  1. I know you're not too serious about that suggestion, but it really is not, as those "modern" harpsichords tuned to a=440 Hz, high string tension, case and soundboard construction adapted from modern garnd pianos sound pretty awful - when they were built, our knowledge about harpsichord construction between 1600 and 1800 was not as advanced as it is now. Ancient harpsichords have far more overtones and a much richer sound. I'll look for harpsichord recital recommendations in Zurich in the magazines I decribed - try and go hear a good instrument live. Oh, please do! I'm quite lost when it comes to picking concerts ... and I would tend to rather go for modern stuff - but solo harpsichord would definitely be interesting! And obviously I was just joking
  2. Disc four, the great "Wheelin' and Dealin'" session
  3. Ah, crap, that's on Nov 29th and I'll only get back from Lux on Nov 39th! Too bad, Basel would definitely have been an option! Btw, I was at that Black Records - a nice shop, but contrary to most record shops it was rather ... empty and neat, not overflowing with stuff. There's a CD only shop next to it, but as everything closes down so darn early, we had no time to check it out. Maybe next time (week after this one).
  4. discs three and four with the fine Garland sessions
  5. Hooked by Trane ... about to finish disc four. This will be a Trane Prestige day, I guess!
  6. Thanks, didn't know that .... can't read the liners as I don't have the box yet but plan to get it, eventually.
  7. Played the two Haydn discs from the Staier Edition for the first time in the past days and found them surprisingly good (surprisingly, since I, too, am not that convinced by the fortepiano so far).
  8. Remember there are two Monterey sets in the box. Totally agree with you about the 1964 Monterey performance, the "Meditations on Integration" from that is epic. OTOH, the 1965 Monterey performance is a mess, and Mingus himself seems to have known that, cutting it off short. Oh, I indeed forgot about that! All I heard of that 1965 Monterey set is the track on that Malpaso 3CD-set (which actually I got for that one track).
  9. Well, that's not HOW IT IS but HOW (I think) IT SHOULD BE. So no wonder you're not seeing it :-) Would still be useful though, I think! And it's in work on other forums.
  10. Not replying ... tags should be displayed at the bottom of each thread and everybody ought to be able to add them (or delete/edit his/her own).
  11. Very sorry to hear this. Lots of love for his playing!
  12. disc one right now, but will be playing more of it tonight and tomorrow that Bailey/Nistico/Goykovich set looks great - wasn't aware of its existence at all!
  13. Shouldn't everyone be able to add tags later on? I already wondered where they were ... they make sense if people keep adding relevant ones (and they're useless good fun when people add fun ones) whilst a thread derails ...
  14. I'm somewhat amazed about the bashing of "Mingus at Monterey". To me, the long piece with the expanded band is prime Mingus and good enough to make me held the whole album in high esteem!
  15. my two latest finds: damn, what a tone!
  16. I love this 4CD set, at least the three solo discs in it!
  17. Seems Mr Vilburn will do his new drumparts during holiday season and they're aiming for a late January release! http://www.amazon.com/Live-In-Europe-1969-Bootleg/dp/B008YCMM2A/
  18. Found this one: http://www.goodidea.lu/en/living-decor/high-tech-luxembourg/goodidea/black-records/#0 Not made it there, maybe tomorrow, or else second week I'll be here (leaving on Friday afternoon and invited to office drinks tonight - and late work for the past two days - everything seems to close at 6:30 p.m., not very, uhm, cosmopolitan).
  19. Belated best wishes, Rolf!
  20. Here's the cover: I've got a Konitz disc with Mark Masters somewhere, not sure I've really listened to it yet ...
  21. So the subletitles are gone but we still don't get tags? Quite a change ... I still fondly remember the orange days, but I will get used to it this time, too!
  22. Art Farmer/Benny Golson and the Jazztet doing "Django" on their John Lewis album!
  23. Can't do that as I'm not even registered there, never cared to get a feel for that place, but thanks anyway, Hans!
