  1. Jaki Byard - Sunshine of My Soul (Prestige, 1967) Any reviews from folks here?? Also looks like several of Jaki's trio recordings from the early 60's might well fit what I'm looking for (or nearly so). Any thoughts on them??
  2. Second Story Books is a great used book store, and well worth stopping into. They have some CD's too (if I remember right), and I'm pretty sure I bought half a dozen used jazz CD's and a couple classicals too -- last time I was there (probably three years ago). Totally hit or miss as far as what CD's they had, but it was above average from what I remember. Well worth a visit.
  3. Aren't there some Mosaic LP's from the Miles 65-68 box with the complete long version of "Circle in the Round" on one side on on LP?? From my CD's, that clocks in at 33:32. Wasn't there something I read in the Mosaic liner-notes about the sound quality being a tiny bit substandard on the LP version, because of the track length???
  4. That's nucking futs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  5. Up - I'm still curious about this Moran disc. If it's music that's not available elsewhere, it's definitely got my attention. Thanks, Erik Can't believe it's really anything different. Probably his debut album as a leader, would be my guess. (And they just left the title off.)
  6. Four sax players... Tyrone Washington Jimmy Woods Frank Mitchell Herbert Morgan
  7. Mal Waldron - Free at Last (ECM, 1969) [The very first ECM release too, I might add. B) ] Recorded in 1969, this was exactly the kind of thing I was looking for, when I started this thread in the first place. AMG only gives it 3 stars (Yanow), but it's close to a 5-star disc in my book. Very interesting, and I understand somewhat different than much of Mal's other work around that same time. I think I've listened to this disc about 6 or 8 times since I first got it, about two weeks ago. PS: Hey Bev - if you happen to see this post, I think this disc would be right up your alley. Heck, you might even already have it.
  8. No kidding!!! And, what's up with that plastic plane???
  9. Very few (if any) are disasters. They are a low-budget outfit, employing less than "name" artists, and lesser known orchestras (often non-union orchestras - with more room to negotiate favorable "recording" rates, etc...). I own about 150 Naxos discs, and I've never heard one that was substandard. Sure, in some cases there are better performances to be heard. But, frankly, in most cases - these are nearly as good as anything else out there, and are usually only half the price. Also, Naxos "American Composers" series is worth it's weight in gold (seriously). Most of the recordings are the only CD issue of those particular works, and in many cases - are world premier recordings. As far as specific titles to suggest --- all three volumes of Arthur Foote's Chamber Music are really wonderful. The works aren't very well known, but they should be (at least among chamber music fans). Foote was an American composer (from Boston) during the late 1800's and very early 1900's - and his music is a bit like Brahms, in a general sense. Vols 1 & 2, in particular, are really outstanding. (We were so taken with much of Foote's music, that my wife and I even had some of it performed (live) as a part of our wedding a couple years ago. We hired top-notch local string quartet.) Anyway, buy all the Naxos discs you care to, at least in my book.
  10. Went back, and forth, and back again... I shouldn't be buying much (pinching pennies, ya know), but I couldn't help but pick at least a couple new things. So, I finally settled on these three (with the double-discounted prices below)... Blakey: Drums Around The Corner [Limited] --- $10.83 McLean: Jackie's Bag [Remaster] --- $8.28 Hans Werner Henze: Composers Of Our Time [DVD] --- $18.69 I don't even own a DVD player yet, but me and the Mrs. (excuse me, Ms.!!), are planning to get one any day now. Now I'll have a good excuse to get one!! -- Rooster
  11. Missed the "who got voted off the Idol island" show tonight -- so who got the axe??? By the way, have you ever seen them wring more nonsense out of half-an-hour of television, than the "who got kicked off" Idol shows?? What a total waste of time. I mean, it's like 60 seconds to really say who's gone, but somehow they drag it out into 30 minutes!! Anyway, who got the boot??
  12. What Paul said!!!!
  13. See what I mean.
  14. Only $17.85 with the double discount (today, and today only) -- and disc #1 is definitely worth that much, all by itself. Get on it!!
  15. Word to the wise... When brousing Tower's "Blue Note" titles, don't limit yourself only to "In Stock" items (using the choices on the far left). If you only look at "In Stock" items, then "Low Stock" items aren't shown. FYI...
  16. Just spotted a "Babe's Blues - The Three Sounds" Conn, supposedly still in stock. $10.83 -- after the double discount. Not my cup of tea, but surely somebody here's lookin' for some Three Sounds. EDIT: added bold to the word "supposedly". Could just as easily be an inventory error.
  17. Maybe couw could fix her propeller-knees problem too!!!
  18. Yes. http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&uid=U...l=A39ktk6jxekrh 42 seconds of one of the tunes can be heard here: http://www.newjazz.com (scroll down a bit, look for the album cover). Fascinating!! If I find any other audio-clips, I'll update this post.
  19. Another vote for Nature Boy. Great disc!!
  20. I agree. I don't mind text sigs, but I find pic sigs distracting, especially large pics. Actually, that bugs me way more than the particular content of Evan's current sig.
  21. Gets me there in half the time!!! EDIT: And you'd better get the FUCK out of my way too!!!! -- when I've got this particular disc going, and it's cranked!!!
  22. I'm not so hot on Byron either, but occasionally (in the right context) he's great. But I heard him live a couple years ago, and he didn't do anything for me. Still, with Moran on for the date, I'm sure I'll at least be checking out any audio-clips I can find on-line, and I'm sure I'll probably take the plunge. Anything Moran is on is bound to be interesting.
  23. If for no other reason than the sake of people who might be looking at the board from their place of employment, I'd ditch it. It certainly doesn't offend me, but it's a tiny bit over the line, IMHO. BTW, I really like b3's take on this subject. He offers his opinion, but doesn't go throwing his weight around in the process. What a classy board mod!!
