  1. Some beautiful Lyons here, indeed! Available from Cadence, that's where I just ordered mine.
  2. Hm, this is a bit weird ... if they want to do it right (and I'm sure they want!), why not postpone it, even if by some years (okay, the future isn't safe, I guess, but ...), and wait for the metal parts to become accessible again? Or does such stuff take decades with the LoC? I'm not sure I'll get this, it's one I'd rather jump for at the last moment, I guess, if at all ... the Ella sides, master takes only, are covered in the French Complete Masters box, for Webb I've got Chronos which probably can't complete with other releases soundwise, but still, I guess I've got 90% of the music and this isn't exactly a cheap set, so ... Seems, btw, to be 49 tracks taken from CDs (my browser gives 53 hits for "(CD)", four in the discography, the rest in the list of sources used - btw. those lists are a nice idea, play it open, I sure appreciate that! And I wonder how often in earlier sets they actually might have done the same, might have even announced it in the "producer's note", but it's somewhat hidden in there, the detailed list is a nice new addition, I've only seen it once in a box, I think .. is there on in the Hines? A friend got this and I was there when he opened it, don't have it myself yet.)
  3. Very moving indeed. And extremely sad news.
  4. Happy Birthday, Dan!
  5. Playing this for the first time right now ... "Red Snapper", that is - intriguing!
  6. okay, nothing to see here, move on folks
  7. Try and get the OOP Juan Calle disc, too - that one is great as well! And yeah, the Barry Sisters, too! But I guess that's not to everybody's liking ... there's a previous thread here:
  8. @sgcim: I love "Sweet Smell of Success", too! A small label called Reboot Stereophonic did a wonderful reissue of the Folk album - I know you saw the line-ups and stuff, but they've got the entire booklet up on their site - some good notes and all info there is avaiable (who did the fine cover painting, though?): http://idelsohnsociety.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/far_out_folk_songs_liner_notes.pdf There's also a sound sample (Store > Albums): http://www.rebootstereophonic.com
  9. Eleven thousand five hundred twenty one, right? I'd buy two if they'd pay me that!
  10. Why not just order from amazon.it? I'm aware you don't get free shipping liki I do, but are their rates ridiculous and much more so than those of marketplace vendors?
  11. Universal Europe does, but not the Brownie box
  12. Why use commas with numbers anyway ... we use apostrophes here, and all that's at the bottom means it goes to the next smaller unit 53'342.98 is fifty three thousand three hundred forty two point ninety eight. Sometimes all those anglo-saxons just don't make sense
  13. I'll definitely try and be there at Rote Fabrik! If you feel like having a chat before or after the concert, I'd sure be in! They haven't yet put the October concerts on their site, so I was not aware - great news!
  14. Sheesh, guys, you have me falling into a coma ... The box is a straight reissue of the Koyama-produced "Brownie" box that has all the EmArcy material. There's even a line on the huge backcover that says so. As for Universal, yes ... ex-Fantasy material is indeed distributed by Universal in Europe, for quite a while already (probably after Concord took over ... before that, we had those crazy sales when the previous licensee, ZYX sold off its remaining stock - the forum dinosaurs fondly remember that, I'm sure). These sets are legit ... and yes, the stuff's PD, so that probably explains why they're cheap - no payments going anywhere, as with all the pirates, but you get the music from the source (or well, closer to the source an in usually better fidelity than from the pirates). But then it is my understanding that the same applies to Japanese reissues which are so fondly treasured here, so no one dare and complain, m'kay? There are many italian boxes around and some of them have been discussed here ... Coltrane, Rollins, Miles Prestige, Monk, Baker Riverside, Ellington Carnegie Hall, Evans Riverside/Milestone ... they have the albums and nothing else. So the Rollins is smaller, only including leader dates (not sure about co-led/jam ones ... there's a much nicer German reissue of the big box with all of it and with a booklet, too, this one, while this is the Italian one - it says 12 discs there - but these will be 40min discs, one album per CD). I guess the cheapo Universal repackings (JATP, Pres - both very OOP) are from Universal Italy as well. Not sure there have been more of those, but the big Billie Holiday box has just been re-done, too (I mentioned it elsewhere): Mind you, I don't have any of these ... bought the Rollins once, since I'd mis-placed the booklet of the small-scale ZYX Complete Prestige Recordings set ... only to find the Rollins had no liners whatsoever, all very basic, a nice colourful booklet with a double-page on each album, cover on one side, info on the other ... all you really need to know, but none more ... after the missing booklet turned up in the empty house of my parents again, just before they started tearing down ... I presented the other box to a friend. @Lon: do go for the Konitz Milestone if you don't have it! The four albums pesent Lee in a variety of settings and they're all very good! The two later duos w/Alan Broadbent haven't grabbed me really yet (I'm not even sure I've heard the second one at all). I got all of them in single editions.
  15. Half an hour of disc seven to go ... as great as expected ... and "A Lonely Day in Selma, Alabama/Freedom" on the final disc is definitely a highlight!
  16. Coin Coin Chapter 2 is indeed to appear soon: http://cstrecords.com/cst098/
  17. Disc five - Mingus at Monterey
  18. r.i.p. Always enjoyed the Chico Hamilton Quintet with him - and a lot so! One of my first five or six Mosaics, and the original band with Collette and Katz was truly wonderful! http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/music/posts/la-et-ms-fred-katz-dies-20130909,0,1766008.story
  19. Very cool! Will try and grab one before it's gone (sometimes it's impossible to find the Wire here)
  20. Mingus, Concertgebouw now (discs 3 & 4)
  21. just got this ... spinning the Town Hall concert - great Jaki Byard opening ... very good to have all this new music (though I've got the Ulysse LPs and the Monterey 1964 double, as well as "Town Hall Concert" and the one Monterey 1965 track on the Malpaso compilation ... there's more new stuff than I'd have expected ... I really didn't even bother to look too closely since it was clear I'd get this box anyway!)
  22. Guess Neil Young would make a perfect politician then Just had a look, Qobuz won't sell this stuff to Switzerland ... guess this going digital thing is also a way to force people to buy at ridiculous prices again - iTunes over here is a hoot, I get a real CD form Italy, France or Germany for half the price (and can of course rip it to whatever format I chose ... or if ordering from Germany might even get it in the amazon MP3 player ... though this thread here is about the contrary of MP3).
  23. Thanks! Had the book here for a while (from the library) but didn't think of checking this session then.
  24. Congratulations, Daniel!
  25. So, re: Sonny Rollins at the Village Vanguard, it's Bailey on "A Night in Tunisia" (8:16) and "I've Got You Under My Skin" (10:03 - just one take on the 2CD set)? The RVG disc only has an asterisk (denoting the Bailey/La Roca line up) for the first, but the second isn't included in the Ware discography on www.jazzdiscography.com ... and aural evidence might support that, but honestly I'm not really sure I could tell, not being familiar with Bailey the bassist whatsoever, and Elvin is in his early stage here ... but then La Roca's groove on "Tunisia" is different (and I prefer it, actually) ... but there's Elvin's "lose" beat from note one on the second "Tunisia" and none of that on "Skin", so yeah, I guess it's Bailey/La Roca there, indeed? Was this ever discussed before? I hadn't listened to this one in a while and it just felt strange so I went looking it up in the Ware disco, and there ...
