  1. I think a little more respect towards Eastern religion is in order. I hear a lot of prejudice in your statement, and I am pretty sure you would not tolerate someone calling Christian religion "garbage". Coltrane's spiritual quest was one of deep sincerity, and it certainly gave him something - and a host of other people. Each man to his own beat of the drum. To call him blind borders on the arrogant. Both here, as well as back on the old BNBB – Shrdlu has consistently stated that his personal concepts of religion are the one and only 'true' way to view the world. The prejudice you hear in his statement is intended as such. (And to suggest anything otherwise, is to take on a loosing battle.)
  2. Seriously, do people here think there's a chance of both discounts being applied?? Both the "Blue Note" sale price, plus an additional 15% off?? That'd be one sweet deal. EDIT: I just looked at the e-mail I got about this more carefully, and perhaps YES -- the 15% would be applied on top of the Blue Note sale price (meaning we could maybe combine both offers). Here's part of the .gif I got in the e-mail today, as an attachment to this post...
  3. Oddly enough, the first thing I thought of when I heard the voice was Ringo Starr.
  4. darn... -_-
  5. Sun Ra Arkestra, in 1991.
  6. PG3: Ein Deutsches Album (AMG audio-clips) PG4: Deutsches Album (AMG audio-clips) AMG Review for PG4 follows, but it includes an explaination about both of PG's German albums... I really like 'em both. B)
  7. Here's that Spanish-language tribute to "The Police" that I just mentioned... Outlandos D'Americas: A Rock en Español Tribute to The Police Audio-samples at BN.com Not all of the tracks will change your life, but I really like about half of them, and the rest are not half bad. Check out track #7: Almas (Spirits in the Material World) B) The cover of "Walking on the Moon" takes the chorus the way of the Mariachi (although, unfortunately, the audio-clip doesn't have this part, drat). Fun disc -- well worth picking up, if you happen to find it used, or otherwise on sale.
  8. I've long had this idea that there's a whole world of rock/pop/alternative music out there (both literally and figuratively), that we here in the U.S. are never exposed to --- because the lyrics are not in English!!! My interest stems from a Tribute disc that I have, to the band "The Police" - recorded by all Latin American bands, and all the covers are in Spanish. And there's another disc of Spanish-language covers of tunes by "The Cure" too, that I've also been looking for (also by Latin-American rock/alternative bands). But what I'm REALLY looking for are interesting alternative/rock/pop albums that are sung in German!! (Or maybe some other guttural language – perhaps Russian?? Dutch might be interesting too. Oh gosh, what about Japanese??) I've already got both of Peter Gabriel's albums on CD, that he recorded in German (PG3 and PG4), and I really love them both. I mean, there's got to be bands out there that as just as good (or better!!) than Radiohead, or U2, or Matthew Sweet, or [take your pick] -- that just happen to sing in some non-English language. Or maybe some other cool "Tribute" type albums, with familiar tunes (that we all know in their regular English versions), except done in other languages. (An all German-language Police tribute would be cool, come to think of it.) Any suggestions??? Links with audio-clips would be much appreciated. Couw???
  9. The last three on disc #3, "The Happy Medium", "Peace" and "Old Mother Nature Calls", and three tracks on disc #4, "How Much Does Matter Relally Matter", "All" and "All in Time". The original records involved are "That Healin' Feelin' ", "Total Response", "All", and "Silver 'n Voices". Luca Just listened to some on-line audio-clips of these four tracks. Yikes!!!! Very scary, VERY scary!!!
  10. Don't know a thing about Wiik (never heard of him before now), but any Norwegian piano trio is probably something I'd be pretty interested in, I'd think. (EDIT: I just found an online 2-minute audio-clip of the first track, and 30-second clips of all the tracks on the CD -- and I would definitely like to buy this disc from you!!) EDIT: And if nobody else turns out to be interested in that "Free Fall / Furnace" disc, I'm kinda half interested in it too (from the audio-clips I found). But I'm a little on the fence about it too (meaning about "Furnace") -- so if anyone else is interested in it, please jump in. (But I'm totally sold on that Wiik Trio disc!!) PM's sent...
  11. Which tracks on this set have vocals??
  12. I've never heard any Horace with vocals. Anybody have any links to any sites with samples?? (Probably not, but it never hurts to ask.)
  13. Wouldn't some Bureau of Standards of some sort, be the one to decide such things???
  14. It's all about the music to me. I'd rather have a crappy "Applause" BN issue of a title I'm really interested in, than an early 90's TOCJ issue of a different title that I'm much less interested in. Another example... This is one of THE worst sounding discs ever. But it's one of my all-time favorite recordings with Woody Shaw, and a rare appearance by Tyrone Washington. IMHO, this is a "must have" recording, in my book. The sound absolutely stinks, but the music transcends the sound quality.
  15. The wife and I finished ours about a week ago (for the record - she did 'em -- she's a lot better with forms than I am). We usually wait until sometime around mid-March, but one year we actually got them done about a week after we got our W2's in the mail (probably the first week in February). Of course, that was back when we could both still file the EZ form (and before we were married), probably around 1998 or so.
  16. Zoot Suit required. B)
  17. I haven't ordered anything from Mosaic in about 2 years, maybe closer to 3. There's plenty I'm interested in, but for financial reasons -- I'm afraid I'm only going to be picking up things that go on their "going out-of-print soon" list. Fortunately I already had the Blue Mitchell, or I might have gotten that a few months ago. Right now, as far as in-print BN sets go --- I still need the Hank Mobley set, the Byrd/Adams set, and the relatively new Stanley Turrentine set. (I'm probably gonna pass on the Lou Donaldson. And I've already got all the other BN Mosaics that are in-print.) Plus I needs a bunch of Selects too, of course. Someday...
  18. By the way, this is probably my most accurate and restrained way of describing my interest in Hill's music.
  19. Probably the 1960's, followed by the 70's (although I am very selective about what I'll buy from the 70's -- it's just that I'm always looking for really interesting things from the 70's). Actually -- that brings up a good point. Even though the amount of jazz from the 70's that I buy is much lower than for some other decades -- my interest in finding particular kinds of recordings from the 70's is really quite high. SO, to specifically answer this thread two ways, here's my purchasing habits for the decades, by relative interest-factor, and also in terms of amount of music actually purchased... Interest factor ========= 1. 60's 2. 70's 3. 90's & 00's 4. 50's 5. 80's / 40's / and before Purchase frequency ============= 1. 60's 2. 50's 3. 90's & 00's 4. 70's 5. 80's / 40's / and before I could further break this out by half-decades too (but I won't), except to say that my interest in late 60's jazz is quite high, but my actually frequency of purchase for early 60's jazz is higher. It all has to do with how much is out there (on CD) that I haven't already gotten yet, vs. areas I haven't explored as much as I should.
  20. Strange direction, indeed. I fully admit to probably having gone past the point of over-enthusiasm about Hill, particularly back in the Summer, and Fall of 2003 (when this thread - and several more like it were started -- and when most of the posting activity in them occurred). I saw Hill perform live for the first time in July of 2003, and it was only in the few months before that, that I really started to feel like I was starting to 'get' the Hill Mosaic. Then I came into a bunch of unreleased live recordings of Hill in the Fall too - and that only fed the fire. And I started trying to pick up as much of his post BN material around that time too. These boards are a creative outlet for me, and sometimes I like to be a guy who's got that crazy look in his eye. Hopefully I'm not that guy about everything around here, but I certainly was about Hill about six months ago – guilty as charged. I'm not listening to Hill as fanatically as I did six months ago, and I’d appreciate Chuck's and impossible's participation in my old Andrew Hill threads, to the extent they feel they have something to contribute. I'm really not as crazy as I come across in these threads, and if anything - I'm probably guilty of trying to stir up some interest in an artist whose music I've come to enjoy more than I had previously ever expected to.
  21. Oh, and I'm fine with people not wanting to have much to do with Andrew Hill. I was like that for years myself too. I think I only listened to the Mosaic about 5 times during the first five years I owned it - because it just didn't speak to me. I originally bought it because of all the sidemen that were on it, nearly all of whom I really liked back in '95. And I think I've only gotten "Point of Departure" for about he last year or so. Hill ain't for everybody, that's for sure.
  22. Thought I would explain this further. It's not that I lost all respect for Lovano. It's just that my interest in him and his particular style of playing has fallen off quite a bit since the early 90's --- especially his leader-dates, but also (to a lesser extent) his sideman appearances too. And it's not that I don't think he's the real deal -- it's just that his tone and approach have just gotton less and less interesting to me. I'll still pick up OOP dates that he's on as a sideman - and I can't say he's ever totally wrecked a date for me. There's just something about his tone that makes me think he's chewing on his mouthpiece. Hard to explain really. There's just something about his timing, and use of space (not much use of space, actually) - that bugs me more and more, that's all. Didn't used to, but now I'm only just so interested in getting many more Lovano dates.
  23. Joe Lovano
