  1. I've said it before and I'll say it again, CONTOURS needs to hit the market!
  2. These sets are an incredible value! BeBop Spoken Here is excellent. My two faves however are the Wardell Gray and the Coleman Hawkins. I also have the Nat King Cole which is fantastic. Lots of music for little $$.

    Yo La Tengo

Anybody out there dig The Flaming Lips? I bought Zaireeka recently and I'm having fun with it. For those unfamilar with this, it's a 4CD set which contains parts of the same songs on each separate disc. You can play any combination of the discs on up to 4 stereos and experience something different each time.
  4. Nail polish remover works too.
  5. I feel the same way as the others - he doesn't ruin the date, but there's that swing-style quality to his playing that just don't fit in the context of the session. Roach would have definitely been the perfect choice for this one.
  6. I dig this session! Maupin is a monster on this one and George Cables puts down some of the best electric piano that I've ever heard. It is different than other Shaw sessions though - as someone else mentioned, very reminisent of Bitches Brew-era Miles.
  7. Tom, I've also been walking the tightrope between the business and I.T. areas for many years. Like you, I've spent a good deal of my career as a business systems analyst, defining user requirements, preparing technical specs, etc. For the past four years, I've been managing projects, mostly implementations of packaged solutions. I don't particularly enjoy managing either, and it's especially difficult in a project setting, when the team is made up of employees from various areas of the organization. I'm also tired of I.T. work in general and I'm looking to make a change. I've also considered Architecture and was willing to go back to school, but there are no part-time evening programs that I know of in my area and unfortunately I need to keep working full-time. I'm now applying to a part-time evening law school program. I don't have any good advice for you other than what others have offered. Tailor your resume to each specific job that you're interested in and focus on the skills and competencies that they're looking for. I wish you the best of luck.
  8. I picked up the Sergio Mendes recently through BMG when they were running a $6.99 sale with no shipping. It's short, but sweet!
  9. Live in SF is excellent. I also dig On This Night, also on Impulse.
  10. I wouldn't mind smoking a few of those babies!
  11. Please accept my condolences. I know how hard it is to loose a beloved pet. I lost a beautiful black lab suddenly several years ago - he was only 9 yrs old. Fortunately you had a good long time with Gypsy.
  12. I didn't realize Viagara was around back then
  13. I love Soundin' Off. I picked up the TOCJ a few years ago and it's one of the most often played discs in my collection. Great sound, great playing. I love the fact that Dizzy is the sole horn on this date, so his playing comes to the forefront. Wonderful session.
  14. I finally picked up a copy of this after holding off for quite awhile. As I imagined, this is definitely a departure from his previous work. Part R&B (sounding alot like King Curtis to me at times), part gospel, part do-wop, part God knows what else; but all in all, not a bad session. Wondering what others think about this one?
  15. Coffee is the one addiction that I can't kick. Quitting smoking - no problem. Loosing weight - no problem. Can't get off the Java though (nor do I ever want to).
  16. I asked my dear old mother-in-law for the Bennie Green for xmas.
  17. Exercise is the key! I've lost about 40 lbs over the past 1 1/2 years mainly by exercising 30 minutes every morning (and 1 hr on weekends). I'm to a point now where I don't really have to watch what I eat anymore, although I still go easy on the carbs. Exercise sucks - I hate it, but it's the only way.

    Solo Sax

Some of it's very intense, but definitely worth checking out.
  19. Let's not forget the Booker Ervin's.
  20. I picked up GHETTO MUSIC recently and it is a very unique and rewarding session. As mentioned above, I think it would appeal to any Sun Ra fans out there. I find that it has an almost "theatrical" feel to it - akin to a stage production. Lon's review on AAJ tells the story.
  21. I have it and enjoy it. The later sessions (whose titles I don't recall at the moment) are very good. One of them features Lee Morgan. I'd say that all of the sessions included in the set are excellent. I particularly dig Jubilee Shout.
  22. How soon do you need it back?? Wise guy! You could toast me a copy if you like
  23. I guess I have to give this session another try. As I mentioned, for some reason it didn't click with me the first couple of times that I played it.
  24. I have the Wardell Gray, Nat King Cole and the Bebop compilation. All good! Next will be the Hawkins, Navarro and Tristano.
  25. The new JSP box would be a good for you. 5 CDs covering studio recordings made between 1940 and 1950. For approx. $25 w/ shipping, it's a great deal.
