Unissued Music You Would Like To See Released
Rooster_Ties replied to Ken Dryden's topic in Miscellaneous Music
The full Tyrone Washington unreleased BN session with Herbie and Jack D. (incl. all four alternates). I’m not holding my breath. -
I only saw Chick twice -- both times with the Kansas City Symphony (and never in a true jazz setting). First time performing his own rather nice Piano Concerto (and I might have even gone back to hear it again the next night, though I can't remember for sure -- I often did such things, whenever I could finagle another cheap or often FREE ticket the next night, by taking my ticket stub from the night before, and asking at the box office if there were any tickets (good seats) that might have been turned in by subscribers within just the last couple hours -- helped that I was a subscriber myself back then). And the second time was some Mozart piano concerto, which he improvised 2 or 3 cadenzas for (in decidedly anachronistic ways) -- which I remember liking as far as it goes -- but it was still Mozart (which I've never had much fondness for generally). Heard him at a pre-concert talk and Q&A before the piano concerto, iirc -- and had him autograph my booklet for Now He Sings... Did anyone else here catch Chick performing his own Piano Concerto live, by any chance? Quite a satisfying work, and I revisit the official release a fair bit, and my wife likes it a lot too! (She was with me both times we heard him with the KC Symphony.)

You mean, other than Joe Chambers himself? (Begging the question, since The Procrastinator was recorded?? -- or since The Procrastinator was released??) Which -- as I eluded to above -- actually PRE-DATED(!) the release of the original version on The Procrastinator... so much, that the version on New World didn't even have a title! -- as per the back cover below. Which begs another question: how did Joe come to know the tune (before it had ever even be released in 1978!), in order to cover it in 1976?

Got my email with the video link about an hour ago — so if anyone didn’t get theirs, check your spam folders. Starts at 7pm eastern (4pm Pacific). Might not be too late to register, I’m not sure. It seems the Max Roach episode is FIRST — so don’t be late!!

I’ve had goat 2-3 (maybe 4?) times since I’ve been here in DC. Separate BBQ and Indian restaurants both spring to mind, maybe Ethiopian too? Did you know that there are more Ethiopian restaurants here in DC than anywhere else in the entire US? — and more actual Ethiopians (and Eritreans*) in the greater DC metro — almost a quarter million!! — than anywhere else on the planet other than Ethiopia (and Eritrea*). *Eritrea and Ethiopia most decidedly are not the same — but are quite closely related, ethnically but not culturally (or is that culturally but not ethnically? — I forget). Anyway, don’t ever mix them up, as they’re not interchangeable (no matter how similar they are). Back to goat — I’ve tried it 5-6 times in my entire life, but only with mixed success. Sometimes ‘good’ — but just as often, not.

No goats in our neck of the city, I’m afraid.

Gack!! Hate the stuff. My wife loves the spicy variety, her daily juice with breakfast, and she has double on the weekends. I just can’t do it.

Just got a notice that The Bastards have vol 4 just in... https://www.dustygroove.com/item/971474

Watching this now, having DVR’d it in the wee hours last night here in DC from one of our PBS stations. Would that there were one of these docs for all of the top 15-20 “jazz cities” in the entire US!

I’m way out of my depth when it comes to Trane releases, but given the apparent sound quality of this upload, how hasn’t this been officially released? (Or has it? - which I could easily be unaware of.)

Not sure if this ‘@‘ reference will summon you (@Jim Alfredson) because of the space in your user ID (or if someone knows how else I can do that, please educate me). Jim, I just saw you’d posted a nice (lengthy) reply to a brand new board member in the Hammond zone — your first post in months, and one of very few in the last year. How ya doing, man? All things considered, I mean (the world has been in a tough place for a solid year, no less Michigan for damn sure). How’s your beautiful family? I’m sure I’m not alone in hoping you and everyone in your sphere are well. How’s about a little check-in? — so I can stop worrying about you, as I’ve occasionally done for the last 6 months or so (when first I realized we hadn’t heard much from you in ages). We’re here for you, man, if life’s been dealing’ a few rough hands. Hoping like the devil that all’s ok, or at least “pretty much ok”, as I said before, all things considered. Much love to you, and yours. — Tom

This is the only 2016 release I’m seeing on Discogs, fwiw. Is this the one you’re looking for? https://www.discogs.com/Joyce-Anos-80/release/9406018

What is the disc more specifically? — artist and title.

A Brief History of Children Sent Through the Mail

Haven’t read the articles yet, but I have seen various articles and reports over the years that the parts of the brain related to music (incl. singing) are somewhat distinct from those associated with both speech, and also memory. Meaning not only are speech and singing distinct (controlled by different parts), but musical memory is distinct from other kinds of memory. IIRC, this is sometimes evident in some Alzheimer’s patients, but also in some patients with very specific kinds of brain injuries otherwise. Music therapy seems to be a very positive thing among those who had significant musical skills and/or experiences in their earlier decades. I would imagine Tony’s musical gifts will be at least in some evidence (and benefit to him) for his remaining years.
