wow what a great record this is. I’d say it’s pretty unique in sound. The bonus track is definitely must have. Recorded pretty rough but must say it adds up to the dark atmosphere. Can’t go wrong with Daniel, Khan Jamal and Jerome Cooper.

Their pricing seems very randomly chosen. Weird because i've had some good experiences with Mion Berlin. They were selling Japanese vinyl for pretty reasonable prices.

I wasn’t aware of that. They did some vinyl reissues in the past decade I believe. Never heard one. I do know that some of them miss essential tracks that the cd does have. Like Johnny Dyani’s Somg for Biko: that one misses the amazing track Lonely Flower at the Village.

an MJQ favorite. Don’t know if it’s his best but definitely among his best. That’s such a great record. Addictive music. Joe made lot of great music for that label back than. Happy to see it spinning on your turntable now Mark enjoy!

When I saw the last vinyl copies sold for 400+ dollars and a cd copy popped up from a Dutch seller I decided to quit my quest for the LP and buy the cd. Contains an extra track as well

He's on a whole lot of Prestige records as a sideman. He was kind of the house pianist. But his playing there is mostly restrained and in a different style than his post 1965 records with a few exceptions when he played with Dolphy. Mal moved more into free territory after 1968 though his music always remained pretty structured. If you're looking for more interesting solo outings than the one you listened to: The Opening (Clifford mentioned this one already) Update (on Soul Note) Meditations: Live at Dug (calmer than the Opening but with a lot of emotional depth) And if you're looking for more of the rhythmic trio music you encountered at the last part of that cd: Black Glory (on Enja with Jimmy Woode Number Nineteen (like A.L.B.O.M. with excellent Dutch musicians and a little more exciting) First Encounter (with Gary Peacock) Blood and Guts (sounds like the title: heavy stuff and rhytmically very interesting) Tokyo Bound (with two excellent Japanese musicians) Free at Last (on ECM but not very ECMish, this is probably his best known)

The previously unreleased Sounds of Liberation stuff. Again with that beautiful artwork.

lovely underrated spiritual Freejazz gem on Baystate. Unfortunate Ruff didn’t make a lot more records except his few appearances as a sideman.

That's Superior Viaduct right? We could hope for a series, but I think it's more because of Joe McPhee this get's reissued. The label has an affiliation with him. Some Steve Lacy or Cecil Taylor reissues would be very nice

I've got the Japanese LP but can't recall any tape speed issues.

These Free America Series were among the first Freejazz albums I bought when I was in my teens. Beautiful packaging! Instill consider Free Huey as a modern free jazz classic.

That was my way to go as well but didn’t always had the desired effect. With the lighter fuel you’re able to get the glue residue as well. Definitely worth a try 👍

Now it would be a nice gift this Christmas. My birthday as well. But it probably won’t happen.
