  1. I always liked PATTERNS. I actually thought that this was a Reid Miles at first since it's very similar to BASRA.
  2. We get the Country Style ribs here in NY and they are very good. I like to marinate them a day-ahead in a mixture of hot sauce, cider vinegar and a little brown sugar and then throw them on the grill.
  3. Frank Zappa and the Mothers' WEASLES RIPPED MY FLESH. One of the all-time greatest album title and cover. The music ain't bad either
  4. It's been the Randy Weston Mosaic for me since it arrived at my door on Wednesday.
  5. Thanks for the recommendations Late. I listened to Disc 2 last night and it keeps getting better. Piano-a-La-Mode is wonderful as is the unreleased session with Cecil Payne on baritone - how this session went unreleased is a mystery to me.
  6. The Randy Weston Set was waiting for me when I got home yesterday. I only had a chance to listen to disc 1 which contains Little Niles and Live at the Five Spot last night, but I can tell already that I'm going to have to add some more Weston to my collection.
  7. Been on a Proper Box kick lately - just picked up the Nat Cole set in additon to the Dexter Gordon and Wardell Gray.
  8. My real name is Frank. Ralphie boy (actually Ralph) is a nickname that I acquired about eight years ago when we bought our house. My next-door neighboor, who has since moved started calling me Ralph one day for no apparent reason. I originally introduced myself as Frank but for some reason, he thought I was Ralph. Best part of the story is that after a few months of this, I finally told him that my name was Frank. He called me Frank for about a week or so and then went back to Ralph. Once my friends heard this story (and witnessed a "hello Ralph"), they started calling me Ralph. I'm also a Honeymooner's fan, so I decided to go with Ralphie boy.
  9. Wardell Gray and Dexter Gordon Proper boxes. These 4-cd sets, at approx. $18 are the best buys that I've seen in a long while. Nat King Cole and Fats Navarro are next on the list.
  10. Let me also throw in a recommendation for the Mosaic set. All of the sessions feature Stanley with either a trumpet and/or trombone in the front line and are damm good! I especially like Comin' Your Way, with brother Tommy and Jubilee Shout.
  11. A good bet would be to pick-up both THE RINGER and GRAND MAX on Black Lion.
  12. Unfortunately, Andrew!!! has never been released on CD. It's easily obtainable on vinyl however and is well worth seeking out. Great playing by John Gilmore!
  13. Picked up the Wardell Gray Proper Box and have been spinnin' that all weekend. Good stuff!
  14. 1) True Blue 2) Judgement 3) The In-Between 4) Smokestack 5) Symphony For Improvisors H/M: Soul Stirrin', Thinking of Home
  15. Thanks for the info guys. I'll wait awhile to see what happens on the reissue front.
  16. Anyone have a set that they would like to sell or know the whereabouts of one? Please let me know. Thanks!
  17. Trout Mask is an absolute masterpiece! I'm partial to Doc at the Radar Station also. I recently put Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller) on the turn table for the first time in about 10 years and it still sounds good. Love the Captain!
  18. LEV is terrific, regardless of whatever one's position is as to the vocals. I prefer the "original" session w/ Shaw and Carlos Garnett, but the session with Morgan is also top-notch. I've actually grown to enjoy the vocals and find that they lend added color and dimension to the compositions.
  19. Here's a few thoughts: Donald Byrd - A New Perspective Herbie Hancock - Mayden Voyage Woody Shaw - Little Red's Fantasy Roland Kirk - The Inflated Tear
  20. William Parker's O'Neil's Porch Woody Shaw Mosaic Lou Donaldson Mosaic Andrew Hill's Lift Every Voice
  21. Absolutely agree! Stanley Cowell's Brilliant Circles is also excellent, but the sound quality is very poor. I happen to like Ayler's Going Home - it's a set of spirituals and is more straight ahead than his other work.
  22. Can anyone comment on the Nat King Cole Trio set? I'm considering this one. Thanks.
  23. Yes, I definitely recommend Blackstone Legacy. Great playing by all involved, especially Bennie Maupin and George Cables.
