What?! No Wynton Marsalis BDay? -
montg, start with one of his any one of his piano duets Ellis Larkins (Vanguard). Then pick up one of his quartet sessions with George Barnes (Cornet-Piano-Guitar-Bass). You may also want to pick "The Best of Ruby Braff" (Bethlehem) with tracks from a couple of 10" albums recorded in 1955.

What brownie said. I'm a big fan of Gibb's dream band. I own all 6 volums and I like them all, with volumes 1 & 5 are a little bit better than the great others.

Jewel Case Creator Software...

Swinging Swede, that's an excellent job you've done! Do you think you can attach that back cover as a word file? I'll be very grateful if you'll do that. Thanks! -
Ron, once again thanks the pics, keep them coming! Two questions that interests me a trivia Q and a serious one: 1. Do you know why Jim Pepper pronounces Witchi Tai to as Witchi tai ta 2. What was Jim's possition regarding the supression of American-Indian culture? Did he think that this supression hurt him and his artistic success and acceptance?

You're absolutely right! Thank you for sharing these memories, Ron. BTW, do you know this CD? A friend f mine who has it says it's rediculously short. But how's the music?

Ron, Yep, that was me who "milked" you for info about Anchorage music scene. Once again, thanks - it was very helpful. We spent a GREAT month in Alaska, camping and kayaking in Kenai, the southeast and the interior. Ron, I'll be interested to hear more about Jim Pepper as a person, as a friend. I read that Jim had a somewhat unexpected behaviour due to all kind of problems he had. Is that so? Thanks. As a thank you note, and since I seem to remember you love to fish - here's a pic we took in your great state.

Ever since returning from our Alaskan trip, I've been on another trip - a Jim Pepper trip. (I didn't learn about Pepper's Juneau connection till I was there) Jim Pepper was a great tenor player imho. His sound is very unique, very original. In a world of Hhendersons/Coltranes/Shorter clones that itself is very noteworthy. I love his Jazz-Native American synthesis. It sounds so natural when he does it. Who else can make an album with a blues, an Ornette tune, an old ballad (and Polka dots...) and an original based on a Native American chant - and make the album sound coherent and well balances? Jim pepper was at his best when he worked with Mal Waldron, imo. But his work with Kirk Lightsey was great as well. Anyone else share a love for this almost forgotten master?

Happy Holidays, from Organissimo!!!
White Lightning replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
Jim, Joe, randy: What a great gift! (even for those of us who don't celebrate the holidays). Thank you sooo much - you put a BIG smile on my face. Thanks! -
Happy birthday Jim, and many happy returns!!

vibes, I LOVe those 2 CDs you don't for!!! For me it's the Jimmy Smith set. Didn't do nothing for me. There are many better recordings by Jimmy smith out there (and in my collection). This made the set IMO - a complete waste of money. There are sets that I KNOW I won't like so I don't bother buying, such as the Four Freshmen and Bobby Hackett sets.

I'll be interested to know your (everybody's) definition of Listeners and Collectors. It seems to me everyone has a diferent definition thus categorizes oneself differently than another would.

A few days ago I asked you guuys to come up with some questions re Slava Ganelin and/or his trio. Unfortunately, I got little response. I guess it's because Ganelin is not a household name in the States (he's not a household name in Israel as well ). Anyways, Yesterday a memorial concert took place to remember one of Israel's pioneers in Jazz - Roman Kunsman. Ganelin played there an original number he composed in memory of Kunsman. I thought some of you may be interested in hearing it, so Click here BTW - the alarm clock is an integral part of the number. The emcee is not... B

Happy B-Day, Dmitry and many happy returns!! -
Got the BFT4 discs yesterday. Thanks Jim! Spinned the Disc 1 last night, and that's what I came up with: 1. Nice piano intro. Sound Siver-ish to me. It was a surprise when the horns joined in after 2:30+ mins. I thought it was a solo piano cut. I think I know the player, but I can't name them. The Tenor sounds Texan. The Fluglehorn(?) is VERY nice. Is that a Monk tune? 2. Didn't like this track! Sounds like a rough sketch of a cartoon sountrack. 3. Didn't do much for me. The sax player doesn't say much. The trumpet has great sound. Maybe a latino group? Some latin feel in that track, though not a latin style track. 4. Sounds like a 70s big-band. Din't do much to me as well. The only nice solo here is from the Bari Sax. Others didn't say much in there solos. 5. JB! Love this track! 6. Yikes! Bluh! Cheesy strings and an altogether a Zzzzzzzzzz feel. 7. A mont tune. Like this track a lot. Strange, beautifully-haunting. Is that a clarinet or a sax? Probably the latter but sounds like a clarinet in a few places. Is it Giuffre? 8. Secret Love. Nice tenor. don't know whao the organ player is - But WHAT"S WITH THAT AWEFUL FENDER BASS???!!! 9. Bluh 10. Dixi drums, no idea who this is. 11. Didn't do much for me. WW1 ditty 12. WTF?! Nice tenor. Zorn maybe? I love the Bass player! 13. I like that cut. 2 cool school sax players. is one of them Bud Shank? 14. Almost like being in love. Another Pres disciple. Or maybe it's Pres himself? If not - maybe an un-inspired Getz. 15. Love this track. Hamp & Fatha Hines? or is it Guarnieri? Great pianist anyway. Now on to the second disc...
