  1. Two tracks from the Elvin Jones BN Mosaic. I certainly remember the first one (a piano-less date, the one with Lee Morgan!!). But I sure don't remember the second one -- is Chick on that one?? - I checked elsewhere online, and he sure is. (I obviously don't know my Elvin set as well as I thought I did.) Again, this is from the Mosaic (via AMG), not at home to check on the deails myself (at least not yet)... 14 Inner Space Corea 6:33 40 La Fiesta Corea 6:06 Haven't a clue what the album titles are for these two (I'll look 'em up later) -- I experience nearly all the Elvin box as just one big release, for the most part.
  2. Holy crap, really?? Any photoshop manipulation?? What's the story behind the image?? Can't believe that's an un-retouched cell-phone cam -- but stranger things have happened before. <-- for future reference, after such time as you have changed your Avatar. EDIT: Hey, the image I uploaded is BIGGER than the Avatar-sized image. Cool!! Didn't know that board saved Avatars in their native size -- I figured they were compressed down to 100x100 at the time they were saved. (So click on the version here in this post to see a bigger version of the same image.)
  3. OK, here's everything from the Miles 65-68 box (via the AMG). My memory is that all of these tunes were also recorded on Herbie leader dates (I'll confirm this later, when I get the chance). And I can't think of any Herbie tunes on any Miles albums prior to the 65-68 studio material (and I'm sure if there was one, it would jump to mind). 4 Little One Hancock 7:23 19 The Sorcerer Hancock 5:11 25 Madness Hancock 1:56 29 Madness Hancock 6:45 35 Riot Hancock 3:05 43 I Have a Dream Hancock 6:44 44 Speak Like a Child Hancock 2:28 The last two are rehearsal takes, not fully-realized studio recordings.
  4. Are there any Herbie tunes that he recorded with Miles, that Herbie DIDN'T also record himself (on one of Herbie's own leader dates)??? There weren't any Herbie tunes in the Miles book before Wayne started -- right?? (That's my memory of it.)
  5. 37 Requiem Hancock from one of the Byrd/Adams BN dates (via AMG, looking up the Mosaic)
  6. Inspired by the same thread I started earlier about Chick Corea. Similar ground-rules (only dates from the 60's), but with a couple limitations... ONLY DATES WITH HERBIE ACTUALLY ON THE DATE. There's a TON of Herbie covers from the 60's, and that's a whole 'nother can of worms I don't want to get into here. And let's only worry about Herbie tunes recorded with/by Miles that Herbie DIDN'T record himself on one of his own leader dates. (In other words, only Herbie tunes exclusive to the Miles catalog -- are there any??) Seems like there's about three or four Herbie tunes on BN that I always forget about until I actually pick up the date in question. Tunes that weren't remakes (earlier or later) of tunes Herbie made himself (on his own leader-dates). There's one or two on some early Donald Byrd albums. Gotta be some others I'm forgetting.
  7. Oh yeah, almost forgot about that one. I've got a couple versions myself, but it's easy to overlook (since it isn't credited properly on any of the grey-market issues of this material. Thanks for the reminder!!
  8. OK, from Donald Byrd's "The Creeper" (according to the AMG)... 13 Samba Yantra Corea 9:35 17 Chico-San Corea 6:45
  9. Here are the tracks from the Blue Mitchell Mosaic (via the AMG). I'll have to look up what albums they're from later... 11 Chick's Tune Corea 9:37 13 Perception Corea, Mitchell 5:41 28 Tones for Joan's Bones Corea 6:38 29 Straight up and Down Corea 6:39
  10. At work at the moment (away from my stash), or I'd be able to post a MUCH better list to get us started. Just off the top of my head, there's... -- "Straight up Straight Down" from "Introducing Duke Pearson's Big Band" - is that the only Chick tune on this date? (and if I remember correctly, Chick wasn't on this date - was he?) -- Two or three (or four?) tunes from two (or three?) Blue Mitchell BN albums (all with Chick, I'm pretty sure) -- One (or two?) tunes from Donald Byrd's "The Creeper" (with Chick). Let's build a full list. Anything NOT on BN?? Any withOUT Chick on the date?? What was the first (earliest) cover of a Chick tune that didn't have Chick on the date?? Primarily looking for versions of these tunes recorded in the 1960's. (Or at least tunes Chick clearly wrote in the 60's -- but maybe were recorded on non-Chick leader-dates in the early 70's.) PS: I'll edit this first post as titles are added to the thread (and as I'm able to check my own collection at home tonight). I always seem to have thread-topic ideas when I'm away from my resources to start them properly.
  11. Billy Harper's first Strata East date?? (LP title = Capra Black, as best I remember - at work at the moment.) Everything I seem to be trying to think of is post-1970. "Introducing Duke Pearson's Big Band" and also Pearson's "Now Hear This!" maybe?? (Certainly the Chick tune 'Straight up and Down' from "Introducing..." would qualify.) What I'd be REALLY interested are in any titles for this thread from the 50's and 60's. Like what was the first "hard bop big band" record?? EXCELLENT thread topic!!
  12. Hadn't ever seen the cover - so I had to look it up... (Or maybe it's buried in the "sexy album covers" thread!! )
  13. The others should just sue the "maroon" for the 'lost' winnings (the 27m euros). Problem solved!!!
  14. And don't forget Tolliver's earlier "Music Inc + Big Band" date. Also, would any of the Gerald Wilson Mosaic qualify?? First thing I thought of, but I'm not sure how "hard bop" people here would consider it to be.
  15. I think all you guys with the barrels are just full of hot air.
  16. I may be remembering completely wrong, but I could swear I've heard somewhere about some systems allowing you to download voice-mail as mp3's through your e-mail. (Though come to think of it now, that may be on my wife's voice-mail system where she works.)
  17. I perfer using Brilliant Circles myself, actually. (Although I swear I never thought I'd bring THAT up in a conversation about GOOD sound quality. )
  18. OK, this (cover above) is the version of this material that I own -- a CD from 1990. Had it for 8 or 10 years, probably, maybe 12. I've got listings of all the sidemen from the liners, but when the hell were the three suites on this disc recorded?? Not ONE mention, anywhere in the whole liners, of when any of this material was recorded -- not even the decade. I'm assuming 50's, maybe '57?? -- just a wild guess. If anybody can put recording dates to these, I'd me mighty thankful. I'm talkin' Ellington's versions of... The Nutcracker Grieg: Pier Gynt Suites Nos 1 & 2 Ellington-Strayhorn: Suite Thursday How the hell can you release a version of this material (the only version available now, far as I know), and not say one word in the liners about when it was recorded?? The lack of VERY specific recording dates isn't so much a problem, as not even having even just the year mentioned (which does bug me, obviously). Is this the best CD version of Ellington's Nutcracker to own?? (Thanks, sorry for the rant - that's bugged me for years.)
  19. So, can (or do) big bands rent parts?? -- much the way orchestras rent music for performance purposes.
  20. I was wondering the same question!!
  21. Count me as a fan too. One of my favorite holiday jazz recordings, by far!! Now when I hear the traditional version, I almost always think of the Ellington/Strayhorn version in my head.
  22. Alban Berg's two major works for String Quartet -- the Op. 3 quartet (which is unnumbered), and the "Lyric Suite" (a.k.a. "Lyrische Suite") are both monsters!!! :rsmile: They're often coupled on the same disc -- get 'em both, if you can. I can reccomend specific recordings at some later point in the thread - I'm at work at the moment, unable to check the recordings I have at home.
  23. American pilots charged in Amazon jetliner crash
