The Jacquet was EMI (Aladdin/Philo), RCA, Savoy (who was the owner then?), Apollo (Delmark?) and there's an ARA session there, too, not sure where that belongs. But that was the exception to the rule ... and from what I've heard, while such negotiations were sometimes possible back then (1996), it got harder and harder to acquire licenses and reach agreements in general, for any label. Too many lawyers around, I guess ...

What live music are you going to see tonight?

Well, I've got tickets for Lateef, so I will be there - just hope he'll be there, too Next up, tomorrow night: Lee Konitz Another youngster ... seen him twice (once in 1996 with Swallow/Motian) and then in 2010 (I think) with the same Trio Minsarah that's announced for tomorrow night. Love Lee! -
So my assumption that they got the inherent message from all those labels taking advantage of the public domain thing was right ... they really should figure out some way to give the collectors access to the rarities, but as long as they have to think in sales/production figures, I doubt this will happen. They got the message like what, ten years too late? And yes, like Jim, I really enjoyed the Selects - too bad they didn't work out to be successful, for me personally, they were. I'm aware* that seven discs seems to be the format working best for Mosaic, but after all the smaller sets disappeared (there were plenty of them around, three or four disc boxes, when I started buying Mosaic product), I found it most welcome. They contain chunks of music that is often manageable more easily than large sets, and often they put out stuff that was pretty hard to find elsewhere (at least if, like me, you've been buying discs for around eighteen or so years out of continental yurp and without internext access or credit card for about the first five or so of these years). *) and yes, I'm aware now, shoot me next time I forget

The former is part of the sale (and looks interesting - I missed last year's sale, btw), the later is OOP, I think.

Upcoming Lucky Thompson Select tracklisting

Not sure they actually outright steal (copy from the Denons). I think they rather revert to vinyl or some other sources (those mysterious reels Pujol has amassed over the years, he mentioned them in some interview also discussed here) - or else his CDs would sound better. It is my understanding that remasterings are protected independently of when the music was recorded and of the music being in public domain already or not. And as it is my understanding that Pujol is kind of shady but likely just about on the legal side of the divide, I'm not expecting him to just copy the Denon (and Atlantic) CDs. -
Hey, I was in no way suggesting anyone lying here I am aware of the end of the Singles, but wasn't aware that the Selects were definitely ended, too.

bingo (alas, in bad sound quality )

Even if the label wasn't legit this does not make the recordings "unissued". Instances abound where the (legit or relatively legit) reissuers gleefully state "First official release ever" or "Released in authorized form for the first time" (or whatever) so why play hide and seek here? I know, but it seems common practice of majors to ignore such releases and label their first official releases as ... first ever releases. Not that I'd agree with that practice, was just asking ...
-
Is (was) VGM a legitimate label? Never thought it was - that may explain why they refer too it as unissued.

I've got that one ... actually I bought it for rather few tracks - but it's a nice package, and great to have it all in one place! Savoy failed to bring out the "Early" recordings pendant to their very good "Late Savoy" 2CD set, so I figured indeed I'd rather not wait for the Fresh Sound to go OOP, too! It also holds the fine lone Verve album (that was part of the Verve Elite Edition before). No more Selects ... is that definitive? I've heard about it, but never saw (or forgot if I did) any final statement or announcement, I think.

Hadn't noticed yet either ... those takes should have been in the great Pres/Basie Mosaic box! Someone really should collect those and the live session dubbed too short to fill a CD (who cares, I'd run for a 20 minute CD of unissued/unknown/unearthed Pres) and release it all!

Upcoming Lucky Thompson Select tracklisting

Too bad it will sound only half as good as the Savoy/Denons ... I am becoming more and more in favour of Fresh Sound (not of all those stealin' labels, I still despise the bootleggers making money of unauthorized live shows) as none of the legal owners seem to bother to do anything anymore, but still, too many of these Fresh Sounds sound okay (as opposed to good). Too bad, really. But this IS an attractive package. Let's just hope they won't repeat the mistake Proper made in its Bags 4CD set! Good to see the trio track ("What's New") is there, too! -
It's really too bad! I've got some of it as zeros and ones, and I am keeping my eyes open for used vinyl ... but they would make a great package, maybe even a Mosaic (a Select for the studio material? would be too bad about the terrific Pep's material - possibly my very favorite Lateef! - but still a great set!), but then they probably won't get access, either.

I don't choose my avatars, they choose me.

Way too hard for anyone at Universal to bother, I'm afraid. But I'd love to see the missing ones on CD!

What live music are you going to see tonight?

Anyone else planning to attend the Yusef Lateef/Archie Shepp concert in Ludwigshafen on November 10? Got tickets for Niko and myself - at the very end of the hall, on the balcony, I'm afraid ... some better seats turned up as free that were all purportedly sold when I booked, but anyway, I'm looking forward a lot! The rhythm section announced is: Mulgrew Miller, Reggie Workman, Hamid Drake. I've seen those three in other settings, but on paper, this all looks like an excellent band (and one to fit with Shepp, too, whom I've never seen live ... guess I'd have preferred catching him in the mid sixties, but even if I catch him live, I won't need to buy any of his boring albums of the more recent decades, will I? ) Anyone caught Lateef lately? He's old, so I am a bit worried ... but then I couldn't forgive myself for not having caught him live at all! (I should have gone to Cully in 2007, where he played with the Belmondo brothers, presenting their double disc release - great disc, great concert, Lateef in fine shape back then, but at this age, four years may change a lot.) -
Yeah, actually I guess we ought to be glad to see any activies besides the Spanish and UK ones that are too often lacking soundwise ... but then again I still think evading the often moronic (and certainly marketing-department-dictated) reissue policies would have helped the labels to sell more while they still could have. Now, it seems to be too late, alas. But I'm stocked up on "classics" for (at least) half a lifetime, and there's still plenty of smaller labels releasing great music to keep us busy.

Fine disc indeed, no reason not to get it!

Oh, I didn't know that. So maybe it would be worthwhile my shopping around to see whether the new twofer is cheaper than a copy of the solo CD. Thanks. MG Probably the new ones will be cheaper (on amazon.de it's € 8.99 vs. € 21.99 - the latter being ridiculous for a Verve Originals disc, of course).
-
Yep, and the bonus material from the VME of "Domino" was pretty worthwhile, too! I got the VME even though I've got the big Kirk box. Yes ... I had to look it up as well since I wasn't sure. Got the Nelson Mosaic though, so I won't need it. One more (last?) bit of bitching: the Rich/Krupa ... now the bonus album is actually the continuation (kind of) of Krupa & Rich, yes? Not of the "Drum Battle" (which is worthwhile for fans of Willie Smith! ... and was part of the Verve By Request series). Seems a bit of an odd combination, not unlike plenty of the Impulse 2-on-1 discs were ... anyway, is that bonus album worth getting the twofer for? I'm a bit hesitant judging on the line-up.
-
Dan, I guess I'm talking mostly of the Tjader album - but the Three Sounds is still just okay, rather than good to great (which most of her other Verve albums are!). MG: I guess if you don't know the Hawkins material, the new reissue will be great ... but still, what I find sad about these reissues (same goes for the LPR/Originals series) is that previously available bonus material will be gone for good. It would have been around, and putting it onto the discs wouldn't cost much ... and twofers are quite far from "original album" reissues anway, so why not go all the way and included the previously available bonus material as well? Anyway, for newbies, there's plenty of good stuff here, the JOS, the Hammond, the Ammons/Stitt, the George Russell, the Getz, the Kirk, the Mulligan, the Golson, the Jazztet ... the Brown, Soul Summit an OPs are good as well. Still, this is kind of a not-happening series for me, sorry to say.
-
One more series, once more full of weird choices and odd combinations ... at least there still seem to be what, 0.2 people at Universal Germany working in the jazz department? Why pick the weakest two albums (Creed botched them) of Anita O'Day's great Verve years? Why not do Hawkins right and bring us a 2CD set including the bonus tracks of the previous CD reissues? (Remember, the Impulse 2-on-1 series did included a few 2CD sets ... no bonus material there, just two albums longer than 80 minutes ... but still!) ... Anyway, how are the albums on the Hodges, Brookmeyer and Winding discs? How's the Tormé that's not Shubert Alley (which I have and love)?
