I've never heard any Horace with vocals. Anybody have any links to any sites with samples?? (Probably not, but it never hurts to ask.)

How does a tune become a standard?
Rooster_Ties replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Wouldn't some Bureau of Standards of some sort, be the one to decide such things??? -
It's all about the music to me. I'd rather have a crappy "Applause" BN issue of a title I'm really interested in, than an early 90's TOCJ issue of a different title that I'm much less interested in. Another example... This is one of THE worst sounding discs ever. But it's one of my all-time favorite recordings with Woody Shaw, and a rare appearance by Tyrone Washington. IMHO, this is a "must have" recording, in my book. The sound absolutely stinks, but the music transcends the sound quality.

The Taxman Is A Knockin'
Rooster_Ties replied to Soulstation1's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
The wife and I finished ours about a week ago (for the record - she did 'em -- she's a lot better with forms than I am). We usually wait until sometime around mid-March, but one year we actually got them done about a week after we got our W2's in the mail (probably the first week in February). Of course, that was back when we could both still file the EZ form (and before we were married), probably around 1998 or so. -

I haven't ordered anything from Mosaic in about 2 years, maybe closer to 3. There's plenty I'm interested in, but for financial reasons -- I'm afraid I'm only going to be picking up things that go on their "going out-of-print soon" list. Fortunately I already had the Blue Mitchell, or I might have gotten that a few months ago. Right now, as far as in-print BN sets go --- I still need the Hank Mobley set, the Byrd/Adams set, and the relatively new Stanley Turrentine set. (I'm probably gonna pass on the Lou Donaldson. And I've already got all the other BN Mosaics that are in-print.) Plus I needs a bunch of Selects too, of course. Someday...

The Best of Andrew Hill: The Blue Note Years
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Artists
By the way, this is probably my most accurate and restrained way of describing my interest in Hill's music. -
Which period and time do you buy most of your jazz
Rooster_Ties replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Probably the 1960's, followed by the 70's (although I am very selective about what I'll buy from the 70's -- it's just that I'm always looking for really interesting things from the 70's). Actually -- that brings up a good point. Even though the amount of jazz from the 70's that I buy is much lower than for some other decades -- my interest in finding particular kinds of recordings from the 70's is really quite high. SO, to specifically answer this thread two ways, here's my purchasing habits for the decades, by relative interest-factor, and also in terms of amount of music actually purchased... Interest factor ========= 1. 60's 2. 70's 3. 90's & 00's 4. 50's 5. 80's / 40's / and before Purchase frequency ============= 1. 60's 2. 50's 3. 90's & 00's 4. 70's 5. 80's / 40's / and before I could further break this out by half-decades too (but I won't), except to say that my interest in late 60's jazz is quite high, but my actually frequency of purchase for early 60's jazz is higher. It all has to do with how much is out there (on CD) that I haven't already gotten yet, vs. areas I haven't explored as much as I should. -
The Best of Andrew Hill: The Blue Note Years
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Artists
Strange direction, indeed. I fully admit to probably having gone past the point of over-enthusiasm about Hill, particularly back in the Summer, and Fall of 2003 (when this thread - and several more like it were started -- and when most of the posting activity in them occurred). I saw Hill perform live for the first time in July of 2003, and it was only in the few months before that, that I really started to feel like I was starting to 'get' the Hill Mosaic. Then I came into a bunch of unreleased live recordings of Hill in the Fall too - and that only fed the fire. And I started trying to pick up as much of his post BN material around that time too. These boards are a creative outlet for me, and sometimes I like to be a guy who's got that crazy look in his eye. Hopefully I'm not that guy about everything around here, but I certainly was about Hill about six months ago – guilty as charged. I'm not listening to Hill as fanatically as I did six months ago, and I’d appreciate Chuck's and impossible's participation in my old Andrew Hill threads, to the extent they feel they have something to contribute. I'm really not as crazy as I come across in these threads, and if anything - I'm probably guilty of trying to stir up some interest in an artist whose music I've come to enjoy more than I had previously ever expected to. -
Oh, and I'm fine with people not wanting to have much to do with Andrew Hill. I was like that for years myself too. I think I only listened to the Mosaic about 5 times during the first five years I owned it - because it just didn't speak to me. I originally bought it because of all the sidemen that were on it, nearly all of whom I really liked back in '95. And I think I've only gotten "Point of Departure" for about he last year or so. Hill ain't for everybody, that's for sure.

Thought I would explain this further. It's not that I lost all respect for Lovano. It's just that my interest in him and his particular style of playing has fallen off quite a bit since the early 90's --- especially his leader-dates, but also (to a lesser extent) his sideman appearances too. And it's not that I don't think he's the real deal -- it's just that his tone and approach have just gotton less and less interesting to me. I'll still pick up OOP dates that he's on as a sideman - and I can't say he's ever totally wrecked a date for me. There's just something about his tone that makes me think he's chewing on his mouthpiece. Hard to explain really. There's just something about his timing, and use of space (not much use of space, actually) - that bugs me more and more, that's all. Didn't used to, but now I'm only just so interested in getting many more Lovano dates.

The Best of Andrew Hill: The Blue Note Years
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Artists
Just bringing up another Andrew Hill thread from the past. I'm realizing that I never got to my picks for all of the 67-70 material. Anybody have any suggestions for what to pick from the "Lift Every Voice" sessions???? -
Hey, catesta, did you ever pick up "Passing Ships" by any chance??? I really do think you'd like this date, quite a bit - actually.

Favorite Andrew Hill 'BN' sidemen (with Hill)
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Artists
So, how about Grant Green??? And remind me -- what was the most progressive date that Grant Green ever played on??? I don't know the answer to this, off hand, and I'm about to answer it myself. (And I'm hoping the answer would inform our opinions about what Hill and Green might have sounded like together, particularly the Green of 63-65, and the Hill of 67-70.) Edit: Maybe Larry Young's Into Somethin' might be Green's most progressive date?? -

Couldn't believe who the last (bottom) two were last week. And the gal who got dropped -- the one with the pink hair -- I actually thought she wasn't half bad. The whole thing is just a big popularity contest, in some ways. Sure, talent plays a big part too -- but so do looks, and personality. But then that's the way the pop music world works. (Hell, that's mostly the way the whole vocal-music world works these days too, not just pop music.) My wife got me hooked near the end of the first season. We watched most of last season, and I'm afraid we're watching again this year. Unlike past seasons, there are some REAL duds in the top 12 this year. Only about 4 or 5 have any real talent, far as I can see. It's a fun show - and hell, it's probably one of the only "reality" shows that is, in any way, even moderately connected to "reality". (Either you can perform -- and perform LIVE -- or you get the boot!!) Great formula. The show deserves its success, every bit of it -- especially in a world with freaky concepts like this!!! American Idol and Pop Idol are basically G-rated family entertainment, with a little 'actual' drama (to be only 17 or even just 16!! - and singing live on television, week after week!!!). Pure genius.

You'll have to let us know what you think of this one... I did an A/B with my TOCJ CD and the JRVG didn't come out too good. Others have said it was fine. I traded in the JRVG. Absolutely criminal that this session hasn't been reissued here in the states yet. What a great album! I've got a hunch this will be a Conn within the next year or two. No inside info, just a hunch.

Rooster_Ties replied to SGUD missile's topic in Forums Discussion
Didn't Joe G mention one time playing in the pit for some wrenched musical based on the tunes of Barry Manilow -- and something like every other tune was in either 5 (or more) sharps, or 5 (or more) flats??? But I'm sure the Shekels were good!!!! How ratty was your tux, Joe?? Thanks for sharing all this stuff, Chuck. I only got through the first three, but I'll be back!!! B) -
Oh crap, did we ever get around to deciding on what those high standards were gonna be??? Something else to put on the to-do list... Welcome Mr. Tracy!!! Glad to have you join us.
