Do narrower musical tastes equal greater passion?
Jim Alfredson replied to A Lark Ascending's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I'm reminded of what Branford Marsalis said once in a master class at Michigan State. He was talking about influences and traditions. He said something along these lines: "The problem is, for instance, you have all these bands that listened to Led Zepplin and they want to sound like them. But they don't go back and listen to what Led Zepplin was listening to... they don't go back to the blues. So instead of something cool, you wind up with Whitesnake." Hehe... Whitesnake. They suck. -

Damn, Rooster! How'd you find that! Yeah, my bro and I are using our personal moderation forum to test the new Political Forum skin. I'm still working on it, so it might be awhile. I'm still working on a couple alternative overall skins for those that don't dig the orange and purple. So much to do... -
We got one comment on our CD about weak compositions, too. It's fine. Like jazz1 said, it's just his/her opinion. No harm. Can't please everybody. Jazz1, I'll take it off your hands, too.

I have KOB of course and Somethin' Else. I haven't heard of the Gil Evans... that sounds intriguing!!

Do narrower musical tastes equal greater passion?
Jim Alfredson replied to A Lark Ascending's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I'm glad Chris brought up the industry's role in this. I don't see it as purely the musician's role as such. The argument that kids with less musical ability rocked the boat (literally) back in the 60s and have since run out of steam due to technology that allows less talented people to create music is lame. These supposedly less talented people wouldn't have an audience if it wasn't for the record companies. Sometime in the early part of the century they realized they could make serious money selling records. The trick is to sell what's popular. To find what's popular before anyone else does and milk the crap out of it, they came up with formulas. After refining their formulas decade after decade after decade they've managed to distill the hard edge and rebelliousness of rock/pop into a dull sludge. It was inevitable. But the revolution will not be televised. It's on the internet, baby! -

I love him, but I only have his Riverside/Capitol stuff. What else do I need to check out?

Sets you wish Mosaic would do
Jim Alfredson replied to vibes's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Thanks for posting here, gilles. I would love more Cannonball too! If more people listened to him, maybe we'd have more alto players around!! -
I don't know if it's that people have lost respect for musicians or whether it's that they don't expect that much from them because of the banality of so much music that constantly bombards them.

I got the TA gig this semester for jazz history!
Jim Alfredson replied to CJ Shearn's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Funny... I thought "TA" stood for something completely different... -
I thought I would have to change my life this winter. I was dying! My wife was very gently but firmly pushing me to get a day job. I applied for a couple, including with the post office. Luckily nothing came from them because since summer started, I've been busier than hell! Hopefully this dry spell will break soon, Soul Stream.

One thing I have been experiencing lately that's pissed me off is lame audiences, like Soul Stream is complaining about. But I'm not talking about the trio. I'm talking about the audiences we get with the R&B band. Man, this weekend we were smoking. Our lead singer just got diagnosed with mild diabetes, which is horrible, but it's also a blessing because now he can't drink himself into the ground on the gig. Man, when he's sober he sounds fuckin' great and actually gave me shivers a few times this weekend. So anyway, we played our asses off. I had more fun with that band than I've had in a long time. And we filled the dance floor the whole time. But the annoying thing was, whenever the song got done, all those people on the dance floor would just leave. No applause, no cheers, nothing. It's like we're a fuckin' CD or something! "HELLO! WE'RE LIVE MUSICIANS UP HERE! SOME RECIPRICATION PLEASE!!" I guess people are too tied up in their own worlds.
-
It's been hard to get gigs, but the ones we've been getting have been paying decently. I'm sorry to hear about your woes, Mike. I feel for you. I was talking with Ron Blake on the phone tonight and he was lamenting that it's going to get worse before it gets better. The economy sucks, people aren't spending money or going out, and the arts suffer. I just heard on the radio today that we're adding another half a trillion dollars to the national debt (thanks Bush!) which will dampen people's spirits even more. It's crazy. I feel lucky that I'm booked every weekend here, but most of my work isn't with the trio, it's with the R&B band that plays more popular music. When things are bad, playing in a blues band is pretty good... people wanna hear the blues.

Uh.... what?

Is it just me...

That's definately true for Organissimo! -
For over-the-top greaziness, may I suggest a little Jimmy Smith/Stanley Turrentine "Prayer Meeting" on the phonograph? With Kenny Burrell on guitar and the underrated Donald Bailey on drums, the pot just sits there and cooks slowly the whole time!!!

skeith, are you by any chance using a laptop? I know that the colors of this board get kind of messed up on laptop screens. Maybe you can't see the boxes clearly because they blend in with the background. In any case, yes the box with the original message in it is where you put your reply. You can either leave the original message in there and type your reply, or erase it and type your reply. The box should be directly across from all the Clickable Smilies. Hope this helps.

Just got a reply from Derek Sivers, the person who owns and operates CDBaby. We've been using CDBaby to sell our CDs online since June and they've been fantastic. I emailed Derek asking his advice on the matter. The boldface is mine. This is what worries me. The guys my brother-in-law dealt with buy up companies like this, pay themselves huge salaries, and then leave the company bankrupt. I hope we can get our money before then...

Parliament live in Philly tomorrow (8/24)
Jim Alfredson replied to Peter Johnson's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Ticketbastard, hehe. So true, so true. Why is the government going after Microsoft and not these bozos? They have the most clear-cut monopoly there is.
