  1. That's weird. According to baseballreference.com, Nova has good run support, but it's only 6.38 per game. That's quite a discrepancy.
  2. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
  3. Blue Note has been reinfected by what I call "Sidewinder Syndrome". That's when they stumble on a song like "The Sidewinder" or an artist like Norah Jones and spend the next few years trying to put the toothpaste back in the tube.
  4. This may be somewhat selfish on my part but, frankly, I don't give a hoot in hell what anyone else thinks. I know what I like and if I was the only person in the world who liked it, that would be fine with me. Folks waste way too much time and energy analyzing music and allowing others to influence their judgement, but not enough listening for themselves. Follow your own muse, it's the only one you have and, more importantly, it's the only one you need.
  5. That's the quietest 15-4 record I've ever seen. You look at it and your first reaction is "how did that happen?"
  6. Not that I disagree with him, but Kurt could wind up being mistaken for a latter day Wynton Marsalis.
  7. Out here in Ory-gone, we're anxiously awaiting tomorrow night's game with #4 LSU. If the Ducks can win this one, it gets them moving in the sort of direction that could put them in the Natty for a second straight year. A loss, and it becomes a season on the brink after just one game. My step-daughter, who's a senior at the U this year, is in Dallas for the game. Part of her 21st birthday present. I'm sure I'll be getting regular texts and pictures from on the scene as the game unfolds. GO DUCKS
  8. First hint: He's a jazz musician! Herbie Mann or Mitch Miller or both.
  9. Yes and no. Gonzalez hasn't seen Mo more than a handful of times. As they were saying on the MLB network, he's never seen a pitch like the one Rivera throws. Advantage Mo. Some horrendous calls behind the plate. Ellbury struck out to end the game and wound up on first base. Then Gonzalez is called out on what was neither as swing nor a strike. Nice.
  10. If I was an odds maker, where would I put the over/under in tonight's game between the Yankee and Red Sox. Let's see, run-a-minute A.J. Burnett is starting for New York and Jon Lester for Boston. I'll give the Yanks three against Lester, but I'll give Boston 10 against the Yanks (mostly on A.J.) Total: 13.
  11. I think it may be a Dave Grusin tune called Mountain Dance.
  12. Penny Marshall.
  13. The Voice, That Is defines the term smooth at its most languid, laid back and listenable. With accompaniment from Hank Jones and Barry Galbraith, it's a cut above anything else Hartman ever did...yes, even the album with Coltrane, although that too remains one of my favorites. A couple of songs stick out for me. The opener, My Ship and Joey, Joey, Joey. There's something about those two that hits home every time I hear them.
  14. Correct, Jim! I learned last night that he was the President of the Screen Actors Guild thirty years ago, preceding Ed Asner. Patty Duke's dad on the Patty Duke Show and the English teacher, Mr. Pomfritt, on The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis. At age 89, he's still working. Most recently on the HBO series True Blood. Probably one of the busiest actors in the history of television.
  15. OK, I suppose nobody here above 30 knows her. Apparently she is the hot topic for every guy under 30 in America. Last hint: She was named Rookie of the Year in this year's Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. That's Kate Upton. She is drop dead gorgeous. Try this one on for size:
  16. Sonny Rollins and Don Cherry, a.k.a. Sonny and Cher. Thanks for ruining my dumb one liner: 'What? No I got you Babe'. I know. I know. You did us all a favor.............. This is me shutting up and watching the clip.............. Sorry, Joel, I just couldn't resist.
  17. Sonny Rollins and Don Cherry, a.k.a. Sonny and Cher.
  18. Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water.
  19. Just spitballin' here, but I'm guessing the last thing the Rangers want to see coming to town again any time soon would be the Red Sox.
  20. This is the one. My favorite Leiber tune done by one of my favorite singers. I get a genuine post-apocolyptic vibe from this.
  21. NPR recently did a story on early Sly when he was a Bay Area record producer and went by the name of Sly Stewart. Stone came later. Here's a link: My link
  22. Boy I guess. This has to be the deepest well ever drilled by the music industry. At some point, this will have to stop, but I wouldn't want to bet on when that will happen.
  23. Well, there's some genuinely depressing news.
  24. If you haven't played hockey, it's hard to describe. I don't know if it's the sticks, the contact, the boards , the net play or a combination of all four, but it just lends itself to physicality. Lots of stuff just happens and you go from there. When I first started playing, helmets were not mandatory. I had hair down to my shoulders and guys used to like to grab onto it a reef me around when we'd get into scrums. When that sort of thing starts happening, it's real easy to drop the gloves and take it to the next level. And, not being what I'd call a finesse player, I had more than my fair share of fights. Don't get me wrong, I'm no advocate of bench clearing brawls, and to its credit, the NHL has taken steps to keep that sort of thing to a minimum. Still, fighting is so much a part of the game, it just belongs. And don't give me this bull dinky about the international game being free of fighting and more attractive as a result. Not to me, and, I'd think, not to anyone who's spent any time close to the game.
  25. Some info: January 26, 1972 (to be posted) ‘The Blue Note Show’ Guests: Keyboardist Horace Silver with vocalists Andy and Salome Bey, trumpeter Lee Morgan, flutist Bobbi Humphrey Host: Ellis Haizlip SOUL http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aB7eL5tXNUI No way that's Horace Silver on piano. Looks more like Harold Mabern. Who's the saxophone player? Cool video.
