Herbie and Wayne played the reception. What a band!

Senior year of high-school, 1987, didn't even own a CD player then (wouldn't for 3-more years, though fortunately I had roommates in college that had them). Got this Jimi Hendrix disc for the content, which wasn't ever released on LP, at least not in the U.S. (far as I know). Had to have somebody tape it for me a month or two after I got it, before I could even just give it a listen.

Stanley Turrentine #4754/5000
Rooster_Ties replied to golfcrazy1984's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Pretty sure they don't send the sets out in exact numerical order. Have read discussions here and elsewhere to that effect. -
Been a while since I've heard this -- but FYI, Kenny Garrett plays TENOR exclusively on this entire date, if that's of interest to anyone (and that's a good thing). Excellent music, as I recall.

It's actually the CD I was referring to - both LP's on 1 CD released by MPS Germany in the late 90's I'm lucky enough to own that CD. Me too. Prime (and rare) Woody Shaw on the first date (including the first recorded version of "Zoltan", titled here as "Theme from Zoltan"), and Carmell Jones on the second. There are two or three modal groovers on the date with Shaw that are highly recommended. EDIT: to add that Larry Young plays piano on the session with Woody Shaw.

Wow! That's what I was looking for. Nathan Page is a particular favorite of mine (though he's fairly obscure).

The lines would be easy to Photoshop out (and I'm sure they have other methods of detecting counterfeits). I think the lines just remove the temptation from rank amateurs.

Pretty sure that all internet images of stamps (images released by the USPS) have the price marked out, so people can't easily scale the stamp and try to past a printout on an envelope and use it. Used to be the price was marked out, but "Forever" stamps no longer have a price printed on them -- so they struck out the "Forever" indicator instead. Strong hunch that's why. Edit: Here's some past examples...

Have you gotten down to Orlando and heard Sam Rivers yet? If not, time's a wastin'! Out of curiosity, where are your out-of-town gigs typically taking you? Any patterns, or pretty random?

About every fourth time I hear something (anything) about Florida in the news, I wonder how Paul's doin'. So, how's about an update!

Bill Evans Vanguard live '67 w/ Philly Joe
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Discography
That was my big draw. Seemed like more aggressive playing (overall, at least on the uptempo cuts) than I was otherwise used to hearing from Bill. These '67 live recordings with Philly seemed like my semi-ultimate "go-to" recordings of Bill Evans -- at least when last I heard them a few years ago. -
Bill Evans Vanguard live '67 w/ Philly Joe
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Discography
Ah yes, that's right. Was it ever a unified single release (3-discs, I'm guessing) in Japan, or (from the pics you posted), it looks like one double-disc, and one single. I guess the point is moot, as I would suspect it's long out of print. -
I used to own the Bill Evans Verve complete set (traded it for a couple hundred dollars towards some great vintage Danish Modern furniture a few years ago). Anyway, I've always been meaning to get the roughly 3-discs of live material from (I think) 1967, with Philly Joe as I recall (and if my Google-fu is accurate), from the Village Vanguard I believe. Some of this came from a regular album, but well more than half of the material from the rust-box was (then) previously unreleased. I seem to remember some reissue of just this Vanguard '67 material -- but can't seem to find anything definitive (or as comprehensive as what was on the rust-box). What's the most complete way to get this material (short of the rusty-option)? Would have burned a copy of just that material at the time, but I really dislike burns when legit (silver-disc) options are available.

The Genius of Miles Davis
Rooster_Ties replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
It was available for half that one day (or was it week?) earlier this month. There was much mention of this on the Steve Hoffman board. Combined with a 10% discount coupon-code, I think people were getting it for something like $330. -
WTF? Why was the "Elvis Thread" locked?
Rooster_Ties replied to Peter Johnson's topic in Forums Discussion
This is Jim's house, and he can run it anyway he chooses. We've got more freedom here than almost any board I've been on (save for the old BNBB when literally nobody was minding the store). Thank you, Jim, for hosting this space for all of us. -
Y U NO LIKE CAVEMEN? OK, the series was truly awful, but the ads were nearly always good. True story: the actor who played the 'mail' caveman in the commercials (not in the series) is the son of an incredibly nice elderly couple who we go to church with here in Kansas City. I understand from them that the make-up took as long to apply as it took to shoot the commercials. My favorite was this understated one. Cracked me up every time... 2006 - Geico commercial - Caveman at the airport

From that 4th Jazz Icons set, what is the line-up on both the Jimmy Smith disc (France '69), and also the Jimmy Smith segment on the bonus disc (Denmark '69). I'm curious who the guitar-players were. Also curious about the line-up on the Art Farmer disc. Thanks!

No idea if this is the answer, but there's a "Sam Rivers" who's the bassist of the band Limp Bizkit. Discovered this searching for "Sam Rivers" stuff on e-bay.

Is Szwed still at Yale? He was at the time (early 90's as I recall), when we spoke a few times while he was working on his Sun Ra biography. Edit: This Yale bio of him says he's at Columbia, which he apparently is. -
Steve Landesberg, "Dietrich" on Barney Miller
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
(Corrected to say it's the only the first three seasons that have come out on DVD.) Feel totally the same way. I'd probably buy a couple season's worth, if they included Landesberg.
