Joe Henderson Blue Note 1963-1966
Rooster_Ties replied to Brad's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I’ve got a Conn myself too, and already had had it for several years by the time that the US RVG would have come out (but never did). I semi-distinctly remember that they were releasing those US RVG’s in batches of 6 titles on release day (Tuesdays back then), but that one week there were only 5. But I think we already knew all about it before the actual day it didn’t appear, so it didn’t come as a surprise to any of us (that particular day). Such heady times!! -
Joe Henderson Blue Note 1963-1966

I’m pretty sure I read/heard that Pete La Roca personally put the kibosh on US the reissue at the time because the (then) ongoing Iraq war (given the title “Basra”) — but for whatever reason, the European version (with the dreaded copyright control) went forward — possibly it pre-dated the planned (but kiboshed) US version slightly? Surely someone here remembers and can confirm. -
DIW and JMT: Your favourite releases?
Rooster_Ties replied to Rabshakeh's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Yeah, that Pit Inn disc is probably the best sounding document of practically any Sun Ra live show I can think of. LOTTA great Michael Ray on that disc too — certainly THE very best live document of Ray that I can think of (imho), both in terms of sound, and performance quality. -
Would buy this on CD in a heartbeat, but I mostly refuse to buy new vinyl (at least I’ve successfully fought the urge in all cases, to date).

A ha, so then assuming the time-frame for Mal's non-leader stuff follows the same as you've outlined -- then you'll eventually get to "Soul Eyes". Which, off the top of my head, is one of his more interesting sideman appearances, if perhaps not primarily for Mal's performance, but for the overall quality of the performances of all the players (including Mal). https://www.discogs.com/Benny-Bailey-Sextett-Soul-Eyes-Jazz-Live-At-The-Domicile-Munich/master/600610

I see that I've weighed in on this thread before, but never followed up. This is the same one as the Dial LP I have, and as I said back in April 2019, the vinyl -- despite being a 33 & 1/3rd, its as thick (and heavy) as almost any 78. NOTE: The cover really is orange, despite the "gray and white"-looking cover depicted in the first (main) image in this Discogs listing... https://www.discogs.com/Arnold-Schoenberg-Kammersymphonie/release/6890731

My wife and I saw this last Sunday via a free preview ( streaming), via a link we from our local NPR affiliate, that we’re members of here in DC. Quite a powerful and good film. Two RRK tunes, yes, and the Ellington tune from Money Jungle... But what REALLY jumped out at me from the soundtrack while we watching the film, was not one, but TWO tunes from either of both of the Eddie Gale Blue Notes, specifically “The Rain” which I recognized almost instantly (and I’ve forgotten the other tune). We can both recommend the movie, pretty highly. The soundtrack also had a Horace Parlan tune too, from a Blue Note of his (I’ve forgotten the specifics; I think a trio tune).

Unissued Music You Would Like To See Released

The full Tyrone Washington unreleased BN session with Herbie and Jack D. (incl. all four alternates). I’m not holding my breath. -
I only saw Chick twice -- both times with the Kansas City Symphony (and never in a true jazz setting). First time performing his own rather nice Piano Concerto (and I might have even gone back to hear it again the next night, though I can't remember for sure -- I often did such things, whenever I could finagle another cheap or often FREE ticket the next night, by taking my ticket stub from the night before, and asking at the box office if there were any tickets (good seats) that might have been turned in by subscribers within just the last couple hours -- helped that I was a subscriber myself back then). And the second time was some Mozart piano concerto, which he improvised 2 or 3 cadenzas for (in decidedly anachronistic ways) -- which I remember liking as far as it goes -- but it was still Mozart (which I've never had much fondness for generally). Heard him at a pre-concert talk and Q&A before the piano concerto, iirc -- and had him autograph my booklet for Now He Sings... Did anyone else here catch Chick performing his own Piano Concerto live, by any chance? Quite a satisfying work, and I revisit the official release a fair bit, and my wife likes it a lot too! (She was with me both times we heard him with the KC Symphony.)

You mean, other than Joe Chambers himself? (Begging the question, since The Procrastinator was recorded?? -- or since The Procrastinator was released??) Which -- as I eluded to above -- actually PRE-DATED(!) the release of the original version on The Procrastinator... so much, that the version on New World didn't even have a title! -- as per the back cover below. Which begs another question: how did Joe come to know the tune (before it had ever even be released in 1978!), in order to cover it in 1976?

Got my email with the video link about an hour ago — so if anyone didn’t get theirs, check your spam folders. Starts at 7pm eastern (4pm Pacific). Might not be too late to register, I’m not sure. It seems the Max Roach episode is FIRST — so don’t be late!!

I’ve had goat 2-3 (maybe 4?) times since I’ve been here in DC. Separate BBQ and Indian restaurants both spring to mind, maybe Ethiopian too? Did you know that there are more Ethiopian restaurants here in DC than anywhere else in the entire US? — and more actual Ethiopians (and Eritreans*) in the greater DC metro — almost a quarter million!! — than anywhere else on the planet other than Ethiopia (and Eritrea*). *Eritrea and Ethiopia most decidedly are not the same — but are quite closely related, ethnically but not culturally (or is that culturally but not ethnically? — I forget). Anyway, don’t ever mix them up, as they’re not interchangeable (no matter how similar they are). Back to goat — I’ve tried it 5-6 times in my entire life, but only with mixed success. Sometimes ‘good’ — but just as often, not.

No goats in our neck of the city, I’m afraid.

Gack!! Hate the stuff. My wife loves the spicy variety, her daily juice with breakfast, and she has double on the weekends. I just can’t do it.

Watching this now, having DVR’d it in the wee hours last night here in DC from one of our PBS stations. Would that there were one of these docs for all of the top 15-20 “jazz cities” in the entire US!

I’m way out of my depth when it comes to Trane releases, but given the apparent sound quality of this upload, how hasn’t this been officially released? (Or has it? - which I could easily be unaware of.)
