Waiting for the Boogaloo Sisters... RELEASED!
Joe G replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
Thanks for the kind words, Jim. That means a lot to us. I think it was I who came up with the sick bridge , though it's equally Jim's tune. I'm also glad to hear you like Life Wish. And I'll say it here like I said it in my PM to you: Quartet Out ROCKS!!!!! -
How many times a day to you visit the board?
Joe G replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Forums Discussion
Thanks, Ghost. It certainly makes our website more interesting. I'm sure we'd have like 10 hits a day were it not for the forum. It's also cool to be able to meet boardmembers whenever we get a chance to travel and play. -

Less (6-10) since the beginning of the year. I used to sit at a computer all day, but now I can only grab sneak peeks throughout the day. -
Whoa! For those of you who don't know this story, Jim Dye was not responding to B-3er. Both were addressing the same person, username MusicBoy.

We've added something like 400 members since these two posts were made, but I'm sure that some of you will recognize them: ... and the follow-up from Jim Dye:

Cigars for the ladies! That's the guy. Mystery solved; thanks!

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Joe G replied to Guy Berger's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I would recommend that you do see it. I thought he played that role perfectly. -
I think I change my strings about once every two toenail clippings.

What did you think of The Truman Show, Alex? I thought that was a good performance from Carrey. -
I came back from G.R. around 11 pm I think, so it was around that time. He wasn't getting drunk, just smoking like a chimney. I couldn't tell when this was filmed, as I didn't catch any references that would have dated it for certain. He was definitely an echo of the 60's, but whether he had experienced it himself is hard to say. He didn't look older than mid 30's, so it would have had to have taken place in the late 70's or early 80's if he was old enough to remember the 60's. But I got the feeling it was more recent than that... the closing credits had archival footage of the Black Panthers.

I think I played a few semi-hollow bodies a couple of years ago. The ones I checked out certainly looked nice, but didn't feel right in my hands. Just wasn't very impressed. I put 'em back on the rack. The Hofner's neck is a bit thicker than either of my other guitars, and that's taken some getting used to, for sure. We're still working on our relationship at this point. Re: amps, my live setup is either a Carvin rackmount tube amp going into a 2X12 cab, with a Boss GT-6 for a preamp, or a Peavey Delta Blues combo. Jim's watching ebay for me; I want to pick up a Pearce amp. Those things are sweet!

Not ringing any bells? The guy was a trip. A very fast talker, like he had more energy than his body and mouth could handle. Like I said, I could only take him in small doses, but it was certainly different.

What the status of live jazz where you live?
Joe G replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
There was a great jazz series in Okemos, a suburb of Lansing, this year. Last month I saw Cyrus Chestnut, and just last weekend, Donald Walden. It's close enough to me that I could ride my bike, except for the cold weather. And there's a wine and cheese reception afterwards, too. Elsewhere in Lansing, the Creole Gallery, an intimate venue that we hope to get into soon, has been booking quality national acts. We even had Wynton play there!!!! But they aren't exclusively bringing in jazz. Rodney Whitaker has been working hard to get jazz into the Wharton Center, the big concert venue in town. A welcome change from all the broadway shows... -
Did anybody else see this? Light-skinned black guy sitting in a chair with a mic, under a spotlight. I was going to call him a "comedian", but it was more social commentary, in the vein of Gil Scott Heron, I guess. Very stream-of-consciousness, ranging from funny to wistful to devastating. I could only take him in small doses, but I kept coming back. Anyone know who this is?

I really dug it. Did yours come with foam inserts for the "F" holes to cut down on feedback? The ones I saw were mounted on wood strips that matched the top. Yes. That's a very nice feature, too.

Heritage Eagles are nice. Is that what you have Mark? Or some other model? I've never played a Guild that I felt comfortable with. That could simply be poor setup at the store, though. Last April I bought a Hofner Jazzica Custom. It gets a gorgeous tone through a nice amp. I used it for some studio recording we did last fall, and I couldn't get over how rich it sounded. I've been less successful adapting it to live situations, however. Hard to play funk rhythm with just the neck pickup, and I often miss the sustain that I get with my Ibanez Artist semi-hollow body. Plus, I get nervous letting a $2000 intstrument out of my sight for any length of time. I guess it might end up primarily being my home and recording guitar. It shore is purty:

I hope we can make it out that way sometime. With baby Alfredson on the way soon, we are sticking close to home for the time being. But who knows what the future will bring? -

It is fun. If you ever make it to Michigan, Paul, we'll have to jam for sure! -

Glad to hear of this (mostly) positive change. Good luck, Paul. I don't think there's any way to have a totally perfect situation in life. You can always find something to complain about!
