Recordings that were critical flashpoints
Rooster_Ties replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous Music
So what Wynton recording(s?) would best represent the schism that he has generated?? (And yes, I would count him as the primary architect of that schism -- or at least certainly its most influential proponent.) Perhaps the award winning "Blood on the Fields"?? (Or if not, what else then??) Have critics been particularly divided (or, rather, bitterly divided much?) about Wynton?? I mean, he's a Flashpoint in our world (meaning the various on-line circles we travel in) - for sure. But has that translated into much published critical writing on what I would term "our behalf"?? (if ya know what I mean ). I remember a piece on Slate, or maybe Salon, a few years ago -- that really tried to put Wynton's musical output in some sort of perspective -- and one that many of us here would agree with. OK, found it... Trumpeting Mediocrity - Was Wynton Marsalis ever that good? (Fred Kaplan. April 2004) Has there been much else?? -

Here's an obscure one that I've known about for years, but I never actually saw before Youtube. It was shot right here in Kansas City ( ), nearly 10 years ago (summer of 1997, as I recall). They had to shut down a couple MAJOR highways to do it (on a Sunday, probably), and closed off part of downtown KC too (not a difficult thing to do some weekends, actually, especially back then). I don't think the city officials had ANY idea what the resulting video was gonna look like when they gave it the OK. U2 - Last Night On Earth There was quite a local firestorm when the final product was seen locally.

I've heard this tune before (though it's rather obscure -- mostly because "Landing on Water" (1986) is not a universally beloved Neil Young album, to put it mildly), but I sure never knew there was a video... Neil Young - Touch the Night When you stumble on really obscure promo videos (on Youtube, or wherever), for otherwise well-known pop/rock stars/bands/acts -- post 'em here. Good, bad, or otherwise...

Recordings that were critical flashpoints
Rooster_Ties replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I believe you are referring to his experimental album Zero Tolerance For Silence, which was just a single disc. R_T has in mind The Sign of 4, a triple-CD set on Knitting Factory with Metheny, Derek Bailey, Paul Wertico & Gregg Bendian. Actually, I was probably thinking of both releases -- and confusing the two as being one in the same. -
pre-1970 versions of CHICK COREA tunes on NON-Chick leader dates
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Artists
Thanks for the link -- and I had actually done some searching around that same site earlier today (although no song-writing credits are given, drat!!) From that site... I did wonder if this was perhaps Chick's first ever recorded tune (from only his second ever recording appearance)... Sonny Stitt Septet Thad Jones (tp) Sonny Stitt (as) Chick Corea (p) Larry Gales (b) Carlos "Patato" Valdes (cga) Willie Bobo (tim) Osvaldo "Chihuahua" Martinez (per) NYC, June 11, 1963 Are You Listening Roost RLP 2253 Amigos - Little Red Suede Shoes - Ritmo Bobo - I Told You So - Chick - Senor Jones - Autumn Leaves - * Sonny Stitt Goes Latin (Roost RLP 2253) Edit: I did check the AMG, to no avail. (Yes, I know, I need a discography --- does it count at least a little that I did spring $100+ for the 2nd edition of the complete BN discography a few years ago?? -- but that doesn't even have composer credits, so I'm still left asking questions here.) -
pre-1970 versions of CHICK COREA tunes on NON-Chick leader dates

FYI, it looks like "La Fiesta" is from December of 1971 -- but that's close enough for inclusion in my book. -
pre-1970 versions of CHICK COREA tunes on NON-Chick leader dates
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Artists
Thanks Mike. The AMG wasn't much help. Doesn't appear there were any Chick tunes on Laws' first album (The Laws of Jazz), if the AMG review can be trusted. The review of Laws' second album (Flute By-Laws) sort of implies that there weren't any Chick tunes -- but the tracks aren't fully listed to be sure, and Laws' third album (Laws' Cause) isn't conclusive either. Anybody know these dates, and can you fill in the details?? -- are/were there any Chick tunes to be found?? Thanks!! None to be found on this Collectables two-fer of Laws' first two albums either (here), FWIW. -
pre-1970 versions of McCOY TYNER tunes on NON-McCoy leader dates
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Artists
Oh yeah -- forgot about that one. Are there really no other McCoy tunes on any other 60's BN albums (besides McCoy's own leader-dates, and Patton's "Man From Tanganyika") ???? -
Recordings that were critical flashpoints

Probably NOT what you're looking for (for the radio show, since this is much more recent), but how about... Song X?? Spy vs. Spy?? and isn't there some sort of noise-oriented Metheny disc from a few years back (memory is that it was a double CD, maybe even a triple?) -- I'm betting that didn't go over well with most critics, with a very few though that probably loved it. These, of course, are all examples of really noisy discs, that are obviously gonna cause great consternation for a number of critics (maybe even most of them). By the way, how were Andrew Hill's dates critically received at the time?? (For an example of something that isn't as noisy.) -
pre-1970 versions of HERBIE HANCOCK tunes on NON-Herbie leader dates
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Artists
I knew there was another one on BN that I was forgetting. From Jackie McLean's "Vertigo" (also with Byrd, and also very early in Herbie's career)... Yams Hancock 8:00 I almost never think of these Herbie tunes, normally, unless and until I pull out the date in question. -
pre-1970 versions of McCOY TYNER tunes on NON-McCoy leader dates
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Artists
I guess the answer is that as good as many of McCoy's leader-dates were, there were less actual McCoy penned tunes that really were strong enough to really achieve "quazi-standard" status. Come to think of it, I'm having a tough time thinking of very many remakes / covers of McCoy tunes (from any decade, actually). And most of McCoy's various "greatest hits" type releases are padded with two or three non-McCoy tunes too. (Yeah, that's cuz it's so tempting to put McCoy's versions of Contrane tunes on there, but that's not the only reason -- cuz there's a non-McCoy standard on one or two of those comps too.) -
Headline would be clearer to say "LEGAL Music downloads (i.e., for a fee) in downward trend". That's if I'm getting the gist of the article, which I only skimmed quite quickly.
-
Same kinda thing as the quite similar Chick and Herbie threads... And if there aren't any (or many) on McCoy sidemen dates (or McCoy tunes on other McCoy-less dates), why not?? (I sure can't think of any such tunes right off the top of my head, at least not like I could with Chick and Herbie.) (And don't worry, I'm not gonna start one of these for Andrew Hill. That'd be a one post thread -- "Rumproller"!! )

Crap. Need any?? I think we've probably got plenty to spare!!

Why yes he did. Good catch!! At least one, anyway... I just remembered Chick was on "Total Eclipse" -- and they did Chick's "Matrix". Was Chick on any other Hutcherson dates that I'm forgetting?? -
That's really a wonderful image. Some people I know would work in Photoshop for an hour tweeking things to get something like that (and not have it come out half as good either).
