  1. Thanks for the correction Dan. Was that on of the Collector Choice reissues? If it was, i guess it did not register with me since i had the TOCJ and the extra track on that 4cd The Other Side Of The 4000 series.
  2. Les McCann-The Shampoo-Pacific Jazz
  3. It seems that with a couple of exceptions Blue Note is not too hot to put out anything with Les McCann involved. They certainly were not all great, but he made some decent lp's for PJ. And i dont think the Turrentine/McCann BN Thats Where Its At has ever been out on cd in the US. My copy is a TOCJ. I wonder if Les is on Cuscuna's shit list for some reason.
  4. I seem to remember the sound on the original lp's that i owned back then was not great compared to the Verve or Impulse lp's.When Jim said the 2fer sounds somewhat cloudy, i think that is accurate also for the originals. But i played the hell out of both of them.
  5. lp, Although Young is present on five of the six tracks, he only really solos on two songs. On the other four, Chambers is featured on piano with Larry playing a backup role on three, and Joe playng alone on the fourth. You have to remember that this was a Joe Chambers album. The title of the album is a bit misleading IMO.
  6. Other then the Gerald Wilson's the only other PJ date with Teddy aboard that comes to mind was the Jimmy Witherspoon live date.
  7. After looking at the Uptown disco some of the guys are putting together i pulled out a few that i have not listened to in awhile. One Of A Kind-Don Joseph. Al Cohn is his usual badass self here. To Tad With Love-Philly Joe Jones For The Moment-Barry Harris Trio Live date Claudio!-Claudio Roditi featuring Slide Hampton Hod O'Brien-Bits And Pieces
  8. The Sadi Combo was reissued on vinyl a few years ago. I just got a copy from Early Records a few weeks ago. You might check with Mr.Tanno. I also have the Bechet/Solal lp.Its amazing how well the two of them, coming from different generations, fit together on this date. A very enjoyable listen.
  9. The two Lytle albums i like alot are The Happy Ground and Blue Vibes which were both on Jazzland and Happy Ground was later reissued on Riverside. Im not sure if they have made it to cd yet. Ive mentioned this before, but he made regular stops at the local organ club here in Lansing with the trio, Milt Harris on organ and Peppy Hinnant on cans. He was a good ballad player and used the four mallet techique alot. On the blues tunes they played Milt Harris layed down such a solid rolling bottom, you could not sit still. I always looked forward to them coming to town for a week, and i would be at the club every night.
  10. Mike The Buster Williams Hump was registered with ASCAP if thats any help to you. Also it has a different publishing company then the Barron composition.
  11. Now that i see the songs on 8019, it is a combination of songs from Tjader Plays Mambo 3221 and Mambo With Tjader 3202 with the added track of Squeeze Me. I would guess they structured 8019 the way they did because that some of the tunes, the four that were orignally on EP for example, were not recorded in stereo. I dont own either of the OJC reissues of those two albums (shame on me). Are they in stereo or mono?
  12. I dug out some of my old Schwann catologs tonight to check for 8019. The oldest one i have is from Oct 1960 and it is listed as a stereo only release. Being that early in the stereo game, i do think that it probably was also issued in mono. Schwann made a number of entry errors in those days, and in many cases, never corrected them. So here is a case where i think the mono number never made it into the catolog. All of his other stereo lps listed, were also released in mono. I dont think in 1960 they had started putting tied over stereo cartridges in hi fi record players, which would allow you to play a stereo record on a mono player without tearing up the groove walls, not to mention not getting all the information to the speaker. So to put out a stereo only issue would have not made alot of sense then. Also in the one of the 1969 Schwann's it lists 8374 as Greatest Hits vol 2 and i would think that is correct. I guess we can only hope to run across an inside sleeve from that period that has the catolog numbers direct from Fantasy.
  13. MartyJazz, Lord gives the Ashby date as only sometime in 1984. The Magician by Garner is listed as October 30,1973. I have the Jerri Southern lp, but it does not give a recording date. About the only help i can be is that it was issued in 1958. Bill
  14. Mike, I dont know about the cd, but on the Joe Puma Reservoir lp track a1 is Lovely and a2 is My Shining Hour. I just played them to make sure there was not a typo on the jacket. The rest of the listing is correct.
  15. Mike, Maybe this solves the mystery. The 8019 was supposed to be released in 1962. After doing a little more digging i see that Latin For Dancers was issued in both nono(3374) and stereo(8374) in 1966. That kind of makes me think 8019 never came out. I was typing this while you posted the Gemm info. Are you sure they are the 8019 number?
  16. Mike, I dont know this for sure, but i remember seeing a note somewhere that 8019 may have never been released. Other then that i cant be of anymore help to you.
  17. There is no booklet for The Boss. This one as i remember was not a gate fold cover and had no liner notes. The front and back covers are reproduced on the cd as they were on the vinyl. If im wrong im sure someone will correct me.
  18. B3er, Eddie Baccus played the old Tropicana Club here in Lansing several times back in the day. Also seeing Lyman Woodard's name reminds me of sitting with his mother in a number of clubs when he was just starting out. She would go to every one of his gigs. She was a pretty hip lady and a tireless promoter of her sons music.
  19. Jim & Mike, Seeing that i respect both of your opinions i got Double Exposure out and just finished listening to it. Sorry guys but my opinion has not changed. The piano pieces could have just as easily been released on Windam Hill Records as a New Age album. Actually it probably would have sold more that way. The two pieces that feature Larry Young just remind me of bands like Emerson,Lake and Palmer, alot of energy, but not much happening. I guess we will have to agree to disagree on this one.
  20. Listened to the lp today. Im just guessing, but some of the trumpet work reminded me in tone and the way some of the notes were bent of Clark Terry. I also got the feeling that who ever was doing the Jelligan solos, Baritone was not his regular horn. Just sounded like he was unsure of himself.
  21. The reason you are seeing so many sealed copies is that some company reissued the lp on vinyl. I do have to say i am a fan of both Joe Chambers and Larry Young, but i have always been underwhelmed by this album.
  22. Bill Fenohr

    Bill Hardman

Jack,i second that on the three Muse albums.
  23. Jim, Im thinking these were NY guys seeing that the engineer was Morris Nola a.k.a. Tommy Nola of Nola Sound. And it looks like it was produced by Jack Tracy. I wonder if Morris Levy found the album funny? He must have since i dont remember Nola or Tracy getting bumped off.
  24. Here And Now-Frank Foster/ Richard Williams-Catalyst Live In Europe-Pepper Adams- Impro The Fats Sadi Combo-Vogue 10" Brownie, You were right, the Sadi is a very nice little date.
  25. George Wright At The Mighty Wurlitzer: Vol 1 Vol 2 Vol 3 Vol 4 Vol 5 Vol 6 And the DVD Just funin' you Soulstation.
