I have not heard it in many a year, but there was an album he did for Capitol, which i think was called Out!, that has some of his comedy routines on it. The one i remember was a bit about "The Mideval Jazz Quartet". Pretty wacky stuff, but it made me chuckle. Im going to have to try and find that album again.

Dick Bock was the king of the bad edit. You can find some real glaring ones on many of the Jazz Crusaders albums. But he left us some great recordings, and after a number of listenings, the edits just become part of the songs to my ears.

You might want to check two later dates by Frank on Steeplechase. Remember Me from 1976 with Harold Mabern,Danny Moore,Howard Johnson,Leslie Atkinson and Michael Carvin. The second is What's Goin' On from 1977 with Moore,Mabern,Stafford James and Louis Hayes. I think they are both still in print. Of the two, i lean a lttle more toward Remember Me.

Cannonball Adderley
Bill Fenohr replied to Joe G's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Being an old dude, i saw Cannon a number of times. I think the first time when he was with Miles. Also anytime the sextet with Yusef played a gig in Detroit. Besides being one of the greatest alto players ever IMO he had a way of connecting with a audience that was remarkable. He made the evening just plain fun, which i think hurt him with alot of the "critics". He could work a room, and the people just loved him. Some of my favorite sides are Live At The Lighthouse, Nippon Soul and At The Jazz Workshop Revisited. Oh hell, you can't go wrong with any of his albums. -
Besides the Patterson/Ervin stuff which i think is some of the finest organ trio stuff ever recorded, i also love the Rusty Bryant vol 2 disc. The tune Fire Eater from the Bryant disc never fails to get my motor running.

Happenings was Hank's only Impulse date as a leader (what were he,Thiele and Oliver Nelson smokin' that day?), but he was a sideman on a number of nice Impulse dates. A few that come to mind are Milt Jackson's Statements,Ben Webster's See You At The Fair and Salt And Pepper by Stitt/Gonsalves. Im sure there were others that i am forgetting.

If i remember correctly besides all of his other accomplisments, Hank was the first AfroAmerican to be hired to a full time staff position by the major TV networks back in the day. CBS i think.

Cheer up guys, if EMI buys the Warner Brothers music group, you won't get any Atlantic reissues either.

J Larsen, Here's a hint. His initials are WY.

Whats amazing to me is that it is going to take them seven weeks to do what our host did in three days. Lets hear it for big corporations gang.

My only problem with this board is the fact that B3er lives only a few blocks from me, so if i act up i am probably the only member who will get his ass kicked IN PERSON by the moderator. So there will be no roller rink organ jokes from me.

Thanks Jim. Are you doing the Green Door anytime soon?

B3er, I just received a a message that was forwarded from the board, but my in box shows that i have not received any messages. Is there something that i did not activate in my profile that i need to do? Thanks Bill

Another thumbs up for Soul Connection. The version of The Coaster is great. Besides Big John and Grachan, Melvin Sparks is playing some nice stuff. Does anyone know anything about Grant Reed the tenor player on this date? He is new to me.

Now that i have migrated here, who do i talk to about getting my mule and one acre of land?
-
I don't know if its correct, but i have always pronounced it with the accent on the mell. Ive been pronouncing that way since the 60's, so it would be tough to change now.

B3er, Your dad probably caught Eddie back in the day as he used to play the Trop. three or four times a year. I can remember him coming in with Joe DiOrio(sp?) and Wilbur Campbell.

I can take the PJ vocals in small doses, but i cant sit through the whole album. The Riverside stuff was pretty weak IMO. Now as far as his trumpet playing i would recommend the three Prestige cd's that contain the three day session he did in Aug of 1965. Those sessions produced 5 or 6 albums which are now on the cd's On A Misty Night, Stairway To The Stars and Lonely Star. The band was Chet on Fluglehorn,George Coleman tenor, Kirk Lightsey piano, Herman Wright bass and Roy Brooks drums. Chet was dialed in on these sessions.

I have the lp he did with James Clay called Texas Tenors. Its a date led by drummer Paul Guerrero. Besides the fine tenor playing, Floyd Darling on piano cooks pretty good. I dont think this one has been on cd.

Youmustbe, funny you mention Frankie Valle. Back in the 60's he played a gig here in Lansing and after the show a local DJ brought him to a club which was strictly a jazz organ room. The DJ bugged the band to have Frankie sit in. It was pretty bad. He tried doing Sherry Baby, but none of the guys in the band knew the tune and they all had that pained expression on their faces. To his credit,Frankie knew he was not making it in that room, and to everyones great relief he sat down after one tune.

The first lp i can remember hearing Ronnie on was The Newport Youth Band back in the late 50's. I think he was only 15 or 16 years old. I think there were a couple other kids in that band that stayed in the business, but i dont remember who.Anybody out there have that lp, i would love to have a copy of that again. On the Bee Hive Burn Bergade lp the front line was Nick,Cecil and Ronnie.

Although im down with just about any Jimmy, i think my favorite is Crazy!Baby. Even though i have owned this one since the day it came out on vinyl back in the 60's, the groove on When Johhny Comes Marching Home still kills me.
