  1. How about Chuck? No posts from him since Nov 21st.
  2. Ok - just one. Accent On The Blues One down, nine to go!!!
  3. Oh, I know. By (me) trying to take it all WAY too seriously, that just helps point out the absurdity of it all. But half seriously -- it is kinda fun to contemplate the relative meaning of Andrew Hill's "Point of Departure" being mentioned QUITE frequently in this thread, and ALSO quite a few times in the "overrated" thread. (And even I don't count POD as one my favorite Hill dates -- though I do really like it.)
  4. Yeah, that's the deal -- 25% off of "full retail" -- just begins to get down to the "real market value" of many releases.
  5. Guess that likely depends on who's doing the rating, which is most of the point. Or does the "wrong" title getting multiple votes in the Desert Island game -- just PROVE how overrated a title is. (well, to SOME people, anyway ). "depends on who's doing the rating" -- what does THAT mean??
  6. (in no particular order...) - Dark chocolate, and even darker chocolate. - Side One of Julian Priester's Love, Love. - The collective wisdom of this board. - My lovely and wonderful wife. - That bite in Woody Shaw's tone. - Singing Mahler's 8th -- in a chorus of 250, on stage with a symphony orchestra of nearly 140. - My two kitty-cats -- especially the one that licks the water off my ankles just after I get out of the shower most days. - My parents. - Seeing B&W movies on the big screen. - Cities, and architecture. - The collective wisdom of Jim Sangry. - The judicious way Jim Alfredson runs this board. (more later, perhaps)
  7. Sorry, I ain't making one. Couldn't. Don't want to either, but couldn't even if I did. Now, if the time comes when I really have to be exiled to adesert islan, we'll talk. But right now, I'm into jettisoning bullshit and expanding beauty, so this kind of list is not relevant to my current lifestyle. Sorry. You don't get off the hook that easily. Pick three -- just three titles you KNOW you couldn't live without. That leaves you with 7 more that you DON'T have to pick until you are actually faced with the question in real life. That leaves you with all the wiggle-room in the world, so you don't have to leave anything out. (I'm not even asking you to meet us half-way, just 30%.) I say this with all love - No. Not even ONE??? (Just one???)
  8. You do NOT want to hear it, trust me.
  9. For those still not getting the joke, here's Death Cab For Cutie - I'll Follow You Into The Dark. One man, one guitar -- recorded in freakin' MONO -- so it's not as if there's even a "duo" of channels to get the nomination for "Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal" (It is on an album by a group, and it is billed as the name of the group -- so technically it probably qualifies. Still pretty funny!! )
  10. Yeah, no shit. "My Humps" got a grammy nomination??? Didn't even notice that until you pointed it out. My brain couldn't get around that concept, even if it tried.

  12. Be mighty interesting to see how many of these "Desert Island" titles are also mentioned in the "overrated" thread. Seriously. "Fuchsia Swing Song" is one, "Point of Departure" is another. Bet there's at least three or four more, including a few that will likely get multiple votes in this "Desert Island" thread. Can we safely assume that any title mentioned 5 or more times in this thread ISN'T overrated?? And where's Sangry's post in this thread?? Would love to see that one. (Seriously. )
  13. (If you know the song, you'll understand...) Category 7 Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal (For established duos or groups, with vocals. Singles or Tracks only.) * My Humps The Black Eyed Peas Track from: Monkey Business [A&M Records] * I Will Follow You Into The Dark Death Cab For Cutie Track from: Plans [Atlantic Records] * Over My Head (Cable Car) The Fray Track from: How To Save A Life [Epic] * Is It Any Wonder? Keane Track from: Under The Iron Sea [interscope Records] * Stickwitu The Pussycat Dolls Track from: PCD [A&M Records]
  14. I hear ya. Been there, done that. Expect to do it again, maybe even yet tonight (I mean, "this morning" - 12:30am as I'm typing this), who knows?? DAMN that Youtube.
  15. Planning to pick this up sometime in the first half of '07.
  16. Yeah, yeah, I thought about it (really, I did!!) -- and I very nearly included "Natural Essense". But frankly, at this point, I've listened to that album so much already, I probably wouldn't need to have a copy with me to remember. I did almost include "The Jody Grind" specifically for some Tyrone, but I already had some Woody Shaw in there (on both my Hill choices), so I didn't need "Jody" for that. I also thought about including Larry Young's "Contrasts", but I already had Mothership on my list. Damn, I just checked -- and except for otherwise unreleased material (the Trainwreck, and a Jackie McLean date), those are the only three available BN dates with Tyrone. I knew there wasn't much, but I'd forgotten just how little there was. (I also didn't want to have a list that was like 3 or 4 Hills, and 2 or 3 Youngs.) This would be a lot easier if the limit was 20 -- I'll sure say that!!!
  17. Nice to see LOTS of Andrew Hill and Larry Young dates on quite a number of these lists. I suspect if we ran the same poll in other circles (AAJ or JC), such would not be the case.
  18. Pulled this one at the last second ... great record! Great record, and the one I've always professed to be my all-time favorite Joe Henderson date. BUT, I think I'm gonna update my list above, and change it to include INNER URGE instead. Those first three tunes -- Inner Urge, Isotope, and El Barrio -- are completely off the hook, some of THE best Joe on record. Damn, this really needs to be a "top-20" list.
  19. I've got a Kansas City question (for Spontoonie, or whomever else can answer it) Was/is the "Municipal Arena" where this was recorded... ...was/is this the same basketball arena that's located in the Kansas City Municipal Auditorium, the one built in 1936, meaning the same complex as the "Music Hall"?? (The entire city block between 13th and 14th streets, and Central and Wyandotte.) Municipal Auditorium - Kansas City, MO If not, what was (is?) -- and where was (is?) -- the "Municipal Arena" in KC?? (Every search on google for "Municipal Arena" "Kansas City" results in the "Municipal Auditorium Arena" pictured above. This thing seats OVER 10,000 people!!! (I've been in it a number of times, though never for a musical event. It's the rain-location for the Kansas City Symphony's special "outdoor" concerts, you know - the Memorial Day "feel-good" pops shows, and such (that are normally outside, in front of union station). Sound Quality in anything described as an "arena" in 1951 --- is not something that I'd have high hopes about. Still, no matter what the venue was -- it must have been a BIG crowd, to have booked any kind of live musical act into anything called an "arena". (Yeah, I know "arenas" back then are not the arenas of today. But still, in terms of sound quality issues, you're talkin' about a glorified, oversized gynasium, at best -- me thinks.
  20. Well, here's my working list -- which I may edit in the coming days -- in alpha order... Don Cherry - Complete Communion Joe Henderson - Mode For Joe -- nah, make that Inner Urge Andrew Hill - Passing Ships Andrew Hill - the last disc of the Hill BN Select (the one with Woody Shaw, Sam Rivers, etc...) Hank Mobley - Third Season Lee Morgan - Infinity John Patton - Boogaloo Sam Rivers - Fuscha Swing Song (or maybe Contours instead? ) Wayne Shorter - Etcetera Larry Young - Mothership I may regret a few of these choices (or, rather, a few things that I didn't pick), but that's certainly 10 solid dates that I could live with for quite a while. (And DAMN, this really is hard to limit this to just 10.)
  21. And along those lines, can you teach ears??? Without exception, THE best "free" or "free-leaning" jazz musicians I have known were and are EXCELLENT listeners -- always reacting to what else was going on around them. What they may lack in pure chops, or traditional skills -- their ability to listen, and interact organically with other similarly skilled musicians around them -- THAT'S what needs to be taught more. You can analyze the music to death, and/or play your ass off at the drop of a hat -- but if you can't make it work in a group context, it ain't shit. That takes EARS. ...or so I've heard.
  22. Actually, that is kinda a good question. What are old people who can't afford Caddies supposed to drive?? Come to think of it, over the last few years I've seen more than a few really "up there in age" people driving new (or “newer”) cars that really aren't meant (or marketed) for their age demographic (like, often Pontiacs, come to think of it). Older people (not just “retired”, but age 70 and up) who happen to really need to buy a new (or newer) car, who only want to consider American cars, who don't have a boatload of money to spend (or who are really frugal by nature), are pretty much limited to cheap, crap American cars meant for MUCH younger demographics. My father is a good case in point. He turns 80 next May ('07), drives a 13-year old Olds Cutlass (a white one, no less, so he perfectly fits the demographic of that car). When that thing finally gives out (the car, not my Dad!!), what the hell is he gonna buy to replace it?? Sure as hell not a Caddie, or a Lincoln. He’s WAY too cheap for that. He’s already done some thinking about this, a couple years back as I recall – he REALLY didn’t like any of the options out there that he was seeing. (Or am I forgetting some make and model out there (that obviously isn't being marketed towards me anyway) -- ???).
  23. Does it come with a "play-along" record/cd??
