  3. Good to see 'Painted From Memory' getting a positive mention. It was never off my player for weeks after it's release. ' Armed Forces' is still my favourite by a nose, it is available here ,in Japan, with extra tracks, as are almost all the others. Almost Blue has eight additional tracks. I'll put the new one on my must hear list.

    Larry Young

Don't forget the two Prestige/New Jazz sets, Testifying and Young Blues recorded at Englewood by RVG. Into Somethin' is a must have though.
  5. The singles collection is not only great but is beautifully packaged , complete with a cut out Peggy Lee doll!
  6. Fascinating site. Someone has put a lot of imagination and work into this. Thumbs up chaps.
  7. Of the more recent new viewings, Spike Lee's ' 25th Hour' stood out . A very fine film.
  8. The 'Smiley Trilogy' is outstandingly good.Without resorting to hyperbole, the best spy novels ever written, period, The third book ' The Honourable Schoolboy', does not feature him in a central role, but it is still first class. Please follow these with LeCarre's other great book ,' The Perfect Spy'. Nothing he has written since can compare, he has floundered around looking for themes, but his greatest work was centered on the cold war.
  9. Alec Guinness is Smiley. it is regarded as among the greatest things ever seen on the BBC, and the supreme adaption of Le Carre to the screen. It has languished in the vaults for years but seems to have been a benefactor of the new Beeb policy of slowly opening the film vaults. Smileys People, also with Guinness , is scheduled for release on dvd soon ! My copy of TTSS is winging it's way to me as I write. I can't wait to watch it. I have The Untouchable, it's very good.
  10. At long last this treasure from the BBC is available on dvd. Check out Amazon.uk. The Beeb seems to be finally opening it's vaults, other lost gems like Tommy Cooper, Hancock and Morcombe & Wise are now available.
  11. I'll also give a big thumbs up to ' Monsoon Wedding', a real delight. I've been to India three times spending over a year there, and can think of few other films that capture the essence , humour, pathos and feeling of the place so well as this one. The music is fine too, with great use of colour and totally natural acting, everything seems very natural.
  12. Most of them are available here in Japan. If you needed any help getting them I'd be willing to help.
  13. I prefer ' Stop And Listen'. 'Willow Weep For Me ' is a classic. Sorry, I thought the Argo was pretty over rated.

    Stephen Scott

Roy Hargrove ' Parker's Mood' (Verve) is very good.
  15. It's great. Nothing more to say.
  16. Art Pepper - Those Kenton Days Lucky Thompson & Gigi Gryce - In Paris Shirley Scott -Hip Soul/Hip Twist Louis Armstrong Chronological Classics 1934-36 Arkadia Jazz All Stars-Thank You Duke !
  17. Beiderbecke,Trumbauer & Teagarden Mosaic #1 Pepper Adams -The Master Ella Fitzgerald - Lullabies Of Birdland Matthew Ship - Strata Dave Holland - Seeds Of Time Tierney Sutton - Something Cool Michael Kanan - Convergence
  18. Shit! Am I the only one who even tries to eat a 'healthy' breakfast ? Every day, without fail I eat the same thing- German muesli ( it being the cheapest ) bean milk natural yoghurt banana and any other fruit in season Italian roast coffee, giant size I guess I risk being branded a wimp/health freak.
  19. Well.I'll definitely get ' Yankee Doodle Dandy'. I wonder if WB have any plans to release ' White Heat' on DVD ?. I may trade in my ' Singin' ' for the new double set version. The extras alone make it sound very worthwhile. The jury is till out on ' Unforgiven', I'd like to hear a few more opinions before trading in the old DVD version .
  20. I have last years version and thought the transfer was superlative. Is it possible to improve on that? Has anyone seen the digitally remastered versions of The Unforgiven and Singin' In The Rain. As they are two of my favourite dvd, I'd love to know if it is worth shelling out for the new versions or stick with the old ones. Comments most welcome
  21. The Japanese sometimes parody themselves. There is a small block of flats round the corner from me called ( I swear) ' THE RABBIT HUTCH', blazoned in big letters on the entrance
  22. State of the Tenor is, of course. a Blue Note release. My mistake, sorry.
  23. All the BN's are great, but the two I most often play are both non BN: So Near , So Far and State Of The Tenor. Both are indespensible.

    June Christy

Mikeweil 'June's Got Rhythm' , is certainly available here, in Tokyo. If you want me to send you a copy just ask. I think it would be about $15.00 plus air mail. I'm a big fan of June Christy by the way, she's great. There are several other ' twof'r' cds available besides, the wonderful, 'The Song Is June'. ' Duets' is also out in a new 24 bit remaster but I don't know how much of an improvement it is over the original jewel box edition.
  25. That's a shame. I count myself lucky to have seen the Experience a couple of times on stage in small clubs around the time Hey Joe was making noises in Britain. To say they were sensational would be an understatement
