  1. Add me to the guilty ones as far as 'Off The Wall' is concerned. I thought it was a great album easily his best ever. Generally I think 70's pop and so called ' soul' music was a giant step backwards from the 60's, all that disco and strings crap. If the 60's was Sam & Dave, the 70's was Barry White.
  2. Loved ' The Grifters', the movie that is. haven't read the book. Currently at the end of Donna Leon ' Friends In High Places'.
  3. Glad to see things are ship shape again. I understand how you feel , I tend to lose sleep brooding over imagined problems too. Look on the bright side, i had to learn to use a pc in Japanese ! And you think you've got problems !
  4. This morning I listened to Woody Shaw Mosaic disc three and some Dionne Warwick. Also dug out an old Dusty Springfield gem called ' My Colouring Book ' followed by a few cuts from Marvin Gaye.
  5. I've liked him a long time. My faves Armed Forces Get Happy ! Imperial Bedroom My Aim Is True Blood & Chocolate The Sweetest Punch The comment about classic single being s...h...o...r...t is true. The other day I timed Gladys Knight 'Take Me In Your Arms And Love Me' 2 minutes 5 seconds. The Stax singles box Vol 1 shows average running times of 2.30. Short but sweet. The seventies ushered in the l...o...n..g singles and things have gone downhill since then !
  6. Thanks Hans, seems to have picked up now.
  7. Welcome back. The board seems to be running very slow. I've had considerable trouble accessing the different topics.
  8. I'm most interested in what Christopher Nolan has done with' Batman Begins'. Of course I'm dying to see Terence Malick's ' The New World' Imho almost ANYTHING would be better than ' Troy'which I thought was absolute tripe.
  9. This one is childishly simple but tastes great. Beat 3-4 eggs. Add salt, pepper,1/2 onion sliced very fine then roughly chopped, several (5-6 )chopped green chilly peppers, a handful of chopped fresh coriander. Fry omelette in usual way but cook well. Serve with ketchup in white bread rolls. Sounds like a joke but I had this for breakfast in The Indian Coffee House in New Delhi and promptly begged the recipe. There it was cooked in ghee, I use olive oil.
  10. For an easy and delicous tandoori chicken. In a bowl grate a couple of cloves of garlic and an inch long piece of ginger. Add half a carton of natural yoghurt, two or three tablespoons of pureed tomatoes, salt and three Indian mixes, Kitchen King, Chicken Masala mix, garam masala, one teaspoon of each, half a teaspoon of red pepper and a shot of vegetable oil. Chop up the chicken and marinate for two hours. Grill until brownish and squeeze lemon juice and serve.

  12. That's true about the sound quality of the Toshiba -EMI Bethlehem series in toto. They all sound absolutely great, in fact as I'm typing I'm listening to Teddy Charles from the series. Clear, crisp and with the wonderful warm ambience common to all the TOCJ series.
  13. Re Chris Connor. If I were you I'd get the three Bethlehem cds first. 1 Sings Lullabys Of Birdland 2 Chris 3 This Is Chris I'd then get the Atlantic sessions. The ones I have that I suggest are 4 Sings The George Gershwin Almanac Of Song- double cd set 5 Witchcraft 6 He Loves Me , He Loves Me Not 7 In Person 8 I Miss You So ' ' Warm Cool' 2 cd set on 32 Jazz is also great
  14. Here on the outer fringes far from the English speaking world I wasn't conversant with the term ' dsl' but that's what I have. We use the Japanese NTT Flets system touted to be the worlds fastest, as I speak the speed is running at 100.00 Mbps. That seems to be the norm here in Tokyo but it would appear that the rest of the world runs a little slower. Anyhow it's fast, very, very fast. I use a Sony VIAO desk top. ps we pay about $25.00 a month for unlimited use, how does that compare with you guys ?
  15. The most important factor is that you have to want to quit, Anything less than 100% commitment is going to end in failure. Stop dead, all attempts at cutting back, gradually reducing the numbers of cigarettes is a waste of time. Practical tips are 1 Drink plenty of water 2 Clean your teeth after every meal and snack, even if this means carrying toothbrush and paste around with you. 3 Don't eat sweets or chew gum. Anything that leaves a sweetish taste in you mouth sets off craving. You should aim at a sterile mouth. 4 No booze. That's the reason many fail. Alcohol sets off craving like nothing else. Strictly no alcohol. 5 Exercise and plenty of it. When I stopped after many, many failed attempts I suddenly had a compulsion to walk, run, do sit ups , any kind of physical activity seems to be of great help. I don't know why but in my case at least it really did help. 6 Be prepared for irritation, bad temper, moodiness and anger. It will last up to three weeks. You are a junkie and you are going to experience withdrawal misery. After three weeks all the physical symptoms will vanish but you will feel like smoking on and off for a year or two. Eventually the smell and sight of cigs will repel you. Good luck. Remember you must be 110% commited and failure is not an option.
  16. Here's the link, click on the article http://news.bbc.co.uk/
  17. I wasn't meaning to alter the thread. However as Ziyi, Li, Maggie and director Zhang Yimou are all so closely connected I hope it is not too out of place.
  18. No mention of Li Gong !!
  19. Letter From An Unknown Woman. Great film.
  20. Henning Mankell - Sidetracked
  21. I see. Mr Spock is a closet Tolkein freak. I've seen this before somewhere. Was it in ' Mindmeld' ? Can't remember.
  22. Something's wrong with the ' Jazz Goes to The Cold War ' playlist. It's a duplicate of the 'Spring ...' programme.
  23. http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/jazzlegends/ Listen to an hour long show with an interview of Jimmy.
