Detailed semantical analysis aside, anybody wanna tell me if my examples above ( Hill / Taylor / Ra ) hold any water?? I'm not saying I'm "right" - but I'd be curious if anybody classifies them similarly to the way do, relative to the discussion at hand.

Friday night: Brahms Requiem Saturday night: Brahms Requiem Sunday afternoon: Brahms Requiem We damn near sang the whole thing twice last night, in the finally dress rehearsal with the orchestra. It was a good rehearsal, but I was shot after nearly 3 hours of gut-busting singing.

Not mutually exclusive, but somewhat distinct. The term "progressive" also fits in there too - probably closer to 'modern' than 'avant-garde' (at least in my view). As I understand the terms (and admittedly, my definitions are probably very personal), I'd say that I'm generally a BIG fan of modernism (music, visual arts, you name it) -- and a slightly more moderate fan of the avant-garde. In my world... Andrew Hill is closer to modernism. Cecil Taylor is closer to avant-garde. Sun Ra did both.

I know what you're talking about, Chuck -- but some of the material they play (and have arranged for string quartet), trumps and transcends their "heebie jeebie"-factor. For me, the Bill Evans disc is great, partly on the strength of the tunes themselves.

Oh yeah, Bill Evans. Been years since I've listened to either one -- but I remember the Bill Evans disc being stronger than the Ellington/Monk disc.

For what it is, thumbs-up (as I recall). I have both of the Kronos Quartet "jazz" discs (can't remember what composer the other one is the focus of), but as interesting string quartet albums, I remember finding them pretty good. Better than most at this sort of hybrid. Now whether this kind of thing "works" in the first place, is probably open to debate. I really like string quartets, so these were an interesting concept that turned out pretty good, to my ears. I've never gotten into the Turtle Island String Quartet, however (different group, I know). They've always left me a bit flat.

My wife and I only buy "100% juice" bottles of cranberry-grape juice and such. Unless it says "100% juice" -- it's probably got twice as many calories from the TON of fructose added. It costs a bit more for the "all-juice" kinds, but we've always felt it was well worth it. (We use a ton of coupons too, so that takes the sting off the price.) Tastes better too.

If you're into unique and one-of-a-kind museums, I've got one in NYC for you (sorta). It's not a museum, exactly, but it might as well be one... My wife and I were in NY about 5 or 6 years ago, and stumbled on an antique watch store, I think it was on Madison Ave, not more than 10 or maybe 15 blocks from the Guggenheim (don't remember which direction, though). I'm sure I could find the name of it, and the exact address -- if you had any interest. There's a vintage jewelry store here in Kansas City, and they usually have only about 20 to 30 really good vintage watches (wrist watches, we're talking here), at any one time. This store on Madison Ave. had something like 400+ vintage wrist-watches on display and for sale. Their prices were way over the top, and nothing I could ever afford, but it was fascinating just looking at all of them. Turns out that the owner of the store is the author of what I understand is THE definitive book on antique wrist-watches, which I later saw a copy of here in Kansas City. Of course, this sort of thing might not be of any interest to you. But the variety of wrist-watches from the entire 20th Century was staggering to see. Many, many striking models, especially those from the 30's and 40's. Here's a random sampling from the first site I found with Google.

Any word, Brandon, if the sound-samples are a feature that's coming soon to the "public" version of AMG??? I think that would be a HUGE plus, especially for being able to sample OOP material.

A few OOP BN titles, and OOP Mosaics too -- with audio-samples (of every track, in the case of the Sam Rivers)... I know, many of us already have these things in our collections. My point is that not everyone does, and these are all representive of the kinds of things that might have audio-samples in the AMG (at least in the future, since this backdoor thing might not last) ----> especially for those of us looking for OOP stuff on-line, on eBay, and half.com, and such. In the last hour, I've heard samples of half-a-dozen OOP titles I would have never bought without hearing first, but now I'm sure gonna keep my eyes out for them.

Not sure. The file extension appears to be ".asx". Plays on my Windows Medio Player just fine. On a side note -- there are audio-samples of EVERY track of the Mosaic Selects. Not just the three tracks they give you on the Mosaic site, but every track!!! B) B) B) Also, sound samples of every track on some of the regular Mosaics. The Elvin Jones set does have sound-samples for every track, the Stanley Turrentine doesn't. (Haven't checked any others yet.)
