  1. knock knock... are new guys allowed in here, 50 pages into this mammoth thread? here's what I just posted in the listening thread... being a total Dead newbie... Grateful Dead - Live/Dead Grateful Dead - History of the Grateful Dead, Vol. 1 (Bear's Choice) Grateful Dead - Workingman's Dead Grateful Dead - American Beauty The Dead, well... it was the very first time I bought any Dead on Saturday, and I played all four in a row and enjoyed it a lot. I skipped a few other earlier albums (the second and Aoxomoxoa) - they didn't do much for me upon first listen, too much psychedelia in there... give me the folkish stuff and I'll be happy! I did quite enjoy "Live/Dead" though... sounded similar to Big Brother and the Holding Company (backing Janis, I don't know anything else by them, if there is at all) to my ears... slightly trippier, a bit weirder (and with whimpish/whimsical drumming... not that that is a bad thing, and I'm sure in an actual concert they had more presence and volume...)
  2. ok, seems one order for Shank/Cooper got through... not sure on the status of the other one - for which the following story: I got a mail a day after the final day of the estimated delivery period from said vendor (a big one, I've not had major problems with so far, once they had a "new", well it was [re-]sealed..., disc up and it was very clearly a used one...). So in that mail, they ask me if the package has arrived. No, I reply, but I wouldn't worry, as the delivery period was estimated rather shortish (it had to cross the pond, or should have had to...) A day after I get another mail that a whole shipment of theirs (a post bag they said) was lost, they said it checked out on their end but never checked in anywhere else. They would get a replacement for me... Ok, swell... how will they get a replacement of an OOP item? Yeah, well... Another day later, I get a cancellation note (for the same reason: shipping lost) and refund information for the Pacific Jazz Piano Trios box. The Shank/Cooper order with them is still open, but I guess it's only a question of time until I get a cancellation note and refund as well. So, what's your impression? Is this a fraud, or was there actually a mail bag lost (a container drowned in the ocean with my Selects? a pickpocket at US customs who collects and puts up on ebay OOP Mosaics? A slimy Frenchie who does the same on the other end of the pond?) Or are the speculants among these marketplace sellers? What the fuck do they do with my money in the month or so between I get charged and between their refund? I guess for a select, you could buy about one bullet or something...)
  3. That's been like this for a while (or this like that? anyway...) Seems Universal let Promising Music release some of the titles they had no interest in, themselves. Promising Music picked some weird stuff, in my opinion, but also some goodies (Wilen, Tchicai). I have the Wilen, the Dauner (classic German free), and just got a copy of the nice Dave Pike Set album (which is close to easy listening, but ey...) The main fault of the label, to me, is that the discs are hopelessly overprized. They're well done though, fold-out cardboard, a bit larger than normal digipaks (higher) and with a thick booklet (which does contain little besides German/English versions of the original liners, though). Anyway, I shied away from buying these discs because of the hilarious price (20+ euro unless you buy from some of the large Amazon Marketplace sellers, which I did/do). Have ordered the Tchicai now, finally... and a couple of others (Mariano, Pork Pie).

  5. Congratulations to all of you, Jim!
  6. Rearward is Italian - their only fault is that their releases are a bit overprized... and have bad distribution (at least here... the three Clarke/Boland, Griff/Bags, Shihab compilations, I got them from dustygroove of all places... I'm still somehow thinking an Italian release ought to be cheaper and easier to find over here, but...) Lon, I have all the new ones on my wantlist anyway, no matter how much duplication there might be!
  7. Woody Harrelson JFK JLG
  8. Rearward have a quite a few Clarke/Boland and related titles in print by now: http://www.ishtar.it/framerearward.htm some are weird choices though... I think all or most of "Companionship" is already on one of the older discs (RW 101/102/103), or "Seeds" is on there or something... I have a lot of catching up to do there, as all I have are RW 101, 102 and 103, as well as the related Carl Drewo disc (RW 105) (and the unrelated, fantastic Azzolini disc, RW 104).

    Count Basie

Not that I knew of... it's all over the place period and label-wise. For instance, there's some on a few early Clef sessions (now on a Mosaic set), and there's some on the Pablo albums done in trio format... rather unlikely those would end up on the same disc!
  16. ha, I like that line, "Wackelkontakt zur Ewigkeit" (it means something like: Jarrett has a "loose connection to eternity", or "defective contact" or whatever is the most appropriate translation)
  17. Uncle Sam Sam The Man Taylor Willie The Lion Smith
  18. BraffOesterRohrer were fantastic again last night!

  22. The Gibbs is great (though there seem to be no detailed session infos available for either albums, alas). And the Merrill is sublime! ********** Ordered Patton's "Accent on the Blues" from a US ebay vendor (20$, no biggie with the $ so cheap). I fell for Amazon's CDR plot (back when it still said "Audio CD" in the big description and the actual info was hidden in the small print) and have been annoyed over that ever since... now I'm still missing "Blue John" (by the time I saw that one up on Amazon again I was smart enough to check the small print...) Also bought the second release by BraffOesterRohrer at their concert last night - very good one, just gave it a first spin: BraffOesterRohrer - Walkabout (Unit Records UTR 4203) And I received a small order from a Swiss vendor I wasn't aware of, which still had these three in stock, amazingly! "Akisakila" is the German Konnex version (of which I found "Akisakila Vol. 2 / Lono" used a few years ago), and the ZoKoSo completes my run of Koller's MPS reissues. All three of them were albums I thought I'd have to do with CDR copies, glad to have found them!
  23. Serge Gainsbourg Thomas Gainsborough William Hogarth
  24. I didn't even realize that all these artists were signed to Warner then (and some now... Nonesuch is Warner, too, or at least Warner-distributed or something...) Another one: Gram Parson's "GP / Grievous Angel" twofer... also on Reprise, of course
  25. Because of Warner Bros.? More a fan of their film productions... the great early Emmylou album were on Reprise (was that part of Warner by '75 already?), and Joni Mitchell went on to Asylum (same question: when did that enter the Warner Group?)
