  1. Hey, that's a GREAT idea for what is really Connie's thread, Rooster!!! I have a funny hunch that Jack Wilson's "Easterly Winds" will be in the next round of Conns. It seems to always fetch a good (sometimes even CRAZY) price on eBay, when I see it come up as a TOCJ.
  2. I heard directly from Michael back in January (or maybe late December) that the Booker Ervin / Woody Shaw date from '68 (or was it '67?) would probably be a Conn, in the next batch (no discussion of when that might be). I'm talking about half of the Ervin two-LP release "Back from the Gig" (the half that wasn't actually lead by Horace Parlan). Anyone care to make any predictions about what might be in the next batch of Conns??? NOT what you want to be in the next batch... ...but what you THINK will be in the next batch??? What do we (collectively) think Michael is thinking???
  3. That's maybe the most Smilies Chuck's ever used in a single post, ever!! Chuck, I remember you saying back on the old BNBB about how you about never used Smileys (which got you in trouble for never using the 'winky' one - ). Two clicks later, and I was looking at page after page of your posts - and you were right, I could only find maybe one or two with any Smilies at all. You tryin' to make up for lost time, or somethin'??
  4. Same for me. They were static when I first brought up this thread, but I did a simple refresh of the page - and now they be rollin'.
  5. I'm about 99% sure that "Contours" has never been released on CD all by itself. The only time it's ever been on CD has been as part of the Mosaic. GREAT date too. Really wish this would come out as a Conn some time.
  6. Never did decide what I thought about it, and then found it was just simpler not to think anything about it.
  7. I finally gave up trying to fix things manually, and went with using the Win-ME "System Restore" function. This appears to have fixed things!! At least my screen resultion is back to 1152x864, and the colors are back to "High Color (16 bit)". So, all is well, it would seem. Appreciate everyone's advice and help. Thanks!!!!! Gosh I hate these evil machines sometimes.
  8. I tried changing the screen resolution to a higher (more dense) mode (meaning something higher than 640x400), but 640x400 is the only screen resolution that was available from among the choices. (Normally there are many more choices than that.) Also, 16 colors was the only choice available, where there usually is alot more choices, like 256, and probably much higher numbers than that. I will try resetting the monitor and/or video-drivers again now, best I can. I think it's coming up in 640x400 (and 16 colors), because it is defaulting to a more primitive set of "monitor/video-driver" settings, as if the computer lost it's video-driver, AND/OR if the monitor settings were "changed/deleted/what-ever" too/instead.
  9. Everything seems to be OK now, after running the Win-ME "System Restore" function. See below... =========== I was surfing links on fark.com, and clicked on a link buried in a thread. My virus-checker started going off and detecting what it thought were viruses in files at the site the link went too. Well, no big deal, I thought -- I get virus alerts when I surf, probably two or three times a month. I just have Norton try to delete the file, or quarentine it off, or whatever it recomends. Well, this time, after about another minute after my virus-checker went off -- my screen suddenly went to 640-400, and to 16 colors only display mode. And, for the life of me, I can't seem to figure out how to fix it. I've got a Dell monitor, P991 -- though I've only been able to find the Dell P990 in the list of all the available monitors that I can try to re-install. (So I picked that one). I also strongly suspect that my video-card is no longer installed correctly (software-wise), because when I boot up - it says something about an incompatibility between the display device, and the hardware that runs it (can't remember the exact message -- I'll write it down next time I reboot, and repost it (exactly) here). What a mess. I started running the virus checker, but it's so darn late (after 2am where I am), that I gave up on the virus checker running after about 10 minutes. Well, I guess maybe running the virus checker might be a good idea, so I'm going to start it now, and go to bed -- and check in the morning to see if it's found anything. Thought I'd go ahead and start a thread about this, since I'm sure this will be my #1 priority tomorrow -- since we're supposed to be finishing our taxes with TurboTax, hopefully this weekend!!! Any advice would be much appreciated. For what it's worth, I'm running Win-ME. Thanks again!!!!!! =========== Everything seems to be OK now, after running the Win-ME "System Restore" function. 10. box set, box set, box set. The Mosaic is amazing. Well, 90% of it is amazing. 10 albums on 5 CD's, and only 1/2 of one CD is anything less than 4 or 5 stars. Probably my favorite non-BN Mosaic, hands down.
  11. I've heard the same thing (or nearly the same thing) said about Greg Osby's more recent output (since about 1998 at least). The way you get to my heart is through my head, but that's not the case for everyone. (And there's no right or wrong answer.) But oddly enough, I do think there's something similar about Osby of late, and Stanko - at least in the style of their playing and soloing. (Maybe "style" isn't the right word: in the "effect" of their playing and soloing?? Is that any better??)
  12. Downbeat is what it is. It's not the worst thing ever, and it's a little better now, than I remember it being at various times in the last 20 years or so. I don't subscribe, and I only buy about two issues per year -- but I do pick the thing up at the newsstand most months, and spend a good 3-5 minutes with it. I usually buy the "critics poll" issue every year, and one other issue - based on the cover story (which always turns out to be less depth than I was looking for). I've thought about subscribing for years, but I never have. It's worth about $1 per issue to me, sometimes $2, or occasionally even $3 -- and their subscription rates are never close enough to that to make be pull the trigger. It's a mainstream jazz mag, and it doesn't pretend to be anything otherwise. I'm sure if they went in the directions I'd like to see them go, their readership would take a serious nosedive. Overall, I'd give them a letter grade of "B-". Occasionally they put out what I consider to be a "B+" issue. Several "C" or "C+" issues per year as well. Was a time several years ago when they were lucky to put out a "C-" issue, IMHO.
  13. Yup, heard that on NPR the other day. She's 25 now!!
  14. Monk's "Ask Me Now" -- as performed by Joe Henderson I have at least three, maybe four different versions that Joe plays on.
  15. Which organ you talkin' 'bout???
  16. I also posted this in the recent thread on Ron Jeremy... >>>> CLICK HERE <<<<
  17. I guess this is the best thread to post this in, so here goes... >> CLICK HERE <<
  18. Saw this in the "new releases" rack at our best local chain (Streetside). Didn't get all the RVG's in earlier in March (only got three), and probably didn't get all (or maybe not any!!) of this latest batch (I haven't even looked). BUT - they sure had 20 copies of some really alwful porn music on CD.
  19. How's Eddie's health these days?? Didn't he have cancer of the mouth, or tongue, or throat - or something like that?? How's he looking?? Last I saw (at least a couple years ago, maybe 3 or 4 even), he didn't look so good -- maybe from chemo treatments at the time?? What's the story??
  20. Shit, am I ever gonna date myself by revealing this... Julian Lennon - circa the summer of '85. (Or maybe it was '84??) Only Beatles tune he did was Daytripper, as his final encore. BUT, I followed that up shortly with Stevie Ray Vaughn in the winter of early '86. (Might have seen CSN before SRV, can't remember.) Can't remember what my first REAL jazz concert was, but I saw Sun Ra and the Arkestra in early 1991. That might have been one of the first, and certainly the first really big name I ever heard perform live.
  21. Very sorry to hear this, my friend. My own mother passed away just a couple months ago, also at a relatively young age (69). My thoughts are with you today, as they will be in coming days, most definitely. I wish you and your family the very best during this difficult time.
  22. That whole "Jackie 64-66" Mosaic is just killer. The dates with Tolliver and/or Lee Morgan are amazing, as are the trumpet-less dates too (like "Right Now"). Frankly those are probably my favorite of all of Jackie's BN output (the 64-66 output). And that's saying alot, since I also love the dates with Moncur and Hutch (the piano-less dates, three of them).
