What's the Deal with Elton and Rod?
Man with the Golden Arm replied to Alexander's topic in Miscellaneous Music
... my next thought was "count the head lice on the highway" -
heh. know not of what this is but truly something new to me. just looked at your flexi site yesterday as a matter of fact. interesting items ... certainly well beyond what was in our magazines back in the 60's ... sure wish I'd kept some of them ... and for the life of me I can't remember even what was on them ... some even punched out from the back of a cereal box. but the funy thing is is that I'm working on a sketch to support an infant toy rendering and the baby girl holding said item is in almsot an identical pose as Miss Persil.

Blindfold Test Master Signup Thread
Man with the Golden Arm replied to Dan Gould's topic in Blindfold Test
seeing that Durium's test is already swinging it might be sooner than April for MG and sandbags are on the way. I'm just doing a single disc, the gaul!, and that will probably be underway before the month of February is done. -

What's the Deal with Elton and Rod?
Man with the Golden Arm replied to Alexander's topic in Miscellaneous Music
hate to admit it but went to an Elton John concert on my first real date. the opening funeral for a friend ... was friggin cosmic for me at the time. had good seats and recall Elton polished off a good amount of a fifth of JW black. Second time I saw him Kiki Dee was there for that duet. -
Circumscription? Vox Populi? Dispositive? I'm gonna go back to drinking my Old Milwaukee, while Googling these words. i did: Circumscription: membership to "Moyl Monthly" magazine. Vox Populi: when father tells an untruth. Dispositive: colloquial put-down without being negative.

Thanks Ray for putting up some fine music here. The download is the way to go. (I'm certainly out of my element here and after some listening really have no guesses whatsoever. I recognize a couple tunes here and there but stumped and showing how little knwlwedge I have and hence why I have not partaken for a while.) more eager to see the commentaries and I'm really just here to watch. so... #16 ... reminds me of some Robert Altman cue but no roadhouse door prize for me. Xene Cervenka?? #15 ... damn nice fun with that bari blasting front line. #14 ... another cooker with some serious solo action ... not sure how well the band is keeping up without being messy but #13 ... nice bit of exotica, does the cat have some Gato woven into that latin silk? #12 ... pesky french thing. #11 ... ? maybe a bit of Manne intro? #10 ... guitarist's date and I'm inclined to go french if not Kenny. #9 ... ? #8 ... ghost riders go marching in hurrah ... love that boomy atmosphere from the left hand in the middle ... i like this player a lot but no clue. #7 ... thinking British here with that bari and vibe going on ... Feldman or LeSage?? #6 ... probably my least favorite toon of the bunch but quite the adventure on saxomophones. #5 ... maybe Rudd playing straight. tip of my tongue the tune ... "nearness of you"? #4 ... love the segue of 4 into 5 here .. great #3 ... ? a bit of caribe in that latin vibe vamp but I never do well with that trumpet tone. #2 ... solemn Jamal? #1 ... "midnite" a bit too hi for Shepp, no? Newman? hope to get listening to more of "B" soon.

NOT THAT IT MATTERS
Man with the Golden Arm replied to a topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
I was listening to a 'Hefti in Gotham' "share" a while back and noted how the tune "Mother Gotham" was right outta the Odd Couple. Forgot to check his discography. So, who was the go-to organist Hefti used? -
re; ron trent - i see that some Trent is e-musicable http://www.emusic.com/album/10924/10924581.html this looks to be a "mix tape" but contains much of the list from your rec. hmmm ... sample time. ... some very juju from what i hear.

Pan's Labyrinth
Man with the Golden Arm replied to Man with the Golden Arm's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
thanks Ray. i will save it for myself. requests have been coming for some time to go see some "like, really scary stuff". i have yet to cave and this coming from a house with only four channels on the antenna. "Labyrinth" just had that look of Roald Dahl doing Narnia with a bit of that Lynchian twist that i prefer. i've not seen a good scare for a long time and that genre is now so gourged with torture that little good old fairy-tail darkness exists anymore. i'll have to go rent "Dark Crystal" instead but it just won't mean much on our little tv set. -
Pan's Labyrinth

I'm thinking more Peter Greenaway meets The Dark Crystal and they have Gelflings for supper. wonder how much torture and blood letting etc there is? but these days compared to promos for all the CSI bits you see while watching a football game opinions vary as to what's a bit too much. -
from another movie thread ... ... just how heavy is this "R" rating on 'Labyrinth' - would a "tween" be OK with it? i'm eager to see it and my daughter has been buggin' for a scary movie. i see that Wm Stout had done some concept work ... monster talent!

been revisiting that Masters at Work nuyorican and perusing around courtesy of Jim's rec of the 'Quintero ala natch-urel' release and do like some of them earthy bound rhythms that root this genre... BUT is there any of the MAW esque stuff and the like that does NOT remind me of this everytime I hear it? (and hey there's even a ballad) (maybe i can toss in the Norah Jones Disclaimer that I'm looking for it for the wife?)
