I've been playing music by and with Louis Moholo non stop since Friday evening ... glad I got to hear him in person a few times (w/Irene, w/Four Blokes, w/Tippettses & MinAfric Orchestra ...). Thanks so much for sharing your story and thoughts and insights @ep1str0phy 🖤

Anyone venture a guess who plays the trumpet solo on "Equinox" von Vol. 7 (30 Sep 1979)? Can't all be Lester Robertson on trombone there. Vol. 8 (and again Vol. 11) has one Juana Nash listed, who has no other entries on Discogs. The trombone solo starts quite early, emerging out of the ensemble chants around 1:05 and runs to 3:20. Around 3:24 the second solo beings, off-mic and in the middle register, around 3:35 it might be a french horn, too, but not a trombone. Around the 4 minute mark it goes into higher areas, and around 4:15 it's quite clear it's a trumpet, and when i'ts finally really on-mic around 5:15, it's definitely clear we're hearing a trumpet. The solo wraps up around the 6 minute mark. Great track for sure, not bitching too much, but hey ... some of the volumes have decent liner notes and soloist identifications, others have neither. They could also have been a little bit more generous about which tracks were included on the original double album (and the expanded reissue from a few years back). Anyway, I've been making my way through these slowly (four Vols. remaining) and I definitely enjoy the ride! -- In #4 ("A Call for Truth") around 8:48, there's another trumpet solo, on mic now, and I like the playing! -- Also, in "Song for My Father", there's a male voice singing the lyrics ... who might that be? Sounds a bit shaky, so I'm guessing one of the instrumentalists? -
Just a quick note that I got a copy that plays through without any issues. Haven't tried ripping it as kind of a double check yet.

WXU sold ... and continued right away (150 CDs in 0.5 yrs or so it feels ... many of them pirated, but some really great things, too!), which made buyers stop from considering doing anything with the "old" catalogue. Rogue deal, somehow, I assume, as the buyer has one of the finest in things classical for 20+ years (alpha, Ricercar, Arcana etc pp). But of course I don't know the fine print...

They found some 50 more (45 still available): https://jazzinbritain1.bandcamp.com/album/antibes-62

Oh, that's cool! There's another series running ... by BYG or whomever remains (or inherited the remains of the stolen goods) of them, anyone knows how this all fits together? https://bygrecords.bandcamp.com/ All LP and CD it seems (I think when I checked last, a few weeks back, some were digital only) ... possibly nearer to the source (not that it matters much, some of the albums from August 1969 sessions sound quite bad in all issues, it seems, notably the Sunny Murray) and maybe with readable notes and including complete cover reproductions (too bad the Japanese CDs don't reproduce the entire inner part of the fold out covers). Also as I was considering upgrading the Dave Burrell, I noticed that in this case the Sunspots (manufactured by Abraxas, which also did ESP-Disk' reissues that I've always considered to be bootlegs) seems to be properly licensed.

Gave it a first spin yesterday and it's indeed very good. So far, "My Man's Gone Now" is my highlight ... Tubby at his most melodic, yet ferocious. And the groove gets quite funky here.

Oh no, very sorry to hear this! I exchanged some recordings and stuff with him a few years ago, and while it was sometimes a bit difficult to understand each other (language gap plus, I assume, multi-generational gap and somewhat of a cultural gap, too), he struck me as a kind person still curious about all things concerning the musicians he'd been following (in this case it was about Clarke/Boland and - mostly - their big band for him). I've got the KD disc on order and hope to receive a copy that will work alright ... will take a week or two until I know (some other early May releases in the same order, and me on vacation in early May, too).

Those are weird omissions indeed, thanks for pointing them out ... alas that French CD contains the same five tracks that were also part of the two previous Mel Powell CDs issued by Vanguard: https://www.discogs.com/release/14735742-Mel-Powell-The-Best-Things-In-Life https://www.discogs.com/release/14667510-Mel-Powell-Its-Been-So-Long So, two track missing ("My Last Millionaire" and "Soon"), it seems. While the Nat Pierce session is included in its entirety, it may be worth noting that the four tracks can also be found on a pretty good Fresh Sound compilation (quite certainly no match in sound quality): https://www.discogs.com/release/7238051-The-Swingin-Nat-Pierce-Band-Kansas-City-Memories

Since they're usually called "Complete ... Album Collection", a discogs search is quite useful ... but if anyone finds a list, let me know please! It's not completely reliable, so you may want to try a few similar searches (i.e. you need to replace "sony" w/rca to find the Peter Serkin box, though the entry has both RCA and Sony Classical listed as labels): https://www.discogs.com/search/?q=complete+album+collection+sony&type=all&genre_exact=Classical add a genre filter depending on if you're looking for Leonard Cohen, Earth Wind & Fire and Judas Priest or Monk, Weather Report and Blakey or Fritz Reiner, George Szell and Glenn Gould (that latest category is the one I'm most into with these ... and running such a search does two things: make me realize how I bought gazillions of discs in the past 15 years, and also hurts with regards to boxes I skipped, such as the Rudolf Serkin or the André Previn). As for the original question, I use Presto Music (never any issue with my credit card there, and they got lots of money from me) ... and sometimes JPC or evil A as well. They offer plenty of lists (I never use, unless when browsing through offers), including one on Sony: https://www.prestomusic.com/classical/labels/1333--sony

Stumbled over this old thread looking for a bit of info on Junko Mine as I'm considering to get the recent reissue of this album. https://www.cdjapan.co.jp/product/UVPR-60155 Sounds quite wonderful indeed:

Thanks a lot @RiRiIII - much appreciated! An order from CDJapan with some of the first batch (#14, 15, 17, 20, is waiting to be filled as #11 is out of stock ... I've got a previous - prob. bootleg - edition of that, so no sweat). Will consider more of these (I do have previous eition of all the Shepp, Cherry and AEoC).

Excellent, glad to hear most of us who ordered got their deliveries or are about to. Really happy things did turn up well! Just started listening with Vol. 1 again today, and while sound is rough there (first gig for the engineer and his equipment, the short notes state), the music is rough, too, and bubbling and intense, and sometimes pretty wild - and that is great to witness indeed! -
Yeah, mostly they're okay, but I've had some cost 30€ and turn up without 90° corners, cracks in covers (or even backs) etc. ... what started as a book dealer has generally gotten really bad at selling books (and good at supporting fascism) ... I've had plenty of new books ordered that were never delivered, i.e. the Ella Fitzgerald bio ... just gotten a new delivery estimate e-mail monthly for years, and when I canceled and created a new order for the paperback, the same thing started anew ... and of course the poor sobs in customer service have no clue. So I'm generally weary of them ... only thing that works reliably is major label music (classical CD box-sets mostly) that I pre-order or order right upon release ... if you wait a month or two, the same games started anew: monthly delivery estimate updates ... I've got a few order that have been running for two years, it'ss pathetic ... I just settled into accepting those items are oop, while amazon listed them as "in stock" for months and months - and sure I contacted customer service, see above ...) For the Ella book, currently they say 3 copies of the hardcover in stock, the paperback oop - I never got neither. https://www.amazon.de/Becoming-Ella-Fitzgerald-Transformed-American/dp/039324105X/ Sorry for the off topic excurse about lamentable american billionaires doing what they do best 🙃

They are there now! Anybody done a complete list of the reissues and care to share? Would be much appreciated!

Got my CDs today from SoundOhm – yowzah! They missed one and included another one twice, so I'll have to deal with a return – but compared with what we assumed the situation to be just a few weeks ago, that's pretty great! -
Ended up with both and the sound is quite similar (not to say almost identical) to these ears... not great, but very much okay. Guess I'll pass on the ezz-thetics, as I already have a reissue of "Three for Shepp" (Impulse Master Edition or whatever that was called, bought around 25 years ago, I guess.
