  1. btw, this little bugger: is called Schnabeltier in german - but it would seem rather difficult to get hold of a real one
  2. My post in here was lost, it seems ... been playing Curson albums all day yesterday, including some Bill Barron and adding some Mingus later on (and continuing with them today). The Curson/Barron pair was very effective, "Tears for Dolphy" is excellent and "The New Thing and the Blue Thing" not too far behind! Also "Pop Wine" is mighty fine, they succeed in keeping things open and multi-directional yet it all flows together into a mighty groove. r.i.p. Ted Curson, thank you for all the fine music!
  3. I would only touch a box of Schnabel interpretations of Bealtes, T-Rex and Motörhead. Remember the days when you had shelves of cheapo CDs at gasoline station stops and everywhere, and they all had these notes: "recordings by original artists"? Here's a box of Schnabel for you:
  4. So that's the entire Bealtes, T-Rex and Motörhead catalogue interpreted by Pink Floyd?
  5. Wonderful box! I ordered it from site that looked rather dubious ... just had to try (there were no used copies around in today's very acceptable price range, see here) and was overjoyed when I got it! Loads of great stuff in there, and in good sound, too! As for the slipcases ... the only one of the VEE's that had one when I got it was the Hank Jones - and of course I kept it. The other early ones I got either used or from stores (dig that!) that tend to throw away the slipcases for whatever reason, as if can't decided what to do with them myself ... too bad, but never mind. The one "lacking" VEE I've got is the Stitt, which had the final page of the booklet cut off (looks like a manufacturing error or something) and instead a crappy b/w photocopy of it glued in ... I don't mind, really, but it's still weird ... but again, when I got it, it was impossible to find it at all - I remember getting it together with the Dizzy and at least one more in a local used shop).
  6. Good pre-order price on amazon.de: http://www.amazon.de/The-Complete-1946-1954-Paris-Byas/dp/B009S2U6HI/ As for sound, if Definitive is an indication, it will be rather crappy I guess (and likely even MP3 sourced, you never quite now until you've checked that ... not that I adhere to those who think it matters if crappy editions are MP3-based or not, crap is crap ... but I still don't like buying CDs in those cases). But I'll be happy to be proven wrong. However, as I have the two JiP discs, the Americans Swinging in Paris and the Vogue w/Beryl Booker & Mary Lou Williams, I guess I've got enough (I would though go for a well-done *complete* Byas set of that - or any other! - period)!
  7. I guess as far as legit goes, the 2CD set is still the most recent one. I don't have it at hand, but I think it's chronologically ordered and hence has the trio sides at the end.

  9. Okay, that's interesting (it never seemed to matter to me, but it's been a few years that I played any of the Solo Masterpieces). However, I was under the assumption that the recent cheapo boxes were just using whatever masterings were around already (without really knowing much about it, but they're Universal Europe products, licensed stuff by Concord's yurpeen distributor ... and they're so darn cheap, I'd be amazed to hear of any additional work having been done ... however I may be wrong and unaware of a proper reissue of this material?)
  10. If you're referring to the Ray Heindorf album that I mentioned above, that is one CD that I have. That's a 2CD set, just in case. Can't answer any of your other questions, but do you say that the old CD edition(s - I've got a German one, but using the same Fantasy mastering as the US edition, I think) of the "Solo Masterpieces" is in re-channelled stereo?
  11. Kind of, but more like übü roâ really père ubu is okay, too, though biologically I'm no one's père Huw Warren I've heard on the radio. That spelling makes more sense, I couldn't really see any other options how to pronounce it. But what's the proper spelling of Pugh then, Pew? That's not exactly a funny name ... Herr Kirchenbank, in German Exists in English, too: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blind_Pew Pantagruelian - how's that? In German, it doesn't exist at all, of course, but I assume you were just making fun anyway!

  13. ubu roi for you, with perfect French accent, d'accord? (that's übü)
  14. Yep, that's understood - and hence my question to Steve!
  15. Uhm, how then do you pronounce Hugh? When I say Hugh it sounds the same as as in brew, I think ... okay, maybe a tiny bit of different shading, but ... or are you making fun?
  16. Great thread - and most illuminating comments, ep1strophy! Garrison/Favors - very interesting, and makes lots of sense to me!
  17. Jim Pugh? as in "crew", "Fru", "Brew"?
  18. Thanks - sounds good enough!
  19. You're welcome, but remember that the internet was the friend who first introduced you (and me). So...the internet is still my friend, and now it's the friend of Cherry Red Records www.cherryred.co.uk as well! So it's a vinyl rip? Legit? I think last time I asked about Cherry Red being legit or not, I got beat up by those who seem to know better, but the 'teefski I got (my lone Cherry Red) definitely screams "PD!" in my face, so ... but then Syreeta's album isn't fifty years old yet, so ... what do I know, I will just get it.
  20. Mighty fine album ... I guess after all, the internet isn't my friend any longer in this case! Thanks for the heads up!
  21. Late again ... all the very best, Guy!
  22. Contrary to above opinions, I enjoy Ogdon a lot. But I guess best is Sofronitsky (to be found on Brilliant, I've got his 9CD set, but it can be found on a larger Russian pianists set, too). Also enjoyed some of Horowitz' playing, though with him I'm never quite sure what to think ... And the Ashkenazy set mentioned at the beginning I enjoy, too.
  23. The more you dive into serious discography like I do, the more you care for accuracy of information and the less for looks. Have you ever worked with an interrelational database like BRIAN? The advantages are so many that the looks become secondary. Precise information is what is important. Any funny layout corrupts the display of the data. Start working with BRIAN, and you will get the idea. Once you do it will save you lots of time. I('ve got to) work with similar programmes at work ... I can fully endorse your point of view, but still I find the layout of those discographies rather cumbersome, I'm afraid. But obviously they're a great source and the best around on the internets!
  24. Yes, but they still do look ugly ... someone ought to try and create a somewhat nicer design! Thanks for checking and reporting back! I guess that third version then is the only one I've actually got, forgot about it, too!
