I am now listening to my copy of the 1999 Deluxe 50th anniversary edition and the horns do sound a bit harsh. The disc is not particularly loud. I can comfortably put the volume dial at nine o'clock. I believe the earlier US disc had some extreme stereo separation issues and the recent Japanese mono disc I used to own has boosted highs and so must sound even harsher and probably louder.

If it's a Warner CD that sounds harsh, then it must be the mastering. The Japanese mono CD from a few years back was incredibly bright (and loud). Are you familiar with the 2 CDs worth of alternate and incomplete takes that are available in the trading community? I want everything. All the late period studio stuff that's unreleased, and, like Mikeweil, the complete February 2, 1966 session. Also, if available, more live recordings in decent sound quality. Bring it on! I also want Expression in good sound quality. All Japanese and US CDs I have heard sound awfully compressed and harsh. Just compare Offering from the beautiful 2011 SHM-CD of Stellar Regions to any CD release. An appalling difference!
