Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
king ubu replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I noticed that it appeared in both Last Chance and Running Low, not sure if that's the usual form. These pre-war Mosaic wear very well I've noticed and are so well executed. Yes, and in this case I noticed the first three CDs all being 70-75 minutes long, so they were kind to make this a 6 and not 7CD set, too (the rule seems to be that discs clock in around 60 minutes, no?) -
happy birthday, claude schlouch!

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?

My Hodges & Prima/Manone package was finally delivered two hours ago... big relief! Now halfway through disc two of the Prima/Manone - great one so far, glad I got it! -
1 of 10 is otherwise also known as 10%, so go figure... Right, what about the added free shipping though? I guess it depends on how many items you are ordering... $15 max... never mind my rambling... sorry, forgot about that... shipping is hilariously expensive for us yurpeens, even if they offer free shipping in the US, they charge something like 30$ for a 100$ order and from there it goes up a $ or two with each CD you add... and their FAQ site still says they don't ship internationally anyway...

Thanks for reminding me... I tell you, it will be hard to control yourself once you'll stand in front of that shelf, I spent an hour there on Saturday, had my Penguin guide with me and some notes I took over the years... Ordered some from JPC, all on sale: Depart - Reloaded (ACT) Joachim Kühn - the piano solo album (ACT) Brubeck - Ret Hot & Cool or whatever it's called (Sony/Legacy) and the NY Contemporary Five Storyville CD (wanted that one for a looooong time) I was there yesterday. You were right, I really had a hard time These are the spoils: Earl Hines And His Orchestra: 1934-1937 (Classics) Johnny Guarnieri: 1944-1946 (Classics) John Kirby: The John Kriby Sextet 1939-1941 (Columbia, 2 cd) Andy Kirk And His Twelve Clouds Of Joy: 1936-1937 (Classics) Mills Blue Rhythm Band: 1934-1936 (Classics) Flip Phillips: Together Flip & Woody (BBC) George Wein: The Magic Horn (RCA) Various: Swing Trumpet Kings - Harry Edison, Buck Clayton, Red Allen, Roy Eldridge (Verve, 2 cd) The overall price was Swiss Francs 114 (roughly the same in $), making it 11.40 Francs per disc, not bad. And the postman brought these: Art Pepper: The Hollywood Sessions (Galaxy) Atsuko Hashimoto Organ Trio: Time After Time (Thousand Days) feat. Jeff Hamilton The Kirk I had already... I took the two following volumes! As for Kirby, I was considering both the Classics and that 2CD set but instead got the Circle 1CD transcription disc - I've had no Kirby at all before and wasn't sure how much to get... the Swing Trumpet Kings I got from an Amazon Marketplace seller a while back (and the Eldridge album is of course in the Mosaic) - the Sweets/Clayton is fantastic! (The main reason I wanted to get it, as Sweets never really got the treatment he deserved from Verve... there was the VEE double, then the LPR, plus one album on this 3-on-2 set and one on the Webster 3-on-2 set... I haven't checked what else he did for Verve, but a box with all of this would be great!)

No idea, but they did re-unite last year (from the site I linked on the first page): -

I did hope (and think) so, but still taking a step back I felt stupid about posting that (it's pretty irrelevant anyway...) Did you pass by the store already? You'll have to ask specifically, I assume (the one guy that was there still recognizes me although I usually drop by once a year only, but he always pulls out piles of stuff not displayed... or just say you heard about the Classics from someone... I plan to pass by later this afternoon. They mention the classics on their website and encourage to ask for items not displayed. Will report back... Just remember, the month only just started, you'll need some money for food and other things, too!

I think this is the only one I've heard - very good: Hamiet Bluiett - Im/Possible to Keep (2CD)

Thanks, makes more sense than 500 alltogether... great box, and one of the very things so far that I've actually pre-ordered (or at least I ordered it just when it was released, can't even remember).

the "I'm Getting Old and I Can't Find My Teeth"

ah well, another reason to refuse getting older... I'll stay mentally 13, then, forever (young)! -
500 in total, or 500 remaining (how many in total then)? great box, in my opinion (only bad is the overlap with the Ayler release, but I've said that before...)

getting old, huh? alles gute zum geburtstag!

Ok, I see - that's how I do it - but then still I prefer having the actual product (and hoping the house won't burn down...) but longterm-wise, it's not so simple, really, is it? As far as I know, there are not good digital solutions for longterm archiving yet. That's the smartest approach I assume... No need to discuss this further here, it just popped into my thoughts upon reading this thread. These kinds of downloads just don't hold a lot of interest for me. Now if Sony/BMG and EMI and everyone would start offering their historical recordings (say, from the beginnings to the 40s or something) in *complete* fashion and good quality, that would be a whole different thing - the possibility to fill up gaps session by session, also stuff on smaller labels, that would be great, sort of like a huge library where you can borrow/buy anything you want, not just your latest new album crap. Now I promise I finish ranting for today

I have this here, besides the albums with Rahsaan: http://cdbaby.com/cd/dickgriffin2 Fine one!

I still prefer the actual product. Has anyone started thinking about the durability of digital files? (ok ok, CDs contain digital files, too, but they're on a physical carrier which should not disintegrate too fast). What are you doing with all those MP3s? Store them on various huge external drives? What if one goes bad, do you keep them twice (is that even allowed or would that be piracy already? Are you allowed to hook up such a drive on several computers or will the files auto-destruct when you do that...?) Seriously: what about the durability? I am well aware that CDs are most likely not for externity, but they're still around anw working after more than 20 years. Will that be the case with digital files? I know HDs are growing in size, and quite possibly we'll be able to store things online eventually, so we might not keep HDs ourselves (if we then trust to whomever stores whatever you want them store - I'd not trust too much...). What are you people doing about all this? My situation is such that I do have two external HDs filled with music and am about to buy two new ones to do an actual "music library", backed up on two drives containing all the same stuff. No way I could keep it all on my internal HD or even less on my ipod, and it keeps expanding... (mainly in my case by radio shows I download in mp2 format as well as by MP3s ripped from my own CDs).

1 of 10 is otherwise also known as 10%, so go figure... The Dexter is fine! Though several of us yurpeens will fondly remember the crazy months when the ZYX license ran out and zweitausendeins was selling it for much less dollari. Those were the days!

Yes, that's the one I have! Fine one indeed! 't was on the beeb and hence it's out there

Hm, I have one of those great 70s Wheeler albums that were reissued on - I think - Evan Parker's label, the one with Derek Bailey jamming with the band on one track, amazing stuff! That's one of the albums I think where Sulzmann makes a sideman appearance. I still need the expensive ECM... in fact I'd need more Wheeler anyway!
-
A favourite of mine for many years. His 'On Loan With Gratitude' is one of the great lost discs of the 70s. The opening track used to be the theme tune of 'Jazz Today' at one stage. His surname is also impossible to spell - I have to check every time! Sulzmann....I want to insert a 't' or dock an 'n'. yeah, but then you're not from Workshop either... I've heard little Sulzmann, but I enjoyed that - is there any "classic" album of his that one should get? Or even better, a recent good one?

you see, that's why this thread is *really* called the "funny rat" - this is about dried rat dogs and peruvian guinea pigs... and some such...
