How about tags? If they can be activated easily (which I don't know of course) that might be good. For instance to find the most interesting Pete Brown discussion hidden in the... what thread was it again? The Hemphill "Dogon A.D." one?

*very much* worth getting! :tup

now playing: Sam Rivers - Contrasts Lined up next are these two: "Paragon" is one of my very favorite Rivers albums! @vinyltim: sorry, didn't note your reply regarding my deepgroove question within due time! Thanks!

Yesterday played the entire new Select in one session - it's amazing! So glad they did this!

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
king ubu replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Still want that (and the Lunceford and the Threadgill and the MJQ and the and the and the... well, that's life, I guess!) Amazed again by how great the first two BN sessions of Rivers' are! Hubbard is wonderful... always the same with him, wonderful sideman, too much showing off when a leader... Hancock/Carter/Chambers are amazing, too! -
Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?

Made my way all through the new Rivers select but posted about it in the wrong thread (done it again...) - blazing, intense, dense and faszinating stuff! Now into disc 2 of the good ol' Rivers set: -
Thanks a lot for sharing this, Agustín! Intriguing... must have over-read this in the "Coltrane Reference" book! Feliz Año Nuevo!

Definitely worth checking out again. For me it's one of the great Miles albums particularly for its difference. same thoughts here. i have a high oppinion of ascenseur pour l'echefaud. But Wilen can hardly be heard there... get "Barney" and "More from Barney" if you can, also the Jazz in Paris reissue of "Jazz sur Seine"! And then get hooked and get many more! Can't really answer the question here, btw... loads of varied listening. Lengthy stretches dedicated to Miles Davis (1968-75), Sonny Stitt, Ella Fitzgerald, Sonny Rollins, Art Blakey, Horace Silver among others recently, but all too often I just reach for what's within reach and on one of the "recently bouth" or "unheard yet" piles.

Sure! You do deserve it, after all! :tup

Sam Rivers & The Rivbea Orchestra - Trilogy (Mosaic Select 38) - disc 1 is there anything in there that is not on: - the complete Bluebird 2CD set - the Savoy "Odyssey" set - the various Verve CDs (2CD set 1956/57, Newport 1957)? has anyone taken the time to compare? -

well, you do need some tape to hold all these cans and bags and boxes together... but why the worm? -
That's cool Allen! But bear with us non-promo-non-media-non-paid folks who struggle to keep up and collect old stuff, too (okay the last part may be an issue, but hey, you help flooding us with great old stuff, too, so don't complain too loudly!) Anyway, I'm not posting a best of 2011 list since I've hardly yet bought 10 new releases from this year... but in a few years, I might have enough of them to post a list - yet then no one will care any longer. Same thing each year... maybe I'm too patient, maybe I mis-allocate my budget, maybe whatever... but I'm no teenage fan waiting for the latest Olivia John single or Julie London cheesecake album cover. Not entirely sure why, but I keep lagging behind all the time... My favorite new releases of the year are: Matana Roberts - Coin Coin Chapter One: Gens de Couleur Libres (Constellation) John Zorn - Nova Express (Tzadik) Marilyn Crispell / Gerry Hemingway - Affinities (Intakt) all of which would get * * * * 1/2 from me. then there are pair of * * * * albums: Colin Vallon - Rruga (ECM) Arthur Doyle Electro-Acoustic Ensemble – Live In Nashville & Louisville (Sagittarius A-Star) and a much longer reissue list: * * * * * Julius Hemphill - Dogon A.D. (International Phonograph) Bill Dixon - Intents and Purposes (International Phonograph) [Cover sagt: 2010] Miles Davis - Bitches Brew Live (Sony/Legacy) Sidney Bechet - The Complete American Masters 1931-1953 (Universal) * * * * 1/2 Black Artists Group - In Paris Ariès (Rank and File) Charles Tolliver Big Band - Mosaic Select 37 (Mosaic) Art Pepper - Blues for the Fisherman (Widow's Taste) Stan Getz Quintets - The Clef & Norgran Studio Albums (Hip-O-Select) First Impulse: The Creed Taylor Collection 50th Anniversary (Hip-O-Select) * * * * Wes Montgomery - Movin': The Complete Verve Recordings (Hip-O-Select) Miles Davis - Tutu (Deluxe Edition) (Warner) Nathan Davis - Rules of Freedom (Universal) Eddy Louiss - Orgue (Universal) Swiss All-Stars (Sonorama) Various: Jazz at the Hollywood Bowl (Hip-O-Select) In the "from the archives" secion (where partly the Tolliver, Pepper, Miles BB Live and Jazz from Hollywood Bowl could also be listed), I have these: * * * * * Miles Davis Quintet Live in Europe 1967 (Bootleg Series Vol. 1) * * * * 1/2 G.F. Fitz-Gerald & Lol Coxhill - The Poppy-Seed Affair (Reel Recordings) Tubby Hayes - Tubby's New Groove (Candid) Tubby Hayes - Dancing in the Dark (The Tubby Hayes Archives Vol. 2) (Savage Solveig) * * * * Ella Fitzgerald - Ella Fitzgerald in Japan (Hip-O-Select) John Surman - Flashpoint: NDR Jazz Workshop April '69 (Cuneiform) And still, there's plenty of new stuff missing, including the Sam Rivers Select, which I've received a few weeks ago but haven't heard a second of yet. Also I've not caught up yet with Chuck's latest (I'm sure the new Roscoe would be on or near the top of the final list). Also haven't gotten several recent Mosaics, or else the Lunceford would be way on top somewhere, too... there's just so much you can handle, ain't there? (EDITED because I messed up and repeated the reissues list instead of including the archives list)

It's quite amazing to me how many of you keep to have seen David Bowie last night... (last time I could've said that was after I'd seen that weird Oshima film with him).
-
Can't you edit the flutist (and add your own or Kenny G's solos) and release them?
-
That's the one I've got (LP version), and here's the cover: Looking for it, I just found another cover... listed on Paris Jazz Corner with the following info: But then the question that just arose: Jeff - or anyone else - any clue as to who the guitar player is, then, if it's not Danny Barker?
-
That Eddie Bert disc that Larry mentions above is pretty fine! So is the Mighty Quinn... Very good player from what I've heard so far - sure would love to find more!
-
Ah well, depending on your point of origin, it's same music from different source Either way, it does look good! Problem is that some original tapes were deleted/re-used, whatever... it would have been too great to hear the complete Basie & Ella live shows, for instance! But there's still lots of material to be found there, that's for sure!
-
Oh, thanks! Wasn't aware of that!
-
Sounds like a similar venture to what WDR has been doing with Jazzline/LaserLight? I wish them good luck... bet if they're trying to do it the right way (I'm not insinuating they don't!), it takes a lot of time and money and patience to clear up rights for these recordings!
-
r.i.p. Barbara Lea Love the two Prestige albums, too! Either there's more than they contain or the discographies make a mess there... not sure, don't have any of the stuff at hand right now... or was there even a third LP? Also, why is the harp player given for the one (great) track on the one album but then is given as unknown on the other one, when the harp tracks seem to stem from the same date?
-
Very sad news. Thanks for all the music, r.i.p. Sam. Thanks brownie for sharing that wonderful photo!
