drew,Mads Vinding and Ed Thigpen with nice solo efforts by Tim Hagans, Sahib Shihab, Richard Boone and,oh hell everyone plays good on this one. I dont know if its on cd, i have it on vinyl, but it is well worth running down.
  7. Lord gives the date for vol 2 as circa October 1973. Vol 1 is given as July 7, 1973.
  8. Before he married my dad was a regular at all of the dance halls in Detroit, so he had a pretty big collection of swing band 78's. Stuff by Goodman, Basie, Dorsey Brothers, Artie Shaw,Harry James ect. I liked most of what he would play on the old phono-radio console that took up most of one wall, but would not go out of my way to ask him to play anything in particular. Around the time i was in Jr High i had one of the first battery powered portable radio's that weighed only a couple of tons. I used to take it to bed with me and see what far away stations i could pick up. One night i stumbled onto a station from Boston that was playing Jazz. I still remember the dj saying something about the next tune being a new one from Art Blakey recorded at Birdland in N Y. Then on came Split Kick. Well that turned my,at the time, little midwestern ass around. After hearing that tune, i was a boy on a mission. I had to have that album. It seemed like it took me forever to save the two fifty or three dollars that the 10" cost. Finally when i went to the record store to buy it, imagine my glee to find that there were TWO more volumes of that great music to get, which actually gave me life goals at age 14. Since then there has been alot of water under the bridge and a whole lot of jazz in my life, but that is how it started for me. I still have that 10" and would not part with it for any price.
  9. Jim, Hes not on Misty. The album jacket lists him being on Uh Oh, but if he was in the studio for that take, he was taking a nap. Or he was there wide awake, but his conga was not. Just another little Prestige mystery.
  10. Jim R, Just a small correction which is not your fault, but Ruppli's. I was able to borrow the LP of Misty (Moodsville 30) to record the the title tune and Uh Oh that are not on cd. Lockjaw did not layout, but plays on both tunes. Ruppli mistakenly does not list Jaws as being present on those tunes which were recorded at a dfferent session then the rest of the album, if his dates are correct.
  11. I have been thinking about it for awhile and this thread pushed me over the edge. I ordered a HHB 830 Burnit today. This will give me three burners,so i figure if i space them out throughout the house, i can be burning something no matter where i am.
  12. As you probably know that was the session where Sonny and Dex got so drunk Al Lion lost his temper and called off the date. I think he was upset because they were calling tunes that they had recorded for other labels.
  13. Now im thinking it was on record. At one of the movie sites they make reference to a Philips recording FDX286, which came out in 1963, which is the year the movie came out. Going to have to see if i can find that one.
  14. Well im with Chris on this one, i would like to know who this was released by. All of my books list only the Dizzy record on Philips as the soundtrack. I have no listing of Waldron releasing it, unless it was after 1969. I think we need Mike Fitzgerald on this one.
  15. The Lord discography does not list any alternates for the Cool World soundtrack. Also the band for that recording was Diz, James Moody, Kenny Barron, Chris White and Rudy Collins.
  16. Jim R, I have a 1999 BMG cd issue of Portrait and it DOES list Sweets as being in the trumpet section on four tunes. They are Saturian Sleigh Ride, The Line Backer, Play! Boy and A Geophysical Ear. He does not solo on any of the songs. I think Brownie is right that he is not listed on the RCA album because of contract problems.
  17. Not to mention that had Butler had Bix on the label, he would have turned him over to be produced by the Mizell brothers.
  18. Soul Stream, I caught Don in Detroit a few times when he was with Stitt back in the 60"s and i think a couple of times in Chicago. Once i think he was just doing a duo with Billy James. At the time i had kind of burned out on Jimmy and with those bop lines Don was playing, i thought he was about the baddest cat i had ever heard on the instrument. Depending on the night, Sonny would sometimes take a short solo and just kind of wonder off the stand. Don would just stretch out until Stitt returned and they would take it out or trade fours with Billy. I think the first time i saw them Weeden was with them on guitar, after that it was just the three of them. Anyway Don always played great and if Stitt felt like really playing, it was magic.
  19. Soul Stream, Like i said, we will have to disagree on that tune. In answer to your other queston, i have not bought a Joey side in years for the reason you state. Ive heard Jimmy do all of that stuff. On the other hand a couple years ago i was driving back to Lansing from Chicago and a PBS station played a tape of a set that was done at one of the many summer jazz festavals in in France. The group was Joey, guitarist Bella Leguri(sp?) and Elvin Jones. They blew me away. Joey did not play his stock Jimmy licks at all. I dont know if it was the effect Elvin had on players or what, but Joey really burned on that set. I guess my point is that i know these guys are very good players, but they don't get it every time out.
  20. Soul Stream I guess we are going to have to agree to somewhat disagree on this one. Where i agree with you is that this group should be heard live. Im sure i would love them live. As i said before all of these guys are wonderful players, but for me it just does not happen on the majority of this date. I do disagree with you on Mikes solo on One For Don. I own every record that Patterson ever made, both as a leader and a sideman and also saw him in person a number of times back in the day and all i hear in Mikes solo on that tune is a string of Don's licks not played very well. I like the line of the tune. It reminds me of some of the things Don recorded with Booker Ervin. As far as the other guys you mention using a vamp taken from someone else, i thought it was bullshit back then and i still do. I dont mind it so much in a club setting, but not on a recording. In the end thats what makes jazz great, we all hear it somewhat different.
  21. The two tracks with Gene Harris were recorded December 11&12, 1996. I dont know of a McDuff disco. on the net, but the bulk of his recordings were done for Prestige. You might try www.jazzdisco.org, they have a Prestige discography which will let you look up his dates. Most of the Prestige stuff is on cd through Fantasy. He also did a couple of albums for Blue Note and a few for Argo/Cadet. Hope this helps.
  22. I know we all have different tastes, but as organ dates go i find this to be pretty average. I listened to the disc last night and was underwhelmed with alot of it. So to be fair i listened to it again today. Same response. A couple of the things that put me off. On One For Don Mike plays a string of Patterson cripples on his solo, and lets face it he's no Don Patterson. The solo sounds like a young kid trying to emulate what he just heard on a record. On They Long To Be With You, lifting the vamp from Earlands More Today Then Yesterday is just bullshit IMO. If you want to play something like that, come up with your own vamp. Overall i just dont hear much inspiration here.Just four good players going through the motions on most of this. Pisces Soul moves along pretty nice as does You'll See. So have at me guys,i can take it.
  23. I think you would have a hard time selling Mosaic on the JJ's and the Shorty's since just about all of them can be had on Fresh Sounds.
  24. Just listened to the heads on both versions and they are two different takes. At first looking at the times i thought maybe the alternate was a editited version of the master since it is only 5:21, but no it is a different take. But there is no take number listed. Jim R the alternate is on the Adventures Of cd.
